By Stephen Silver Thursday, July 12, 2018, 12:58 pm PT (03:58 pm ET) A new study by a security firm finds that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S are much more likely to fail than any other iPhone model —however, Samsung has a failure rate higher than that of any other manufacturer tracked by the firm. According to "State of Mobile Device Repair & Security," a new report released this month by security and data erasure firm Blancco, the iPhone 6 has a failure rate of 22 percent, with the iPhone 6S coming in second at 16 percent. Every other active iPhone model is in the single digits, with the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus listed at 3 percent each. While the iPhone 6 generation has had the highest failure rate among the last several Blancco quarterly reports, the firm noted that recent software updates have adversely affected the iPhone 6's battery lifespan. As AppleInsider explained in 2017, there were two separate issues affecting the iPhone 6. First, there were … [Read more...] about Study: iPhone 6 has highest failure rate among iPhones — but Samsung’s rate is higher

Apple awarded $539 million in Samsung patent trial, but iPhone 6 revelation may be more damaging
These days it seems like Apple is always fighting several cases in court, but it’s rare that we hear much about them. In two separate cases presided over by U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh this week, however, quite a bit of news was made. In one, Apple won a bundle of money from Samsung, but in another, it may have lost some face with its fans.In the ongoing patent battle with Samsung that reaches way back to when Steve Jobs was still alive, a jury has awarded Apple $538.6 million dollars in damages regarding the design of its phones. The jury took five days to decide the wide-ranging case that is as much about innovation as it is about rectangular pieces of glass. This is hardly the first cash award Apple has received in this case. Originally, the jury ordered Samsung to pay $1.049 billion to Apple, which was later revised down to around $400 million. After a retrial, the case reached the Supreme Court, which unanimously overturned the original decision based on a reading of … [Read more...] about Apple awarded $539 million in Samsung patent trial, but iPhone 6 revelation may be more damaging
Court docs show Apple knew about the bendiness of the iPhone 6, 6 Plus
Newly released court documents reveal just how much Apple apparently knew about the iPhone 6's and 6 Plus' propensity to bend. A report by Motherboard shows parts of the documents that were made public by US District Court judge Lucy Koh (most of the documents remain sealed) and they say Apple's internal testing found that iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models were indeed bendier than previous iPhones. "The iPhone 6 was 3.3 times more likely to bend than the iPhone 5s" and "the iPhone 6 Plus was 7.2 times more likely to bend than the iPhone 5s," the document states. Judge Koh wrote that "one of the major concerns Apple Identified prior to launching the iPhones was that they were 'likely to bend more easily when compared to previous generations.'" Flashback to Bendgate The bending issues with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus date back to shortly after the phones' release in September 2014. Many users reported their new smartphones bending easily from regular use, like sticking the phone in their back … [Read more...] about Court docs show Apple knew about the bendiness of the iPhone 6, 6 Plus
Editorial: The mysterious curse of iPhone 6, lifted with… the headphone jack
In 2014, Apple unveiled a pair of larger iPhone 6 models that kicked off a "supercycle" of upgrades and permanently blunted the high-end Galaxy sales of its top rival in premium smartphones, Samsung. However, it appears that iPhone 6 and 6S suffered statically high hardware failure rates in diagnostic testing, a problem that has since subsided in more recent models. What caused this mysterious problem, and how did Apple improve things?A class of hardware issues mysteriously ended with iPhone 7 Was it the 1.0 model syndrome? There's a legend among Apple punditry that gravely warns against ever buying the first model year of a new Apple product. This logic is grounded in the obvious reality that brand new products (like the original iPad in 2010) are often working out initial design issues and will almost certainly be dramatically improved in the next model or two, both in improved hardware and in software updates. That logic wasn't applied to iPhone 6 however. It was a brand new design … [Read more...] about Editorial: The mysterious curse of iPhone 6, lifted with… the headphone jack
