Google's going... out of business?! That's apparently the case in Russia. As Reuters reports, Google's Russia subsidiary plans to file for bankruptcy after "the authorities seized its bank account, making it impossible to carry on operations." Reuters has a statement from Google: The Russian authorities' seizure of Google Russia's bank account has made it untenable for our Russia office to function, including employing and paying Russia-based employees, paying suppliers and vendors, and meeting other financial obligations. Google Russia has published a notice of its intention to file for bankruptcy. A regulatory filing showed Google Russia has been expecting to file for bankruptcy since March 22. The division did $2 billion in revenue last year, but that doesn't matter much when authorities take your entire bank account. Unlike many tech companies that have abandoned Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, Google has tried to keep doing business in the country. Heavy hitters … [Read more...] about Google Russia forced to declare bankruptcy after bank account seizure

musk: Elon Musk wants US SEC to check if Parag Agrawal’s claim on Twitter users is true
Opening another front against Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal , Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday asked the US Securities and Exchange Commission ( SEC ) to probe whether Twitter's claim on the number of its user base is true. Replying to a follower who said that if it turns out that Twitter lied in the official filing, serious consequences and complete distrust of investors can await it, Musk replied: "Hello @SECGov, anyone home?" While Twitter said in its SEC filing that less than 5 per cent of its monetisable daily active users (mDAUs) are fake, Musk believes the number of bots is four times higher. To prove his point, Musk has now started a poll among his over 93 million followers. "Twitter claims that >95% of daily active users are real, unique humans. Does anyone have that experience?" he posted. A user replied: "I have to think @elonmusk knew this was the case before he moved on Twitter. If Twitter lied about how many actual users they … [Read more...] about musk: Elon Musk wants US SEC to check if Parag Agrawal’s claim on Twitter users is true
musk: Amid Musk-Agrawal tussle, Twitter board wants $44 billion deal to go through
Despite the ongoing tussle between Elon Musk and Parag Agrawal , the Twitter board is keen to see the $44 billion takeover deal go through as it is in the "best interest of all shareholders", the media reported on Wednesday. "We intend to close the transaction and enforce the merger agreement," the board said Tuesday in a statement to Bloomberg. Goldman Sachs Group Inc and JPMorgan Chase & Co may earn a combined $133 million in fees for advising Twitter on the acquisition, but only if the deal goes through. The Tesla CEO on Tuesday said that the $44 billion deal at $54.20 a share "cannot move forward" until the Twitter CEO Agrawal proves the actual bot numbers. While Twitter maintains it has less than 5 per cent fake/spammy accounts on its platform, Musk believes the number can be as high at 50 per cent, and wants Agrawal to come clean on this. In a tech conference in Miami on Monday, a frustrated Musk even said that a viable deal at a … [Read more...] about musk: Amid Musk-Agrawal tussle, Twitter board wants $44 billion deal to go through

How to List Users in Linux
Linux is a multiuser operating system, so creating numerous user accounts is easy. Over time, it’s easy to lose track of which accounts are required. Listing user accounts helps you manage them. User Accounts Advances in technology often bring their own new problems. As soon as computers were able to support multiple users, the need to ring-fence and encapsulate each person’s work from everyone else became apparent. This led to the concept of user accounts . Each user has a named ID and a password. These are the credentials that let them log into their account. Their files are kept in an area that is private to each user. On a busy system, it is easy to lose sight of which accounts you have created, and which are no longer needed. From a security point of view, it is bad practice to keep user accounts that you no longer need to be configured and accessible on your computer. You should remove those users . Even if you don’t have other people using your computer you might … [Read more...] about How to List Users in Linux
India’s H-1B Companies Ask Labor Dept. to Let Foreign Workers Stay amid Crash
The India-based NASSCOM business lobby is asking the Department of Labor to help the lobby keep its huge workforce of Indian H-1B temporary workers in American jobs throughout the coronavirus crash, according to a report in the Times of India newspaper. “Everyone that has been involved in the H1-B program … has skirted the rules to stay in the United States,” said one lobbyist. “These companies do not want to have to fire these [H-1B] workers and send them back home — they want to hold them here” so they can grab jobs in the recovery, he said. Labor Department officials declined to provide any information about the NASSCOM lobbying and declined to say if the agency would help businesses change the paperwork that allows fired H-1Bs to stay in the United States. The Indian report did not say if the NASSCOM lobbyists met with Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia. If the administration moves forward in relaxing regulations governing the H-1B program amid spiking unemployment, “get … [Read more...] about India’s H-1B Companies Ask Labor Dept. to Let Foreign Workers Stay amid Crash
Microsoft previews a new, totally redesigned Outlook for Windows app
For years now, Microsoft has been planning behind the scenes to unify its disparate Outlook clients across the web, Windows, and macOS. Today, that goal moved one step closer to completion with the introduction of a new Outlook client for Windows users that closely mirrors the interface and functionality of the Outlook web client. The new app is available to Office Insiders in the Beta channel who have work or school Microsoft 365 accounts. Regular Microsoft accounts aren't currently supported. This appears to be the same version of the Outlook client that leaked to the public a couple of weeks ago . A unified Outlook client, also known as "One Outlook" or "Project Monarch," will be an especially welcome change for Mac users. The Mac version of Outlook has always looked different from and been less fully featured than the Windows client, though the current situation is much better than the bad old days of Microsoft Entourage . Why tech giants’ cash is a hidden source of greenhouse gas emissions
Even tech companies that have promised to slash their greenhouse gas emissions have a big climate-related blind spot, according to a new report published by three environmental groups. With their cash and investments, Google, Apple, Meta, and other tech giants are indirectly financing fossil fuel companies. While these companies might have taken steps to cut down on pollution within their own operations and supply chains, the financial institutions they bank with still funnel Big Tech’s profits into heavily polluting industries. Emissions associated with that financial activity are so significant that they actually far exceed emissions from each company’s operations, the report finds. That pollution has flown under the radar because it isn’t typically included in companies’ assessments of their emissions. But if emissions associated with the cash holdings for Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce were taken into account, it would increase their carbon footprints by … [Read more...] about Why tech giants’ cash is a hidden source of greenhouse gas emissions
Teachers Union Leader Resists Schools Reopening from Island Vacation
A leader of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) wants kids to remain out of the classroom because schools are “unsafe,” but she made the claims in the midst of a sunny vacation in Puerto Rico. Sarah Chambers, who WGN said is on the union’s executive board and an area vice president and claimed she “led four strikes,” is opposed to schools returning to in-person learning on Monday. Chambers made several posts on Twitter this week attacking the plan. “Just a few hours earlier, Chambers posted a picture on Instagram that appears to show her pool side in Puerto Rico and talking about going to Old San Juan for seafood,” WGN reported. In a post on Instagram — on an account that has now been made private — Chambers wrote, “Spending the last day of 2020 by the poolside. We have the whole pool to ourselves. Then, we are going to old San Juan to get some yummy seafood mofongo.” On Twitter, Chambers identified herself as a “socialist.” “We have an entire private Airbnb house to … [Read more...] about Teachers Union Leader Resists Schools Reopening from Island Vacation
