Chen Aug 15, 2019 For most of our lives, we have been conditioned to share a piece of personal information without a moment’s hesitation: our phone number. We punch in our digits at the grocery store to get a member discount or at the pharmacy to pick up medication. As people hold on to older smartphones for longer stretches of time, it seems the most compelling impetus to plunk down cold hard cash for a brand new handset is 5G. It’s the one major tech that the current generation of 4G smartphones does not support, and it is almost universally viewed as the Next Big Thing. To take advantage of the new technology built into a 5G smartphone, external networking capabilities must be built into a geographical area, something that has not yet happened in most countries, including the U.S. Right now, only Verizon has launched a 5G network this year in some parts of Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, and today Providence, Rhode Island. AT&T has 5G networks in 19 cities, but no phones to take advantage of them. And T-Mobile promises to bring 5G to 30 cities, starting with New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Las Vegas. A 5G network also covers parts of London. Despite its limited geographical range, it hasn’t stopped smartphone makers from … [Read more...] about 5G mobile phones: Expensive, exciting, and on the rise
Have you ever paused to consider the fate of your old mobile phone number? I certainly hadn’t. That was until a middle-aged taxi driver from the home counties swivelled in his seat and, looking somewhat bewildered, enquired: “how long have you had those digits for?" Before I could respond, he continued: “I was waiting outside and typed your number into my phone. When I pressed call, my best friend’s name came up. He died eight years ago.” Eight years was how long I'd had this number. In an age where mobile phones exist as an extension of ourselves, the thought we could inhabit a strangers' phonebook for decades under a different alias is a little disconcerting. One look at your WhatsApp contacts list, for example, will likely reveal countless profile photos that don’t match the contact names they accompany. It stems, in part, from our desire to endlessly back-up information in a digital age – a move that’s led us to possess the … [Read more...] about The mobile phone afterlife connecting you to strangers worldwide
SONY could trump every other phone maker on the market when it comes to cameras – at least in terms of image size. The Japanese tech giant's highly anticipated Sony Xperia XZ4 is tipped to boast an enormous 52-megapixel snapper when it launches later this month. Apple and Samsung are expecting a major new Sony smartphone to arrive during the annual MWC 2019 tech show in Barcelona in late February. This handset is supposedly going to feature a large 6.5-inch screen and Qualcomm's powerful new Snapdragon 855 chipset. But a new report from Japanese tech site Sumahoinfo claims that the phone will also come equipped with a 52-megapixel camera. This trumps the iPhone XS (12 megapixels), Samsung Galaxy S9 (12 megapixels), and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro (40 megapixels). However, it's worth noting that megapixel count a phone camera offers doesn't actually mean you're getting a better picture. Megapixels refers to the number of pixels – the tiny dots of colour and light – … [Read more...] about Sony Xperia XZ4 could have HUGE 52-megapixel camera that beats every other phone
