Best monitor 2022: the best monitors for every budget

July 29, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Editor's Note: July 2022 We've started the second-half of the year, so you know what that means: all those major product announcements back in January are now hitting the store shelves, whether digitally or at local brick-and-mortar retailers, and many of the best monitors have gotten updates this year. This includes a new entry on our list, the Gigabyte M32UC, an UHD curved gaming monitor that hits a sweet spot between price, performance, and features that make it a standout choice for gamers on a budget. - John Loeffler, US Computing Editor The best monitor for you will obviously depend on what you need it to do, whether it's gaming, photo editing, or including important features like picture-in-picture or multiple input sources. Fortunately, there is a monitor for every need on the market, but unfortunately, there are a lot of monitors with opaque names that make it nearly impossible to sift through them all to find the one you want. The computing team has done a lot … [Read more...] about Best monitor 2022: the best monitors for every budget

Best standing desk for home office and WFH 2022

July 22, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

The best standing desks around today can help offset and prevent a sedentary lifestyle. The health benefits they offer to those of us who spend all day in front of our computers can’t be understated. We are not meant to sit around all day. Sitting down too long – more than 8 hours a day – as stated by the American Journal of Public Health (opens in new tab) , can not only increase the risk of chronic diseases by 10% to 20% but premature death as well. UK's NHS points out (opens in new tab) that it also could slow your metabolism, which could impact "the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and break down body fat." Unfortunately, most of us spend a large portion of our work life hunkered down at an office desk (opens in new tab) , which is why a standing desk is a great investment. Even students going back to school should consider one for a healthier way to do homework. To help you make the leap to a healthier work life, we’ve collected the best … [Read more...] about Best standing desk for home office and WFH 2022

Netflix lost 970,000 subscribers in Q2, but it could have been much worse

July 20, 2022 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

In context: Netflix disclosed in its latest earnings report that it lost subscribers for the second straight quarter after more than a decade of sustained growth. Still, the video streaming giant is optimistic as the losses could have cut much deeper. When Netflix reported Q1 results back in April, the company said it expected to lose as many as two million additional subscribers in the second quarter. In actuality, Netflix shed just half that at 970,000 subscribers during the three-month period ending June 30. The second quarter was headlined by season four of Stranger Things . The highly anticipated original hit generated 1.3 billion hours viewed in its first four weeks to become Netflix's biggest English TV season yet. It also renewed interest in past seasons, with Netflix observing a greater than five-fold increase in views after season four dropped. It's been a rough year for Netflix as the company's stock has lost more than 65 percent of its value since early … [Read more...] about Netflix lost 970,000 subscribers in Q2, but it could have been much worse

Meta is shutting down one of its biggest VR games — but only for Quest 1 owners

August 7, 2022 by www.theverge.com Leave a Comment

Around the same time Meta hiked up the price on its Quest 2 headsets , it also announced that it’s ending Quest 1 support for Population One , a popular battle-royale shooter set in virtual reality. BigBox VR, the Meta-owned developer behind the game, shared the update in a post on its blog , noting that Quest 1 owners will no longer be able to launch or play the game starting October 31st, 2022. BigBox VR says the shutdown is necessary so it can focus on developing new experiences “that will push the boundaries of multiplayer VR.” Quest 1 players can still technically play the game if they have a VR-ready PC, however. The game supports cross-buy , which makes the PC version available via Air Link and Oculus Link . This should let users play Population: One by connecting their Quest 1 headset to their computer (whether wirelessly or with a wired connection). Players using the Quest 2, Oculus Rift, and Oculus Rift S will still have access to the game. While Meta’s … [Read more...] about Meta is shutting down one of its biggest VR games — but only for Quest 1 owners

August 8, 2022 by www.howtogeek.com Leave a Comment

Why Are Tripod Heads Important? If you’re just starting out and building your kit , you may be wondering whether you should bother with a tripod head at all. Some tripods come packaged with one, while others are designed to work with various options depending on the intended use. Do you really need a tripod? To get the most out of your tripod, you’ll want to invest in a good head to pair it with. A well-engineered tripod head allows a photographer or videographer to get the angles they need and lock the camera securely in place without hand-holding. You don’t have to spend over a grand on one, but it’s worth it to put a little money down, especially if you know you’ll be using a tripod often. Landscape photographers, wildlife shooters, and people that do a lot of night photography can all benefit from a sturdy tripod head. Like any other piece of kit, a tripod head is a tool. amazon: US recession: Why Apple and Amazon results are important

