Intel in talks with automakers to produce vehicle chips as shortages bite

· April 13, 2021 ·

In a nutshell: Intel wants to step in and help the automotive industry by creating chips for vehicles. CEO Pat Gelsinger said the company aims to produce the silicon within six to nine months. We heard last week that Gelsinger was one of several executives from top chipmakers and auto manufacturers set to meet with high-level officials within the Biden administration to discuss the semiconductor supply chain issues. Execs from Dell, Samsung, Ford, HP, AT&T, Alphabet, General Motors, and others attended the April 12 meeting. Following yesterday’s gathering, Gelsinger said Intel was talking to companies that design chips for automakers about manufacturing them in its fabs. The CEO last month unveiled plans to open up the company’s current and planned manufacturing capacity to other chipmakers through the launch of Intel Foundry Services. Don’t buy this PS5 bundle today – wait for the next restock update

· April 11, 2021 ·

The hard-to-buy PS5 seems to be in stock today at certain online stores in the US, and while we do highly recommend bundles from GameStop, Antonline and Costco (resellers can't profit off of readily available games and accessories so availability lasts longer), you should stay away from overpriced PS5 options as well as scams in which you'll never get the console. No one on social media will sell you a console. Real PS5 restock alerts: Follow @mattswider, our PS5 restock Twitter tracker for notifications when the next PS5 restock is live at all US stores. It's the fastest way to get real-time updates. Do not buy directly off Twitter users – which are all scams – only to the websites Matt points you to. The biggest offender with the household name is Sears , which enables third-party resellers to charge $1,099 or more for a a variety of PS5 bundles. We've seen good bundles go for as much as $800 with three games included, an extra controller and the PS5 camera, but … [Read more...] about Don’t buy this PS5 bundle today – wait for the next restock update

Google is poisoning its reputation with AI researchers

· April 13, 2021 ·

Google has worked for years to position itself as a responsible steward of AI. Its research lab hires respected academics, publishes groundbreaking papers, and steers the agenda at the field’s biggest conferences. But now its reputation has been badly, perhaps irreversibly damaged, just as the company is struggling to put a politically palatable face on its empire of data. The company’s decision to fire Timnit Gebru and Margaret Mitchell — two of its top AI ethics researchers, who happened to be examining the downsides of technology integral to Google’s search products — has triggered waves of protest. Academics have registered their discontent in various ways. Two backed out of a Google research workshop, a third turned down a $60,000 grant from the company, and a fourth pledged not to accept its funding in the future. Two engineers quit the company in protest of Gebru’s treatment and just last week, one of Google’s top AI employees, a research manager named Samy Bengio who … [Read more...] about Google is poisoning its reputation with AI researchers
