How to Get the Windows 10 Start Menu on Windows 11
Windows 11 made a number of functional and cosmetic changes to the Windows user interface. One of the most controversial is the new Start Menu, which takes up more space while displaying less information. Here’s how you can get Windows 10’s Start Menu on Windows 11. What’s Wrong With Windows 11’s Start Menu? Windows users are typically pretty resistant to change when it comes to the user interface (UI), especially when Microsoft changes prominent things like the Start Menu, the right-click context menu, or the taskbar. The Windows 11 Start Menu has proven to be one of the more controversial changes that came with Windows 11— it doesn’t display your installed applications without an extra click, you can’t show your pinned applications while displaying your installed applications, you can’t sort your pinned applications into groups, you can’t change the size of the icons of your pinned applications, and the entire recommended section is automatically populated. It looks … [Read more...] about How to Get the Windows 10 Start Menu on Windows 11
Windows 11 has a new way to protect you from your own bad judgement
Audio player loading… Microsoft has added a new feature to its Windows 11 operating system to help shield users against phishing and malware attacks. Smart App Control, a Windows 11 feature that protects against malicious or untrusted apps, now also blocks a number of new file types when they’re downloaded from the internet. Specifically, the service now blocks file types adopted recently by cybercriminals after Microsoft took steps to disable macros in downloaded Office documents. The list includes .lnk, .iso, .img, .vhd, .vhdx, .appref-ms, .bat, .cmd, .chm, .cpl, .js, .jse, .msc, .msp, .reg, .vbe, .vbs, and .wsf files. Blocking unsafe file types One of the most common ways people end up with a malware infection is by falling for a phishing scam. Although most are easy enough to spot to the trained eye, many people make the mistake of downloading attachments and following web links they shouldn't. The latest Windows update will go some way to … [Read more...] about Windows 11 has a new way to protect you from your own bad judgement
A new Winamp is here – but don’t get too excited (unless you’re on Windows 11)
Audio player loading… A new version of Winamp has arrived, with an initial RC1 (Release Candidate 1) installer for the classic media player now available to download. You may (or may not) fondly remember Winamp, but it certainly represents a major nostalgia trip for many folks who used the media player to listen to their MP3 tunes many years ago (the app was actually first released in 1997), complete with fancy visualizations, interface skins and the like. And now, a revamped version has arrived in the form of Winamp 5.9 RC1 Build 9999, which follows a version 5.8 release that happened back in 2018 . As spotted by Ghacks (opens in new tab) (via Bleeping Computer (opens in new tab) ), the release notes (opens in new tab) tell us that: “This is the culmination of 4 years’ work since the 5.8 release. Two dev teams, and a pandemic-induced hiatus period inbetween. “To the end-user, it might not seem like there’s a whole heap of changes, but the … [Read more...] about A new Winamp is here – but don’t get too excited (unless you’re on Windows 11)
One of the most useful Windows 11 tools is coming to Windows 10
Audio player loading… Microsoft is bringing pin-protected printing to its Windows 10 operating system - a feature that actually premiered on Windows 11 . The tech giant has a “scoped set of features” that it plans to bring over from Windows 11 in order to make bridging over from Windows 10 more natural, which are due to be shared between the operating systems in the near future. In an effort to avoid duplicate printouts, especially in busy offices and workplaces, Windows 11 (and now Windows 10) users are able to set a pin on their computer. The file(s) will only be printed once this pin is inputted into the printer . Pin-protected printing on Windows 10 The move isn't just linked to increased security and privacy, but in an environmentally conscious age, it should also drive down paper waste. Enterprise customers are also getting a printing-related feature bridged over to Windows 10: the Print Support App is designed to support new features and for … [Read more...] about One of the most useful Windows 11 tools is coming to Windows 10
Microsoft is testing a Game Pass sharing tier, announces Windows 11 widget
Something to look forward to: Microsoft's Xbox/PC Game Pass subscription service is already very popular, but that doesn't mean the Redmond giant isn't constantly adding new features. The latest addition should be very welcome for those with big families: a new plan that lets subscribers add four extra people to their account. It's also testing a widget as part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build. Microsoft writes that it is now testing a preview of the Game Pass sharing tier in Columbia and Ireland, one that is only available to Xbox Insiders. A spokesperson said each added member on the plan would "have their own unique access to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate games, content, and benefits," though some parts of the package could change based on feedback. The new option will be more expensive than the current top-tier Game Pass Ultimate level, which is $14.99 per month. Microsoft never said exactly how much it would be but writes that users can exchange one month of Ultimate for … [Read more...] about Microsoft is testing a Game Pass sharing tier, announces Windows 11 widget
