Even if the iPhone 14 is the most powerful phone ever, that’s not enough

May 20, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… I must confess, I didn't quite 'get' the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 as soon as I heard about it. It's a new, super-powerful chipset from Qualcomm that'll come to Android phones toward the end of 2022, and a small step up over the 8 Gen 1 already seen in the OnePlus 10 Pro , Xiaomi 12 , and members of the Samsung Galaxy S22 family that launched in the US. The flagship features include 10% faster CPU performance, 10% faster GPU clock speeds and 20% better AI power efficiency - and if your eyes glazed over when you started reading that, we don't blame you. It's not exactly a sexy new smartphone component, and it's very much the definition of 'an incremental upgrade'. But that doesn't even matter - tech fans know that Apple's Bionic chips are always much faster than Qualcomm's Snapdragon rivals, and as a die-hard Android fan, even I'll admit that the iPhone 14 will probably have any of its Android contemporaries beat in terms of sheer power. But … [Read more...] about Even if the iPhone 14 is the most powerful phone ever, that’s not enough

Nasty Apple bug reportedly killing FaceTime on iPhones

May 20, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… A nasty bug has been going around affecting iPhone users that can cause the iMessage and FaceTime apps to randomly deactivate with no way to turn them back on. The news comes from various Twitter users including prominent Apple leaker and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, all of whom detailed their experience with this bug. So far, this problem is limited to users on the T-Mobile and Verizon networks. That may seem like good news at first if the problem is limited to just two networks. However, Verizon and T-Mobile have the widest service networks in the United States, and with over 113 million iPhone users in the U.S., this could be a major problem. Problem with eSIM The problem is specifically affecting the eSIM chip, according to 9 To 5 Mac . The eSIM chip allows people to set up and activate their phones on a network via software without having to use a physical SIM card or visit a carrier store. And if you don’t recall, … [Read more...] about Nasty Apple bug reportedly killing FaceTime on iPhones

May 24, 2022 by global.techradar.com Leave a Comment

“Tough to forge” digital driver’s license is… easy to forge

May 24, 2022 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

In late 2019, the government of New South Wales in Australia rolled out digital driver's licenses. The new licenses allowed people to use their iPhone or Android device to show proof of identity and age during roadside police checks or at bars, stores, hotels, and other venues. ServiceNSW, as the government body is usually referred to, promised it would “provide additional levels of security and protection against identity fraud, compared to the plastic [driver's license]” citizens had used for decades. Now, 30 months later, security researchers have shown that it’s trivial for just about anyone to forge fake identities using the digital driver's licenses, or DDLs. The technique allows people under drinking age to change their date of birth and for fraudsters to forge fake identities. The process takes well under an hour, doesn’t require any special hardware or expensive software, and will generate fake IDs that pass inspection using the electronic verification system used by … [Read more...] about “Tough to forge” digital driver’s license is… easy to forge

Can Apple read your iMessages? Ars deciphers “end-to-end” crypto claims

June 26, 2013 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Ever since the National Security Agency's secret surveillance program came to light three weeks ago, implicated companies have issued carefully worded statements denying that government snoops have direct or wholesale access to e-mail and other sensitive customer data. The most strenuous denial came 10 days ago, when Apple said it took pains to protect personal information stored on its servers , in many cases by not collecting it in the first place. "For example, conversations which take place over iMessage and FaceTime are protected by end-to-end encryption so no one but the sender and receiver can see or read them," company officials wrote . "Apple cannot decrypt that data. Similarly, we do not store data related to customers’ location, Map searches or Siri requests in any identifiable form." Some cryptographers and civil liberties advocates have chafed at the claim that even Apple is unable to bypass the end-to-end encryption protecting them. After all, Apple controls the … [Read more...] about Can Apple read your iMessages? Ars deciphers “end-to-end” crypto claims

