Updated 3 times AlertMe LONDON — Britain can handle the security risks involved with using mobile networks made by China’s Huawei, the cybersecurity chief said Wednesday, adding to a growing debate among countries on whether the company should be banned, as the U.S. wants. Ciaran Martin, the CEO of the U.K. National Cyber Security Centre, said it was important to have “sustainable diversity” in the supply of telecommunications equipment. He added that his agency could handle the challenges involved in monitoring suppliers who many not be considered trustworthy — a hint at Huawei. United States President Donald Trump is considering an executive order to declare a national emergency that would bar US companies from using telecommunications equipment made by China's Huawei and ZTE, three sources familiar with the situation told Reuters. It would be the latest step by the Trump administration to cut Huawei and ZTE, two of China's biggest network equipment companies, out of the US market. The United States alleges that the two companies work at the behest of the Chinese government and that their equipment could be used to spy on Americans. The executive order, which has been under consideration for more than eight months, could be issued as early as January and would direct the Commerce Department to block US companies from buying equipment from foreign telecommunications makers that pose significant national security risks, sources from the telecoms industry and the administration said. While the order is unlikely to name Huawei or ZTE, a source said it is expected … [Read more...] about White House mulls using emergency powers to ban Huawei and ZTE
If 5G equipment bans from the United States, Australia, and New Zealand weren’t enough this year, Huawei will end 2018 on an even worse note: Kyodo News reports that Japan’s government has decided to block the Chinese company and its smaller rival ZTE from network hardware procurement. Not coincidentally, Canadian authorities are publicly discussing a similar ban following last week’s arrest of Huawei’s CFO. Japan’s decision comes less than a month after the United States reportedly lobbied several overseas allies to block Chinese cellular hardware from their wireless networks, in part due to concerns over monitoring of U.S. military base communications. According to reports, the U.S. floated the prospect of financial subsidies for compliant countries, alongside the threat of reduced assistance to non-compliant ones. Kyodo reports that the Japanese government complied, and is coordinating with top cellular providers to remove Huawei and … [Read more...] about Japan bans Huawei and ZTE 5G networking hardware; will Canada be next?
The Japanese government is looking to ban Huawei and ZTE from participating in the country's 5G race, Reuters reports, citing insiders familiar with the plan. The move is said to be part of Tokyo's wider effort aimed at bolstering its infrastructure and make it more resilient to cyber attacks, as per the same source. While the measure has yet to be officially confirmed, its publication could happen early next week. Geng Shuang, an official of China's Foreign Ministry, said Beijing is deeply concerned about the reports and called for Japan to ensure "a fair competition environment" for Chinese firms operating in its wireless segment, concluding that "mutual trust" is at stake. The new report emerged a mere day after Huawei CFO was arrested in Canada on a U.S. request over suspected involvement in a conspiracy to violate stateside trade sanctions against Iran, according to recent reports. REUTERS/Chris Wattie TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan is set to effectively ban government purchases of telecommunications products from China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp over fears of intelligence leaks and cyber attacks, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Friday. The government is expected to revise its internal rules on procurement as early as Monday. It is unlikely to name the two companies, to avoid aggravating China, but Huawei and ZTE are to be subject to the ban, the report said, citing a government source. The report follows a decision by the United States this year to ban government purchases of Huawei gear. U.S. intelligence agencies allege Huawei is linked to China’s government and that its equipment could contain “backdoors” for use by spies, although no evidence has been produced publicly and the firm has denied the claims.
