Vulnerable Democrats running for reelection or higher office in the midterms are bracing for Republican attacks on rising inflation during the August recess when members are doing district work. Iowa’s lone Democrat congressional member Rep. Cindy Axne (D-IA), has already seen questions on inflation asked by constituents. Last month, as the Real Clear Politics reported , she was asked by a constituent if she was “concerned about the rising gas prices and the rise in the cost of consumer goods here in Iowa and in America?” In a serious-looking manner, she blamed the inflation on the Chinese coronavirus since the experts are “comparing costs against last year” and says it’s “because we were in the middle of [Chinese coronavirus]. Axne even called inflation “false advertisement.” Real Clear Politics pointed out that during an interview with a local Iowa TV station, Axne said, “We’re not even remotely close to a point to say that we’re at rising inflation.” In the interview, she … [Read more...] about Vulnerable Democrats Brace for Inflation Attacks During August Recess

Sometimes truth may be stranger than fiction, but for best-selling author Tom Clancy, the two are often more closely paralleled. Clancy died Tuesday (Oct. 1) at the age of 66, but his thrilling, espionage and military-inspired novels helped him become one of the most well-known American authors. From a dramatic Soviet-era defection to a high-profile assassination plot, here are four true stories from Clancy's novels. The Hunt for Red October Clancy's first novel, "The Hunt for Red October," was published in 1984. The book introduced Clancy's most famous fictional character, Jack Ryan, who would become a central figure in the majority of the author's novels. In the action-packed novel, CIA analyst Ryan helps a Soviet submarine captain and his crew defect to the United States. The action takes place aboard an experimental nuclear submarine , called Red October. The novel was reportedly inspired by a real-life mutiny aboard a Soviet Navy anti-submarine … [Read more...] about Spies & Secrets: 4 True Stories From Tom Clancy’s Novels
During a Monday appearance on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota and former adviser to President Joe Biden’s transition team Dr. Michael Osterholm addressed the “confusion” surrounding how different states and local governments are handling the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Osterholm argued against the use of cloth face coverings as means of mitigating the spread of COVID-19. He emphasized the effectiveness of N-95 respirators, which he said “would do a lot” for both the vaccinated and unvaccinated in preventing the spread. “First of all, we’re in a very unfortunate situation. We’ve really brought this country to a point of confusion, which really misses the main point that we should be focusing on vaccine, vaccine and vaccine,” Osterholm lamented. “You know, I wish we could get rid of the term ‘masking’ because, in fact, it implies anything you put in front of your face works. And if I could … [Read more...] about Osterholm: Cloth Masks ‘Not Very Effective’ — N95s ‘Could Do a Lot’ in Mitigating Spread of Coronavirus
Twitter has announced its first algorithmic bias bounty challenge , offering cash prices ranging from $500 to $3,500 for those who can help the social media giant identify a range of issues. After significant backlash last year, the company admitted in May that its automatic cropping algorithm repeatedly cropped out Black faces in favor of White ones . It also favored men over women, according to research from Twitter. Multiple Twitter users proved this fact using pictures of themselves or of famous figures, like former President Barack Obama . Rumman Chowdhury, director of Twitter META, explained that the company decided to change the algorithm and admitted that companies like Twitter often "find out about unintended ethical harms once they've already reached the public." On Friday, Chowdhury and Twitter META product manager Jutta Williams unveiled the algorithmic bias bounty competition, which they said was part of this year's DEF CON AI Village. "In May, we … [Read more...] about Twitter announces first algorithmic bias bounty challenge
Fascism is a complex ideology. There are many definitions of fascism; some people describe it as a set of political actions, a political philosophy or a mass movement. Most definitions agree that fascism is authoritarian and promotes nationalism at all costs, but its basic characteristics are a matter of debate. Fascism is commonly associated with the Italian and German regimes that came to power after World War I, though other countries have also been ruled by fascist regimes. Adolf Hitler in Germany, Benito Mussolini in Italy, Francisco Franco in Spain and Juan Perón in Argentina were the most well-known fascist leaders of the 20th century. Certain aspects of fascist rhetoric and political organization have shifted in the decades that followed World War II. And fascism has further evolved in the political landscape of the 21st century. However, core fascist ideologies and goals espoused by the likes of Hitler and Mussolini are still present in populist organizations today, and … [Read more...] about What is fascism?
The fact that groups of people typically choose to expel selfish individuals is no surprise. But new research suggests such troops often want to kick out generous members as well. This counterintuitive behavior could be rooted in how such giving people make others feel bad, or simply in how they stand out from the crowd, researchers suggest. Kicking out do-gooders Initially, psychologists were investigating if groups would tolerate individuals who contributed little toward group endeavors but also mooched little of the subsequent payoffs. The researchers told 104 college students they were each in groups of five, in which each member interacted via computer. In reality the other four members were played by the computer -- three of the programmed members made consistently moderate choices, while the fourth typically made more extreme decisions. Each group member was given 10 points. The students were told they could invest as many of the points as they wanted … [Read more...] about Moochers and Do-Gooders Both Shunned, Study Finds
This week, Samsung was the first retailer of the year to launch a new collection of handsets and now, Samsung Galaxy S21 deals and the larger Plus and Ultra are now available to pre-order. However, like many other pre-order periods, Samsung's latest devices are holding some pretty high prices, especially when you look into getting these handsets on a contract. All three options are actually cheaper than last year's Samsung S20 deals , making SIM-free a great option to make the most of these lowered prices. Go for the S21 - the cheapest of the three - and you'll end up paying £769 . The larger S21 Plus comes in at £999 and Samsung S21 Ultra deals come in at £1149 . While those are all expensive starting prices, it will be far cheaper than a two year contract. Once you buy the handset, you can simply invest in cheap SIM only … [Read more...] about Is it cheaper to go SIM-free or for a contract with Samsung Galaxy S21 deals?

Smartphones don't just connect to nearby cell phone towers. Proximity beacon technology has been around a few years in the form of Apple's iBeacon , which allows an iPhone or iPad to connect to objects – called beacons – using Bluetooth. Retailers , museums, sports stadiums and anywhere else with large numbers of smartphone users can now use beacons to provide hyper-local information down to the exact aisle, exhibit, or seat. Airports, zoos, concert halls and shopping malls are now being fitted with Bluetooth-powered beacons that let smartphones pick up adverts, notifications, and even navigate indoors. However, since its launch in 2013, the iBeacon infrastructure has been built up with only iOS users in mind. Step forward Google's Eddystone. What are proximity beacons? A beacon is a miniaturised Bluetooth radio that can be placed almost anywhere. Google wants us to think of beacons as lighthouses (for some reason Eddystone is named after a lighthouse in Cornwall, … [Read more...] about Apple vs Google: The battle of the beacons
Last Thursday the large new Russian space station module, Nauka, finally docked with the International Space Station after several technical issues en route to the orbiting laboratory. However, the problems did not end there. About three hours after linking to the station, Nauka began firing its propulsion thrusters, throwing the space station off kilter . This led NASA Mission Control in Houston to initiate "loss of attitude control" procedures on board the station, a contingency astronauts and flight controllers train for. Then, in concert with flight controllers in Moscow, the teams commanded the station to fire its thrusters on the Russian segment of the space station, as well as a Progress supply vehicle attached to the laboratory. These combined actions prevented the station from tumbling too violently until Nauka exhausted its primary fuel supply. Further Reading Russian module suddenly fires thrusters after docking with space station Following this near miss, … [Read more...] about Nauka module’s near miss raises concerns about future of space station