Apple punishes Windows 11 users with new iTunes update, just in time for WWDC

May 20, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… Apple replaced iTunes with the Music app in macOS Catalina , but it's still available in Windows 10 and Windows 11 - and it’s just had a new update. Apple's music library app is likely how you first came across the company and the iPod - like when I bought the third-generation iPod in 2004. Managing music libraries and buying content on the iTunes Store was ahead of its time, but since most of us listen to music with streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify these days, iTunes has become a distant, and regrettable, memory. Except for Windows users, where Apple is holding off turning iTunes into a dedicated Music app , as it has done on macOS. The new update is just bug fixes, but it's not good enough anymore. Indeed, iTunes for Windows is looking more outdated with every passing year. It’s time for Apple to take another look at this strategy, especially as Apple Music is available on Android devices . … [Read more...] about Apple punishes Windows 11 users with new iTunes update, just in time for WWDC

A new Apple TV 4K app, which allows content professionals to view their video clips in up to 10-bit 4K HDR, will catch the eye. Especially after over 100 professional editors recently took Apple to task for its handling of video editing software Final Cut Pro. The new app is intended to harness the Apple TV 4K screen to reproduce high-quality professional screenings outside the studio environment. “Imagine being able to view a color-correction session from your couch or your office. ExpressVPN is a solid virtual private network and we’ve picked it as the best VPN overall. One of the reasons we like it is because it’s so easy for beginners to come to grips with. Still, in case you’re feeling some first-time jitters, we’ll show you how to get to grips with this excellent VPN service. Signing Up for ExpressVPN To get started with ExpressVPN, you first need to sign up for it. On the ExpressVPN website , click on the button in the center that says “get ExpressVPN” and you’ll come to a page where you can choose from the service’s three plans. As much as we like ExpressVPN, there’s no getting around the fact that it’s quite pricey, so your only real choice is the one-year plan as that takes the most of the sting out. Still, $100 is a lot of money for a VPN. Read our ExpressVPN vs. NordVPN comparison to see how it stacks up to another industry leader. Microsoft Copies the App Store’s Worst Feature for Windows

May 24, 2022 by www.howtogeek.com Leave a Comment

The app store on Windows, known as the Microsoft Store, received a much-needed overhaul just in time for Windows 11 . Soon, it will become even more like the app stores on iPhone and Android — to a fault. Microsoft announced many upcoming features and changes to Windows during today’s Build event, some related to the Microsoft Store. The store will soon be open to all Win32 applications, meaning more software can be distributed through the Store, and Android apps will be available in more countries . Microsoft also said, “based on feedback from the developer community, we’re soon piloting new developer tools to help reach the right customers at the right time. Using Microsoft Advertising, developers will be able to create, run and view ad campaigns in the Store, improving discoverability and conversion for apps.” In other words, get ready for advertisements on the Microsoft Store. Microsoft already promotes certain apps and other content on the Store in a similar format to … [Read more...] about Microsoft Copies the App Store’s Worst Feature for Windows

JLab Epic Air Elite Review

September 30, 2021 by www.pcmag.com Leave a Comment

When JLab's Epic Air earphones arrived last year, they felt like a big step forward for true wireless earbuds —they looked different than the competition and had better battery specs. At $149, the new Epic Air Elite earbuds cost the same, but boast even more battery life for their charging case than the original. The water-resistant in-ears also now have EQ modes you can switch between, as well as an ambient mode that allows you to hear your surroundings. While the original Epic Air earned our Editors' Choice, t his time around there are even more true wireless options to compete with, so the sequel falls a little shy of those honors. And while the Epic Air Elite earbuds deliver quality audio, there's room for improvement in next year's model. Design One key differentiator in the black-and-silver Epic Air Elite's design is the ear hook. Sure, we're used to seeing these on Bluetooth and wired fitness earphones, but true wireless in-ears rarely deviate from the standard, earplug … [Read more...] about JLab Epic Air Elite Review
