When we tested iOS 11 on the iPhone 5S, it was clear that it was slower than iOS 10 had been but that the iPhone 5S’ hardware was fast enough to keep everything usable. That’s especially true if you tempered your expectations: the phone was going on four years old at the time. But at the time, some of you asked us to test a handful of other older iOS devices, particularly the A7-equipped iPad Air and Mini 2 and the A8-equipped iPhone 6 Plus. In the iPads, the same A7 CPU and GPU that powers the iPhone 5S’ screen has to adequately support a tablet with more than three times as many pixels. And the A8 in the 6 Plus draws a 2208×1242 image which is then downscaled to the phone’s 1080p screen; that means using a CPU that was around 25 percent faster than the A7 and a GPU that was only 50 percent faster to support a phone with 277 percent as many pixels. The upshot is that those devices can often feel sluggish or laggy compared to subsequent models. Later Apple … [Read more...] about iOS 12 on the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPad Mini 2: It’s actually faster!

With the iPhone 5 missing out on the iOS 11 upgrade at the tail end of last year, we expected to see the iPhone 5S be up for the chopping block when iOS 12 rolls around, but a new rumor suggests that's not the case.A test on WebKit (an open source browser engine that's used within Safari) shows a listing from earlier in the year where the iPhone 5S was packed with iOS 12 software. It's not guaranteed to mean Apple will upgrade the iPhone 5S to the new software, but it does suggest the company is open to the idea and ready to test the older device with iOS 12.When will we know?Whether the iPhone 5S ultimately gets iOS 12 will likely come down to how the phone runs with the new software, and considering it's a device from 2013 it may not be powerful enough to handle the update. It's expected iOS 12 will focus on reliability and improved battery life on all devices, rather than sweeping new features that change the way you use your iPhone. We expect to learn more in the coming months, with … [Read more...] about iOS 12 may come to the iPhone 5S after all
The smart money expects that for the first time, the Apple iPhone 5s will not receive the next version of iOS this September. Last year, the cut-off model was the iPhone 5; any iPhone that was released after the iPhone 5 received iOS 11. With that in mind, one could come to the conclusion that the Apple iPhone 5s would be the cut-off model this year and iOS 12 will be made available to the iPhone 6 and later. But thanks to the open source nature of WebKit, the browser engine used by Safari, we were able to find a page that mentions a test run in January that included an Apple iPhone 5s running iOS 12. This is not a guarantee that those with the iPhone 5s will get one more year of running the most up-to-date version of Apple's mobile operating system. But it should give some hope to those still sporting the phone. We should know for sure when iOS 12 is unveiled during WWDC 2018. The annual developers conference begins June 4th and runs through June 8th, and will take place at the McEnery … [Read more...] about Apple iPhone 5s might get iOS 12 according to WebKit test
By Malcolm Owen Friday, April 20, 2018, 05:24 am PT (08:24 am ET) References to iOS 12, Apple's next iteration of its mobile operating system, have surfaced in development testing reports for WebKit, with the appearance strongly suggesting Apple will be bringing the next major iOS release to the iPhone 5s as the oldest supported iPhone model. Listings in the bug-reporting section of the open source Webkit project page, discussing API tests for the software, includes a report from one developer in January showing an implementation of the testing suite could be run using Python. The report, spotted by MacGeneration, specifically mentions iOS 12 in multiple sections, as well as the iPhone 5s, including the confirmation "iPhone 5s running iOS 12." Rather than an unreleased version of the operating system running on an actual iPhone 5s, the start of the report indicates this to be API tests running in a simulator, mimicking the iPhone 5s in software. If genuine, this would indicate … [Read more...] about iOS 12 will continue supporting iPhone 5S, WebKit developer reports suggest
Late last year, Apple admitted that it had throttled the CPU on some older iPhone models. These units contained worn out batteries that were not up to providing the handset with enough power to perform certain complex tasks. When that happened, the iPhone in question would shut down, forcing the user to reboot the phone. Apple included the software required to throttle these older models through the update to iOS 10.2.1, and never told the public what was going on until last December.Besides offering $29 battery replacements until the end of the year (reduced from $79) the company added certain tools in iOS 11.3 that allow iPhone users to monitor the health of the battery in their handsets. The update also allows owners of these models to block Apple from throttling the CPU on their phones, no matter the condition of the battery inside it. Apple is offering these tools to those who own the Apple iPhone 6 and newer versions of the device. However, the company did say that it has … [Read more...] about Apple iPhone 5s doesn’t receive the iOS 11.3 battery health features
