For the past few years, it seems like Mitsubishi has been playing dead. The Japanese carmaker has eliminated models from its lineup and neglected others, while keeping launches of new and updated products to a minimum.Mitsubishi will at least show some signs of life at the 2015 New York Auto Show with the 2016 Outlander, a refreshed version of the current-generation model that debuted in 2013.The updated Outlander will debut the “new face of Mitsubishi,” the company says. That will almost certainly be the face we saw on the Outlander PHEV Concept-S from the 2014 Paris Motor Show, which is not a bad thing at all.Mitsubishi also claims the face-lifted crossover will feature over 100 engineering and design improvements, mostly aimed at increased refinement. The mechanical changes probably won’t be too dramatic, though. The big news will probably come several months after the 2016 Outlander goes on sale, when U.S. buyers will finally get ahold of the Outlander Plug-In … [Read more...] about 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander confirmed for 2015 NY Auto Show
Hybrid suv 2015
The departure of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution after the 2015 model year will leave a rally-car sized hole in enthusiasts’ hearts.Fear not, though, because Mitsubishi has a replacement in mind.It is, however, an SUV. At the recent Paris Motor Show, company product chief Kanenori Okamoto told Autocar that the Evo “will be replaced in spirit by an SUV with high performance.”The SUV will reportedly be a hybrid, with technology borrowed from the MiEV electric Pikes Peak racer, including a version of that car’s Super All Wheel Control all-wheel drive system, itself based on the system used in the current Evo.The concept actually isn’t too surprising given Mitsubishi’s recent emphasis on crossovers and green cars. While the Galant is gone and the Lancer has been left to rot, Mitsubishi has focused on the Outlander and Outlander Sport utility vehicles, and introduced the tiny the i-MiEV electric car and Mirage hatchback.Related: Mitsubishi Outlander … [Read more...] about Mitsubishi wants to replace the Evo… with an SUV?
Most Discovery Sports will never be driven off-road, or even through more than a quarter-inch of snow. That’s a shame, because this little SUV can tackle just about anything … and do it in style. This week, like a herd of hungry Caribou, the nation’s automotive journalists made a great migration to Reykjavik, Iceland. We all came here to the top of the world to drive the new 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport in one of the toughest winter climates on Earth. The location seems at once completely natural and totally absurd. Natural because the remote and forbidding places of the world are Land Rover’s home turf. Since 1948 the Land Rover brand has been the choice of hardy souls who had to get somewhere that was mostly nowhere, anywhere on the planet. The location is also absurd because we all know that, at least in America, 90 percent of these vehicles will be sold to your rich neighbor for his hot wife to drive to her Bikram yoga class. Most Discovery Sports will … [Read more...] about First drive: 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport
Engine of the Year Volvo T6 Drive-EAs governments around the world ratchet up fuel-economy and emissions standards over the coming years, automakers will need to find a way to lessen environmental impact without trimming power or refinement. After all, customers appear unwilling to part with either for increased efficiency. For us at Digital Trends, no automaker has seen the writing on the wall and stepped forward with an engine family that meets future standards better than Volvo with the Drive-E.Specifically, we love the twin turbocharged and supercharged T6 variant for its ability to offer six-cylinder levels of power – an impressive 306 horsepower – while returning the emissions and economy of a much smaller engine. We also applaud Volvo for its foresight in designing the Drive-E family to also pair with electric motors, for easy hybridization of its current and future models, which will further the engines’ enviable efficiency. With the T6 Drive-E engine, Volvo … [Read more...] about Digital Trends 2015 Car of the Year Awards
Rumors abound surrounding the next-gen Nissan GT-R. First, we had heard Godzilla himself might be killed and sent back to the primordial sea. Then, thankfully, we learned that the GT-R would live on but would skew a bit more mainstream than its uproarious current iteration. And now we’ve learned about its future powertrain.Yes, you guessed it: it’ll be a hybrid. Don’t wince! That’s a good thing. Well, probably.According to Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer: “There is an inevitability about electrification of all cars in the future, and there is the very real prospect of enhancements coming from it on a sports car like the Nissan GT-R. The electric systems can fill in the gaps in the torque curve and offer genuine performance gains, as well as lowering emissions. It’s win-win, and I’d expect to see some form of hybridization on the next generation of car.”The current GT-R is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 that makes … [Read more...] about Yeah it’s got a hybrid! Nissan exec suggest next-gen GT-R will be – literally – electric
