How progressives got steamrolled in New Jersey

April 15, 2018 robert Leave a Comment

Elections The party establishment flexes its muscles in a bid to flip a Republican House seat. Jeff Van Drew has voted against raising the minimum wage and gay marriage. He often sides with industry on environmental issues and carries an A rating from the NRA. And he’s the odds-on favorite to be New Jersey’s newest Democratic congressman. In the party’s first real crack at winning the South Jersey-based district held by retiring Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-N.J.) for more than two decades, Democratic party establishment — at every level — is throwing its collective weight behind Van Drew, leaving local progressives baffled, frustrated and more than a little angry. Story Continued Below The race is a showcase of whether the Democratic Party nationally will tolerate politicians like Van Drew in the name of winning back the majority in the U.S. House for the first time since 2011. It highlights Democrats’ struggles to blend their stated ideals on issues … [Read more...] about How progressives got steamrolled in New Jersey

The search has been called off for a man who jumped overboard as the cruise ship he was on was traveled to Cape Liberty, New Jersey. The 24-year-old guest, a man from the United States, was seen "intentionally going overboard" the Anthem of the Seas cruise ship little after 4 p.m. Friday off the coast of Virginia, Royal Caribbean Cruises manager Owen Torres said. "The ship immediately began a search for the guest and notified the U.S. Coast Guard," he said. "After several hours of searching, the Coast Guard released Anthem to resume its scheduled itinerary while USCG search operations continue," Torres said. The Coast Guard searched overnight for the young man by helicopter and sea, but by 11 a.m. Saturday the search was called off, NJ.com reports. Mercedes Hits 2 Cars, Plows into 4 Pedestrians: NYPD "There's not a possibility that he is alive," a Coast Guard spokesman said. How eating meat creates a ‘dead zone’ the size of New Jersey in the Gulf of Mexico every year

caption A wholesaler inspects beef carcasses that hang inside a refrigerated room at the Cibevial slaughterhouse in Corbas, France, May 4, 2016. source REUTERS/Robert Pratta Eating meat contributes to an ongoing ecological disaster in the Gulf Mexico, where sea life gets suffocated in a ‘”dead zone” the size of New Jersey. Nutrient pollution from intensive agriculture washes into the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River, causing phytoplankton blooms. As the phytoplankton decomposes, huge portions of the Gulf get starved of oxygen. Beyond killing sea life, the Gulf of Mexico dead zone has disastrous ramifications for the area’s economic engine – its fisheries. Of all the ways to help combat climate change and environmental degradation, cutting meat out of your diet – or at least reducing how much you eat – is probably one of the easiest, and most effective. … [Read more...] about How eating meat creates a ‘dead zone’ the size of New Jersey in the Gulf of Mexico every year
