A new study from a North Carolina State University economist shows that BitTorrent piracy slightly boosts sales of albums that leak onto the Web prior to their official release. The academic evaluation, brought to our attention by TorrentFreak, contradicts claims by organizations like the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which claim that the leak of albums has a detrimental effect on sales of that album, and have made a particular point to go after those who leak albums in the courts. The study, authored by Robert Hammond, Assistant Professor of Economics at North Carolina State University, focuses on the effect of BitTorrent downloads of leaked albums, those made available for download prior to their official release date, rather than albums that are uploaded to BitTorrent sites after their commercial release. Hammond also focuses only on full album downloads and sales, not individual songs, because full albums remain the primary source of income (74.4 percent, … [Read more...] about BitTorrent piracy increases sales of ‘leaked’ albums: study

The holiday shopping season is upon us. Import prices are up as the U.S. dollar continues its descent, oil prices are hitting record highs, and the American economy is still struggling to absorb shocks from mortgage market problems, falling home values and tighter credit conditions.Given a backdrop of rising inflation and a slowing economy, what are e-commerce experts expecting from this holiday season? Though opinions vary, the outlook seems to be fair -- even better than you might expect, particularly when it comes to online sales of high-end consumer electronics.More than half of U.S. consumers will purchase one or more gifts online this year, "a number that creeps steadily higher each year," according to Steve Koenig, senior manager, industry analysis, at theConsumer Electronics Association."The value mindset of online holiday shopping definitely plays a role here," Koenig told the E-Commerce Times. "I can't comment on high-end CE versus other high-end goods, but I would expect … [Read more...] about High-End CE Sales Online, Part 1: Will Bells Be Ringing?
With online commerce now a hit for nearly every conceivable product category, from baseballs to diamonds, health insurance to Hot Wheels cars, Adshop Online is taking the next step: selling an entire Web site via the Internet.Adshop, a New York Internet advertising agency, plans to sell its Econotrade brokerage Web site in a private e-mail auction July 6 through 12. The winning bidder when the auction closes at 11:59 p.m. EST July 12 will immediately get control of the Web site, as currently built, and its domain name. The auction will be … [Read more...] about E-Commerce Site Goes On Sale Online
Though opinions are mixed, industry experts and economists expect a reasonably good holiday retail sales season this year despite an economy struggling with higher oil and import prices, decreasing home values and the after-effects of mortgage market problems. Online holiday sales, in particular, should do pretty well, though the outlook is more clouded for sales of high-end consumer electronics products, as Part 1 of this series discusses."Even though there is talk of recession, the GDP (gross domestic product) for third quarter 2007 in the U.S.A. was up over 3.5 percent, which was unexpected. This growth, in light of high oil prices, a housing credit crunch and a decrease in housing starts and sales was driven by consumer spending," noted Chip Arndt, executive vice president and cofounder of MerchantAdvantage."It is my belief that as the Fed eases interest rates for the last quarter of 2007, we will see that this GDP growth will remain constant with consumer spending leading the … [Read more...] about High-End CE Sales Online, Part 2: New Shopping Tools and Trends
