TikTok is reportedly working on a way for users to reset their ‘For You’ page, a key element in the app’s user experience. According to a report in The Verge, quoting company spokesperson Jamie Favazza, the short video platform is testing the new ‘Refresh’ button that will reset users’ For You feed. The For You feed is TikTok’s main section which shows users new content. Over time, this feed starts showing custom recommendations based on the user’s previous activity. However, there may be instances where the algorithm doesn’t show enough relevant content. In that case, the Refresh option can be used to undo the existing custom feed and let you start from scratch. online surveillance: India’s push for digital sovereignty may risks more online surveillance, here’s how
Shortly after the Nigerian government blocked Twitter in 2021 for removing a post by the country's president, its verified handle @NigeriaGov appeared on Koo , an Indian microblogging platform that was little known overseas. It was a major milestone for Koo, which had launched with a focus on Indian languages and a government-friendly stance even as its bigger rival Twitter increasingly locked horns with authorities over its content moderation policies. It was also a vindication for the Indian government, where many officials are on Koo, and which last month hailed another locally made technology: a mobile operating system, BharOS , to challenge Google whose Android operating system dominates the country's smartphone market. "We have a long way to go, but if this happens, monopoly by anybody will go away," Dharmendra Pradhan, India's skill development and entrepreneurship minister, said of the potential for locally made technologies like BharOS to be … [Read more...] about online surveillance: India’s push for digital sovereignty may risks more online surveillance, here’s how
Until further notice, think twice before using Google to download software
Searching Google for downloads of popular software has always come with risks, but over the past few months, it has been downright dangerous, according to researchers and a pseudorandom collection of queries. “Threat researchers are used to seeing a moderate flow of malvertising via Google Ads,” volunteers at Spamhaus wrote on Thursday . “However, over the past few days, researchers have witnessed a massive spike affecting numerous famous brands, with multiple malware being utilized. This is not ‘the norm.’” One of many new threats: MalVirt The surge is coming from numerous malware families, including AuroraStealer, IcedID , Meta Stealer, RedLine Stealer, Vidar, Formbook, and XLoader. In the past, these families typically relied on phishing and malicious spam that attached Microsoft Word documents with booby-trapped macros. Over the past month, Google Ads has become the go-to place for criminals to spread their malicious wares that are disguised as legitimate downloads by … [Read more...] about Until further notice, think twice before using Google to download software
No NATO for Sweden Until Qur’an Burning is Banned: Ankara
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that unless Sweden bans the burning of the Islamic Qur’an, he will not agree to the country’s bid for membership in the NATO military alliance. President Erdogan stated this week that Turkey will refuse to give a green light for Swedish membership in NATO as long as it remains legal for people to burn copies of the Islamic holy book following a recent burning of the Qur’an last month. “As long as you allow my holy book, the Qur’an, to be burned and torn apart, we will not say yes to your entry into NATO. Our view of Finland is positive, but not of Sweden,” Erdogan said, broadcaster SVT reports . Finnish police blocked a Qur’an burning just this week. Swedish Agency Warns of Increased Terrorism Threat
The Swedish Agency for Psychological Defense has warned that Sweden is in the crosshairs of foreign actors who are spreading messages that the country is a legitimate target for terror attacks. Mikael Tofvesson, head of the operations department at the Swedish Agency for Psychological Defense, stated earlier this week that attitudes toward Sweden abroad were becoming more and more aggressive. According to Tofvesson, part of the rise in aggression comes from a social media campaign by Muslims that claimed Swedish social services were kidnapping the children of Muslim families in Sweden, a phenomenon that has been ongoing since late 2021, broadcaster SVT reports . Canada Says It Is Monitoring ‘Potential Second Incident’ Linked to Chinese Alleged Spy Balloon
The Canadian Armed Forces revealed late Thursday that it is monitoring a “potential second incident” related to the discovery of a massive Chinese balloon over Montana that the Communist Party claimed had drifted off course and coincidentally landed near American military sites of high importance. The Pentagon confirmed late Thursday that it had identified what it suspected was a Chinese surveillance balloon over Montana, near an area housing nuclear missile silo fields. A Pentagon spokesman insisted the balloon was “currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground.” Pentagon officials reportedly opted not to shoot the balloon down, despite the overt national security threat it causes, out of concern that debris from the destroyed balloon could hurt people on the ground. The Communist Party of China confirmed on Friday that the balloon originated in China, but claimed it … [Read more...] about Canada Says It Is Monitoring ‘Potential Second Incident’ Linked to Chinese Alleged Spy Balloon
Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction
At various times in its past, the Earth has succeeded in killing off most of its inhabitants. Although the impact that killed the non-avian dinosaurs and many other species gets most of the attention, the majority of the mass extinctions we're aware of were driven by geological processes and the changes in climate that they triggered. Unfortunately, based on the current rate at which animals are vanishing for good, we're currently in the midst of another mass extinction, this one driven by a single species: humans. (And many of the extinctions occurred before we started getting serious about messing with the climate.) This week's edition of Science contains a series of articles tracking the pace of the extinction and examining our initial efforts to contain it. Extinction and “defaunation” Estimating the total number of animal species is a challenging task, but numbers range from roughly five to 10 million. Of those, we seem to be exterminating about 10,000 to 60,000 every … [Read more...] about Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction
Tech firms would pay $89B in taxes if offshore gov’t debt came home
According to a new report , four major American tech firms hold $163 billion in United States government debt overseas for tax reasons. That means that American taxpayers are effectively paying interest toward a corporate cash stash held abroad that likely will not return to the US anytime soon. Further Reading Silicon Valley fights to keep its Dutch Sandwich and Double Irish loopholes If Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Cisco were to repatriate this money to the US, and if it were taxed at the current corporate rate of 35 percent, “it would produce a $89 billion windfall for the US Treasury—equivalent to 17 percent of America’s projected $514 billion budget deficit this year,” according to the report, published Wednesday by the UK's Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ). “The amount invested by Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Cisco is so large they would collectively be the 14th biggest overseas purchaser of Treasury securities, above Singapore and Norway.” That … [Read more...] about Tech firms would pay $89B in taxes if offshore gov’t debt came home
SEC Considers Softening Climate Change Disclosure Rules
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is considering relaxing a proposal that would require companies to disclose the alleged effects of extreme weather and climate change. The Wall Street Journal first reported that the Wall Street regulator is revisiting the financial report part of its climate disclosure proposal. The SEC will likely make the disclosures less onerous than originally proposed, which may include increasing the threshold for which companies have to report climate costs. “In addition to the financial-reporting rules, SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s climate proposals would require publicly traded companies to disclose the greenhouse-gas emissions from their operations, energy consumption and — in some cases — suppliers and customers,” the Journal noted. SEC weighs raising the proposed threshold at which companies would have to disclose weather or climate-related hits. Current language would capture anything that exceeds 1% of any line item in financial … [Read more...] about SEC Considers Softening Climate Change Disclosure Rules
