The US looks to kill Chinese chipmaking ambitions with ASML sales ban
What just happened? China has long sought to lessen its reliance on foreign chipmakers and focus on its home-grown options, part of the Made in China 2025 plan to update its domestic manufacturing capabilities. But those ambitions could be scuppered by the US, which wants to ban the sale of lithography tools produced by Netherlands-based ASML to the country. ASML, the world's largest supplier of lithography machines used in the chipmaking process, is already prohibited from selling its most advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment, which costs about $164 million per unit, to its Chinese customers as it cannot obtain an export license from the Dutch government due to pressure from the United States. Bloomberg writes that the US government is now pushing ASML to also stop selling its older deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography tools to Chinese clients. Despite being a generation old, the technology is still used to create chips found in phones, autonomous cars, PCs, … [Read more...] about The US looks to kill Chinese chipmaking ambitions with ASML sales ban
I drove the new 2017 Ford Mustang and couldn’t even start the engine
Audio player loading… I’ve made a massive mistake. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m lost in the middle of the countryside with a dead car that costs far more than my annual salary and I have no way of getting in contact with anyone. OK - let’s rewind a bit. I’ve never driven a car as a journalist (well, I have... but the two were unrelated. I can drive and I am a journalist... that’s not important though). But I came to the middle of an English forest to drive the new Ford Mustang 5.0 V8 GT, a 5-litre beast of a car that had me not sleeping the night before, such was my excitement. Usually the most-excellent John McCann writes these TechRadar Drives columns , looking at the hulking great behemoths of cars from a technology angle, the lucky beggar getting to try out hugely expensive new cars and pass judgement on them. But I’ve barely driven a car that’s worth a fifth of this Mustang I’m sat in (the convertible V8 I had starts at £41,595), and … [Read more...] about I drove the new 2017 Ford Mustang and couldn’t even start the engine
I almost ruined my Apple Watch. Here’s how to make sure you don’t
Audio player loading… I felt it happen; it was an almost sickening sensation. My beloved Apple Watch Series 7, squeezed like a slice of salami between a block of wood and my wrist that was supporting a nearly 75-pound package, meeting with a bit of grit that was dragging across it. My arms, suddenly taking on Herculean strength, quickly lifted the heavy package up to relieve the pressure, but it was too late. The sand or grit that was covering the wood frame had carved out a tiny, awful canyon across the once nearly pristine face of my Apple Watch Series 7. I blame myself. First of all, it's important to acknowledge that this is an aluminum Apple Watch Series 7 . Not stainless steel or titanium. This matters because the crystal is not made of the sapphire you might find on a high-end Breitling watch. Instead, it has Ion-X glass, which is supposed to approximate some form of sturdy Gorilla Glass. That watch glass, which is protecting the wearable's large, … [Read more...] about I almost ruined my Apple Watch. Here’s how to make sure you don’t
US selects four encryption algorithms to protect against future quantum attacks
Audio player loading… The US government has chosen four new encryption (opens in new tab) algorithms that should be able to protect secret digital communications from being decrypted by immensely powerful quantum computers. There is fear in the wider cybersecurity community that the current encryption standards, protecting much of today’s digital communications across both private and public sector endpoints (opens in new tab) , will be rendered useless once quantum computers take off. The four encryption algorithms will become part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) post-quantum cryptographic standard, the organization said in its announcement, adding that the standard should be finalized in “about two years”. Post-quantum cryptography “Today’s announcement is an important milestone in securing our sensitive data against the possibility of future cyberattacks from quantum computers,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina M. … [Read more...] about US selects four encryption algorithms to protect against future quantum attacks
I’d swap AirPods for Nothing Ear (2) earbuds if they can improve in these four areas
Audio player loading… Nothing's inaugural Ear (1) earbuds were, let's face it, a case of style over substance sonically. Glossy images of Nothing’s futuristic near-transparent units, with very friendly lady bugs perched atop the case, suggested quality and detailed workmanship – and there's no denying that due care an attention was taken in making them look good. The feature set – including Nothing's commendable new app – was better still, and the Nothing Ear (1) Black Edition brought Bluetooth 5.2 and improved the ANC to levels rarely seen at that price. IPX4 splash-proofing was also a nice touch, and the little red dot on the right earpiece made me wonder why other manufacturers don't offer this simple embellishment, but sound quality is ultimately the making or breaking of a set of wireless headphones and here, Nothing Ear (1) still fall short of the best wireless earbuds in terms of timing and neutrality across the frequencies, as well as for bass grip … [Read more...] about I’d swap AirPods for Nothing Ear (2) earbuds if they can improve in these four areas