A Bentley plug-in hybrid? I know it sounds weird, but apparently it’s going to happen. Though the hybrid won’t be out for its 2015 debut, Bentley has confirmed that its new 4×4 will feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain by 2017.This marks the beginning of an effort by Bentley to eventually produce hybrid versions of all of its cars. For the time being though, as Bentley Chairman Wolfgang Schreiber explained to Auto Express: ” The SUV will be the first Bentley hybrid because it’s based on a new platform with new technology. You need space for batteries and the technology, so we probably won’t do that for existing models. We will see hybrid versions of all of our cars, though.”While Schreiber, wily executive that he is, would not confirm that the new SUV would be getting a plug-in system, though he strongly hinted that it would. I would be shocked if that weren’t the case, given that by 2017 I expect most hybrids sold to have a plug-in … [Read more...] about A Bentley hybrid SUV? Don’t look so shocked; it’s coming in 2017
BMW is busily developing an all-new 5 Series, and a report coming out of Germany gives us a better idea of what to expect when it arrives in 2016.Called G30 internally, the next 5 Series will weigh at least 220 pounds less than the current model pictured above, thanks to the use of lightweight materials like aluminum and, to a lesser extent, carbon fiber. Building the next 5 with lightweight components will noticeably improve efficiency, a move that will help the sedan comply with the strict emissions regulations set to come into effect across Europe and in the United States over the coming years. To further cater to efficiency-minded buyers, BMW will introduce a plug-in hybrid variant of the next 5 early in the production run. Sources close to the Munich-based automaker have revealed the drivetrain will consist of a compact 109-horsepower electric motor linked to a lithium-ion battery pack that will work in conjunction with 2.0-liter four-cylinder … [Read more...] about Next BMW 5 Series lineup to include plug-in hybrid, 626-hp AWD M5?
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has gone so long without a significant update, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s dead. However, Mitsubishi reportedly has bigs plans for its sportiest model. The turbocharged rally-car-for-the-road known as the “Evo” may ditch the Lancer platform altogether, and gain a hybrid powertrain, according to Motor Trend. The next Lancer compact sedan will switch to a Renault platform, but a Mitsubishi insider told the magazine that said platform won’t be adequate for the performance targets the company has set for the next Evo.That car, the 11th Evo, will also reportedly be a technological showcase, somewhat similar in mission to the Nissan GT-R. Specifically, it will be showcasing Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid powertrain technology.Mitsubishi has tried to carve out a niche as a proliferator of plug-ins. The company launched the Outlander PHEV earlier this year, and showed two plug-in hybrid crossover concepts at the 2013 … [Read more...] about Will the mighty Mitsubishi Evo be powered by a 1.1-liter hybrid in its 11th generation?
The introductory ignition of future automotive drivetrain technologies, it would seem, are going to be fairly silent from here on out.Time was, when automakers had a new powertrain technology, they unveiled their latest breakthrough with a loud roar and a cloud of smoke. Things have changed, though, as has the global climate. From now on, state-of-the-art automotive technologies will be unveiled with a whisper and perhaps – at most – a cloud of steam.Take the Toyota FCV Concept you see above, for example. Toyota says it’s a nearly production-ready version of the Japanese automaker’s mass-market hydrogen fuel cell vehicle slated to go on sale in 2015.Designed to evoke the external aesthetics of both a catamaran and flowing water, the FCV Concept front end was penned to symbolize the “taking in air, emitting water” of the onboard hydrogen fuel cell.Side bodylines are intended to convey air-to-water with flowing, liquid-like door shapes and a wave-motif … [Read more...] about ‘Taking in air, emitting water’, Toyota’s FCV Concept does for hydrogen what Prius did for hybrids
SUVs certainly won’t win any fuel efficiency contests even with the latest hybrid technology, but they’re still hard to beat in terms of towing capacity and off-road prowess. And with gas prices lower than they’ve been in recent memory, their market share is increasing after years of slow but steady erosion. As of writing, it’s reasonably safe to take the SUV off the endangered species list, and to celebrate, we’ve compiled a list of the best SUVs you can buy. With wagons all but out of the picture, crossovers are the most common alternatives to traditional SUVs regardless of which segment you’re browsing. They’re generally better to drive and a lot more efficient but they’re not as capable, especially for buyers who are planning to go off the beaten path and/or tow something excruciatingly heavy on a regular basis. If you think a SUV is right for your family, read on to learn about the best ones on the market today. We’ve singled-out … [Read more...] about The best SUVs you can buy
