The US Emergency Alert System, which interrupts live TV and radio broadcasts with information about national emergencies in progress, is vulnerable to attacks that allow hackers to remotely disseminate bogus reports and tamper with gear, security researchers warned. The remote takeover vulnerability, which was fixed in an update issued in April, affected the DASDEC-I and DASDEC-II application servers made by a company called Digital Alert Systems . It stems from a recent firmware update that mistakenly included the private secure shell (SSH) key, according to an advisory published Monday by researchers from security firm IOActive. Administrators use such keys to remotely log in to a server to gain unfettered "root" access. The publication of the key makes it trivial for hackers to gain unauthorized access on Digital Alert System appliances that run default settings on older firmware. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin slammed members of the far-left party France Insoumise, who he accused of defending a radical Islamist imam set for deportation from France. "Windows devices that support the newest Vector Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) (VAES) instruction set might be susceptible to data (opens in new tab) damage," the company said in its warning. It was explained that the devices affected by this problem use either AES-XTS, or AES-GCM block cipher modes. Microsoft did not say how the flaw manifests itself and how would users know if they were affected. It did say that it fixed the issue with software patches that it released on May 24 and June 14. But according to leaked notices sent to Amazon retailers, we might see another happen in “Q4" later this year.
