Stock Android has improved massively over the years, receiving plenty of polish and functionality since its launch roughly a decade ago. In the beginning, we didn’t have copy and paste, multi-touch, or even Wi-Fi tethering. Despite how far it’s come, there are plenty of cool features in ROMs, Android skins, and rival platforms we’d like to see in the pure version of Android.App twin (Xiaomi, Huawei) First popularized by devices from Xiaomi and Huawei, app twinning functionality has since made its way to Samsung phones, called Dual Messenger (seen above). It lets you run two accounts on one communication app. So if you want to run two WhatsApp or Facebook accounts on one phone, this makes it possible. This is especially handy if you have a dual-SIM phone and WhatsApp accounts for both personal and business use, or if you’re travelling. It’s not the biggest feature, but it’s been adopted by a few of the biggest brands around, so it wouldn’t … [Read more...] about 10 features from other ROMs, skins, and platforms we’d like to see in stock Android

This weekend's poll is a good old-fashioned smartphone shootout in the simplest of terms: whose 2016 flagship do you think ranks supreme? Samsung's Galaxy S7 showed up on the scene first this year, and it made a big splash (waterproofing puns aside). By going the Apple route and offering the "same" phone in two different sizes, Samsung's also allowing consumers a choice that LG and HTC are not with the G5 and 10, and I see a lot of big-phone fans opting for the S7 edge as their most recent smartphone upgrade choice. (Our review.) The LG G5, well, you know I'm not its biggest fan (review here), but LG has a fanbase, and at least some of those fans can see something in the G5 that puts it over the top of its competitors this year. A removable battery remains LG's standout feature in the flagship smartphone space, and a novel dual-camera setup does offer some interesting photo-taking opportunities. Whether the modules and various friends will pan out remains to be seen, but if you're nuts … [Read more...] about [Weekend Poll] Galaxy S7, LG G5, Or HTC 10?
HTC might not have seen the greatest sales from the HTC 10 when it launched back in 2016, but you have to hand it to HTC for maintaining support. The HTC 10 went from Marshmallow, to Nougat, and now to Oreo. The Verizon variant is the latest variant to get the update, but it might take some time to hit all devices. The OTA update (v 3.18.605.13) has all the usual Oreo features including picture-in-picture video, notification dots, and autofill providers. HTC has also adopted the new, lighter Oreo system theme you see on stock devices. It includes new security patches, too. A similar update has also hit the Sprint and unlocked versions. You can head to the update menu on your device to see about pulling down the update manually, but Verizon usually rolls OTAs out in batches. There's a Reddit thread about the update, and some owners report getting the update already. Don't rush this one—you've got to savor the update as this will probably be the last one the HTC 10 ever sees. … [Read more...] about Android 8.0 Oreo rolling out to the Verizon HTC 10
Update: A full specs list for the HTC U12 has leaked, complete with a rumored release month. The HTC U11 is an enormously impressive phone, but one with a headline feature that doesn’t quite convince, especially in the face of the flashy Samsung Galaxy S8 and now the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S9.So there’s room for improvement, and we’ve got a whole list of ways the HTC U12 (or whatever it ends up being called) could be the improvement we want to see. If HTC implements all of our suggestions it could well have a five-star phone on its hands. But before we get to that there’s the important matter of when the HTC U12 is likely to launch, what it’s likely to cost, and what specs and features it might include. We don’t have definitive answers to any of those questions just yet, but we have some ideas.Cut to the chaseWhat is it? HTC's next flagship phoneWhen is it out? Probably early-mid 2018What will it cost? A lot, expect upwards of … [Read more...] about HTC U12: what we want to see
