The cloud is mainstream but that’s old news. Cloud technology has been evolving and introducing better innovative solutions to enterprise requirements. Initially, with Amazon leading the pack, it was just AWS (Amazon Web Services) and S3 (Simple Storage Service). The cloud market has come a long way from there and it didn’t take much time either. I’d say innovation is a lot faster now than it used to be. Before long, cloud storage wasn’t the only solution available. Backup and disaster recovery industries soon followed and now we have a ton of available cloud technologies in the market. The two computing models that I want to explore in this article are: Hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud. Coming out of 2017, these two computing models were the talk of the entire industry. Neither of them is new but the implementation of both of them is now more favorable for the enterprise than ever before. Before discussing the two, I’d like to clarify both of them. … [Read more...] about The integral role of hybrid cloud and multi-cloud computing models for enterprises
Hybrid cloud model
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) upgrades are not for the faint of heart, but facilitating two such transitions in successive years while also outsourcing ERP in a hybrid cloud model is a bold undertaking. Sloan Valve CIO Tom Coleman is tackling these challenges to better position the plumbing products manufacturer for growth. 112-year-old Sloan makes toilets, sinks, faucets, soap dispensers and other such equipment for restaurants, hospitals and other commercial enterprises. Recent growth has required Sloan to upgrade its computing infrastructure, but the company has elected not to expand its corporate data center, located in its Franklin Park, Ill., headquarters. The hybrid cloud model will better enable Sloan to implement new financial software and connect it to critical business functions running in public clouds as SaaS applications, including applications for sales, customer relationship management (CRM), field services and other business processes, Coleman says. Hybrid cloud usage is growing faster than either the private or public cloud. In a large study conducted this year by Insight Avenue on behalf of vendor Suse, 66 percent of respondents expected hybrid cloud growth to continue, compared to 55 percent for private cloud and 36 percent for public cloud. And the hybrid cloud market is expected to grow from $33.3 billion in 2016 to $91.7 billion by 2021, at an annual rate of more than 22 percent, according to research firm MarketsandMarkets.Part and parcel of a hybrid cloud strategy is hybrid storage. Hybrid storage can be defined as a homogenous data store, which uses a policy engine to decide whether data should be stored on-premises or in the cloud. There are various mechanisms for moving the data into and out of the cloud, including iSCSI, the S3 API, NAS, and proprietary data transfer protocols.Hybrid storage can be the Achille’s heel of a hybrid cloud implementation, because while spinning up machine instances locally or on the … [Read more...] about Hybrid storage in 2018: still the Achilles heel of hybrid cloud strategies?
Last year, hybrid cloud was a priority for many enterprises, although with a certain amount of confusion about what it involved. This year, those ambitious plans are showing up as an approach to hybrid cloud that relies on platform as a service (PaaS) to take full advantage of cloud models. The enterprise view of hybrid cloud is becoming clearer and more sophisticated than simply using cloud alongside existing on-premises IT, says Adam Warby CEO of managed services provider Avanade (a Microsoft/Accenture joint venture). “The way I’ve seen it evolve is that people have been getting more focused on hybrid IT than on hybrid cloud, and that’s relevant because most people are having to deal with managing legacy and existing applications while trying to reinvent what they're doing as a business …. What we're seeing now are different workloads that really do need the ability to work seamlessly between on-premises and in-public cloud.” As an example, Warby points … [Read more...] about How to make hybrid cloud work
A funny thing happened on the way to the hybrid cloud: Building the infrastructure was a pain in the neck. That's what enterprise IT people in the Open Networking User Group have discovered. Last year, public cloud providers persuaded C-level executives to move significant corporate workloads to the cloud, but the tools weren't there to make it work, said Nick Lippis, co-founder and co-chairman of ONUG."There is a ton of custom work that has to be done," Lippis said.So the user group, which includes IT executives from hundreds of enterprises, chose building hybrid cloud infrastructure as its focus for this year. It will be the main topic at ONUG Spring 2017, taking place next week in San Francisco.ONUG's mission is to steer the IT industry toward open technologies that meet the real needs of enterprises and help the industry develop them. Representatives from Bank of America, eBay, Bloomberg, Gap, and other companies will speak at next week's conference.A year ago, at ONUG Spring 2016, … [Read more...] about Users’ orders: Make it easier to build hybrid clouds