July 30, 2022 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

Apple and Amazon added about $175 billion to their combined market value after upbeat results boosted investor confidence on the ability of these firms to weather a slowdown in the economy. While analysts noted these companies were not completely immune to broader economic hurdles, they said the weakness in consumer spending is not likely to send these firms into the red, deeming them "always reliable to buck the trend." , Amazon's shares rose about 11 percent to $135.50 after the e-commerce titan forecast upbeat third-quarter revenue, while those of Apple rose more than 3 percent as the company said appetite for iPhones remained strong despite consumers' tightening spending. "The results are good enough to support Apple's stock, which has done much better in the current market rout, further justifying the company's "safe haven" status when the going gets tough," Haris Anwar , Investing.com analyst, said. The US stock market's hyper surge in the past … [Read more...] about amazon: US recession: Why Apple and Amazon results are important

Feature-packed LG Tone Free T90 wireless earbuds could put AirPods on notice

August 8, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… LG has just unveiled its new flagship wireless earbuds, and if they’re as good as promised they could be some of the best wireless earbuds ever made. Last year’s LG Tone Free FP8 true wireless earbuds were a solid alternative to the Apple AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds – albeit cheaper and not quite as impressive. This year LG has seemingly kicked its game up a notch with the Tone Free T90 buds, boasting improved drivers and materials that should make its sound quality better than ever. These drivers will be put to good use, too, as the T90s can support 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio . This should mean the audio quality and latency are more on-par with wired headphones than other wireless earbuds, helping to create a realistic soundstage that’s full of details that would otherwise be lost in a weaker connection. To help further enhance the soundstage, the LG’s Tone Free T90 buds will be the first wireless earbuds to use … [Read more...] about Feature-packed LG Tone Free T90 wireless earbuds could put AirPods on notice

Facebook and the ACLU tell court a “Like” is protected speech

August 12, 2012 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

In April of this year, the US District Court of Eastern Virginia decided that "liking" something on Facebook did not constitute free speech. Now, the five plaintiffs are taking their case to an appellate court, and this time, they have the support of the ACLU and Facebook behind them. The plaintiffs, all of whom worked in the Hampton, VA Sheriff’s Office, had originally sued for their First Amendment rights after three of the plaintiffs "liked" their boss’s political rival on Facebook and subsequently lost their jobs when he won the election and remained in office. The sheriff, B.J. Roberts, claimed that the terminations were due to cost-cutting measures, but the plaintiffs were able to prove that Roberts knew about the turncoat Facebook Likes in court. The district court still ruled that it "is the court’s conclusion that merely 'liking' a Facebook page is insufficient speech to merit constitutional protection," the ruling read. "In cases where courts have found that … [Read more...] about Facebook and the ACLU tell court a “Like” is protected speech

Spotify acquires Wordle’s song-based cousin ‘Heardle’

July 14, 2022 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

In context: Brain-teasing word guessing game Wordle is popular the world over for its bite-sized, easy-to-learn mechanics. It's so popular, in fact, that it has spawned plenty of knock-offs, competitors, and spiritual successors. One such game is "Heardle," a Wordle-like trivia game where users are asked to name a given song after only hearing a few seconds of the intro. Like its word-based cousin , Heardle gives players a limited number of attempts to guess a song -- six in total -- before they'll be locked out of guessing for the day. If you're completely stumped, you can choose to skip ahead a bit in the tune, though this occupies one of your guessing slots. It's an addictive formula, and after trying it briefly myself (and winning), I'm already anxiously waiting for tomorrow's Heardle. So, why are we discussing Heardle today? Moving forward, it will no longer be an independent game: Spotify is acquiring the popular music-based trivia title, much like The New York Times … [Read more...] about Spotify acquires Wordle’s song-based cousin ‘Heardle’
