Japanese roboticists recently showed off a female android singing and dancing along with a troupe of human performers. Video of the entertaining and surprisingly realistic demonstration received went viral on the Net. How did they do it? To find out, I spoke to Dr. Kazuhito Yokoi, leader of the Humanoid Research Group at Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, known as AIST. The secret behind the dance routine, Dr. Yokoi tells me, is not the hardware -- it's software. The hardware, of course, plays a key role. The AIST humanoids group is one of the world’s top places for robot design. Their HRP-2 humanoids are widely used in research. And the group's latest humanoids, the HRP-4 and a female variant, the HRP-4C, which is the robot in the dance demo, are even more impressive. But now the biggest innovation is a new software to program the movements of the robot. The software is similar to those popularly used in CG character animation. … [Read more...] about How to Make a Humanoid Robot Dance

Bringing something fresh to the crowded zombie-movie genre isn’t easy, but director Marc Forster’s World War Z manages to do just that by offering a global perspective on the proliferation of the living dead. But for many people, it wasn’t the scope of the film that first caught their attention – it was the image of a seemingly never-ending waves of zombies featured in several scenes from the first trailer. While the plot of World War Z is compelling stuff on its own, impressive visual effects play a big role in establishing the film’s unique tone. It costs a whole lot of money to make a video game even for independent developers, and with the introduction of new, more computationally intensive games (better graphics, artificial intelligence, physics, etc.), that cost naturally grows. That’s why Sony was so quick to emphasize how developer-friendly the PlayStation 4 architecture is during its Wednesday night press conference. Just because the console offers a lot of horsepower and accessibility to developers though, doesn’t mean it’s cheap to develop games for. The rising costs of development during the last transition drowned many console developers, from Midway to Atari. Will the spike in costs on PS4 be as dramatic?“It’s not as scary as some people led you to believe,” said Guerilla … [Read more...] about New tech is great but how much will it cost to make a PlayStation 4 game?
Build the characters and environmentsIt’s time to get down to the nitty gritty and start building that game of yours.
