Britain is increasing purchases of Indian oil amid the Western sanctions war with Russia – but much of it is likely refined from Russian product sold to India at a discount. While there is a general perception that Russia has become a pariah state since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with only the likes of Iran and North Korea allegedly offering covert support, many governments in Africa, Asia, and South America have largely stayed out of the West’s economic war with Moscow, including countries considered traditional allies such as Israel , India , and even NATO member Turkey . Indeed, India took advantage of the slowdown in the energy trade, in particular, between Russia and the European Union early on in the conflict to ink a deal to purchase Russian oil at a significant discount — and Britain, one of the key cheerleaders for sanctions on Russia, has found itself stepping up purchases of that oil after it has been processed at Indian refineries, … [Read more...] about Sanctions Fail: UK Buying Up More ‘Indian’ Oil Made from Russian Crude

Russian firms are being bombarded with DDoS attacks
Audio player loading… As Russia’s military was bombarding Ukraine, back at home, Russian companies were being bombarded with Distributed Denial of Service (opens in new tab) (DDoS) attacks - with such incidents against Russian entities reaching new highs in 2022. Figures from Rostelecom, Russia's biggest ISP, claim there were 21.5 million DDoS attacks carried out against some 600 organizations in the country in 2022. Most of the attacks happened in and around Moscow, where the majority of these companies are headquartered. None of the bigger sectors seems to have been spared, with firms in telecom, retail, finance, and the public sector, all experiencing attacks. TechRadar Pro needs you! India’s Coal Demand Surges After Renewables Shortfall, Russian Oil Imports Jump 3,300%
India’s power ministry is projecting an eight-percent surge in coal demand during the next fiscal year after renewables underperformed by nearly 30 percent in 2022, while India’s imports of discounted Russian oil surged by an amazing 33 times year-on-year in December. India’s huge jump in Russian oil imports was calculated by Bloomberg News on Monday based on cargo tracking data. The data showed deliveries of Russian oil rising by 29 percent from November to December, the latest in a series of increases that brought India up to 1.2 million barrels of Russian oil per day – 33 times the amount India was buying from Russia in December 2021. Bloomberg News noted Russia is selling at a price India just cannot refuse and, while there is doubtless some grumbling about India compromising the U.S. and European effort to isolate Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, India’s relationship with the U.S. is too important to risk with a fiery confrontation: Indian refiners have … [Read more...] about India’s Coal Demand Surges After Renewables Shortfall, Russian Oil Imports Jump 3,300%

Yandex denies it was hacked, says rogue employee to blame for breach
Audio player loading… Russian internet giant Yandex has denied it suffered a cyberattack after some of its internal source code was posted online. The leaker posted 44.7GB worth of files, which they say are "Yandex git sources", as Torrent on a well-known hacker forum, with much of the company's source code believed to be included. The files are thought to date back to February 2022, and although the leak does contain some API keys, these are only thought to have been used for testing deployment. TechRadar Pro needs you! The FBI says it has infiltrated and shut down the notorious Hive ransomware group
Audio player loading… A major law enforcement operation has led to one of the most dangerous ransomware groups around today being infiltrated and essentially shut down. In July 2022, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) managed to infiltrate the notorious Hive collective and save its corporate victims upward of $130 million by warning of impending attacks and circulating decryption keys. However, many of the organization’s key players remain at large, and so the cybersecurity research community isn't convinced that the threat has completely subsided yet. The specter of ransomware A statement (opens in new tab) from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) notes the total collapse of Hive, including its websites and communication channels, followed a multinational operation by the DOJ, FBI, Secret Service, and law enforcement agencies in European countries such as Germany and the Netherlands. At Least 40 Dead Including Children in Missile Strike, Russia Denies
AFP — The toll from a devastating strike on the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro was expected to rise past 40 on Tuesday as rescuers searched the rubble for 25 people still missing after one of Russia’s deadliest attacks since its invasion. President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the missile strike as a war crime. “There is no doubt: every person guilty of this war crime will be identified and brought to justice,” Zelensky said in his nightly address late Monday. Kyiv has called for more weapons to defend itself and at the weekend received pledges of British tanks, but Russian President Vladimir Putin warned more armaments would only intensify fighting and the Kremlin vowed to burn the gear. Red Wings Star Defends Orthodox Church’s Views on Homosexuality
Detroit Red Wings superstar Pavel Datsyuk, who is Russian, defended his church’s views on homosexuality when asked to respond to comments by Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva, a two-time Olympic champion, who fiercely defended Russia’s anti-gay law. “If we allow to promote and do all this stuff on the street, we are very afraid about our nation because we consider ourselves like normal, standard people,” Isinbayeva said last week . “We just live with boys with woman, woman with boys.” Isinbayeva continued, “Everything must be fine. It comes from history. We never had any problems, these problems in Russia, and we don’t want to have any in the future.” An official from Russia’s Orthodox church has said : “This is a very dangerous apocalyptic symptom, and we must do everything in our powers to ensure that sin is never sanctioned in Russia by state law, because that would mean that the nation has embarked on a path of self-destruction.” Datsyuk responded by … [Read more...] about Red Wings Star Defends Orthodox Church’s Views on Homosexuality
