The Los Angeles Times ran a column Monday in which an Oakland gun club leader suggests California liberals get “uneasy when it comes to the idea of black folks being armed.” The gun club leader, Nathan W. Jones, made his comment just days after the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) struck down New York’s proper cause requirement for concealed carry permit issuance. SCOTUS struck down New York’s requirement on June 23. On June 24 both California and New Jersey reacted to the ruling by striking certain concealed carry permit requirements in their states. The LA Times notes that Jones, leader of the Black Gun Owners Association, believes SCOTUS’s pro-2A ruling comes at a time when black Americans have awoken to the need to carry guns for self-defense. Jones said, “I had visions of mobs dragging people through the streets, and something just kind of switched. … We can’t rely on anybody else to come and save us. It has to be us.” But Jones makes clear that he is not sure how … [Read more...] about Oakland Gun Club Leader: California Liberals ‘Uneasy When It Comes to the Idea of Black Folks Being Legally Armed’

White Sox’s Liam Hendricks Claims Getting Gun Easier than Getting Driver’s License
Chicago White Sox’s Liam Hendricks criticized United States gun policy on July 4, claiming it is easier to get a firearm than it is a to get driver’s license. Hendricks told NBC White Sox, “I had to take a driving test when I [came] over [to America]. I won’t have to take a test if I want to get a gun. That’s stupid. Whoever thought that was a great idea is an idiot.” Hendricks, who is from Australia, said of America, “There is a lot of things that are good over here but, if you look at the negatives … I can walk into a store as a non-American and buy a handgun, in certain states, and that baffles me.” The United States has had background checks on retail gun sales since 1998. Those checks include a requirement that the would-be buyer complete an ATF Form 4473, which is a background check form asking criminal and mental history questions. Once the form is filled out a phone call is placed to the FBI to verify there is no criminal history in the would-be buyer’s record, and … [Read more...] about White Sox’s Liam Hendricks Claims Getting Gun Easier than Getting Driver’s License
Waymo, Aurora, Uber, and others urge California to lift its ban on heavy-duty self-driving trucks
California is at risk of losing its “competitive edge” if it doesn’t lift a ban on the operation of autonomous semitrailer trucks on public roads, a group of 35 industry leaders said in an open letter to Governor Gavin Newsom. The letter is signed by a cross section of autonomous vehicle companies, delivery and logistics firms, and automakers, including Waymo, Aurora, TuSimple, Embark, UPS, Volvo, and Uber Freight. The group urges Newsom to revisit rules prohibiting heavy-duty self-driving trucks from public testing. California has permitted public testing of light-duty autonomous trucks since 2019 . But vehicles that weigh more than 10,001 pounds — which include walk-in delivery trucks, semi trucks, buses, and heavy-duty construction vehicles — are not allowed under the state’s permitting system. Class 1 and 2 trucks — which include minivans, pickup trucks, utility vans, and step vans — can receive permits for testing and commercial deliveries under the current rules. … [Read more...] about Waymo, Aurora, Uber, and others urge California to lift its ban on heavy-duty self-driving trucks

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has warmly applauded the Supreme Court of the United States’ (SCOTUS) pro-2nd Amendment decision striking down a New York law that had set restrictions on those looking to carry guns in public. DeSantis’ comments came Thursday after the 6-3 ruling that New York’s proper cause requirement for concealed carry permit issuance is unconstitutional, as Breitbart News reported . The Tallahassee Democrat set out the governor’s praise for the gun law change. “I think it was definitely the right decision,” DeSantis said during a press conference in Broward County focused on efforts to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Facebook could be sued for addicting children under California bill
Before the summer ends, California may pass the first US bill that would hold social media companies liable for product features that research has found are harmful to children. If passed, the law could have far-reaching consequences, potentially impacting how kids throughout the US use social media sites like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. On Tuesday, the bill— the Social Media Platform Duty to Act —cleared what The Wall Street Journal called "a crucial vote in the State Senate." Although much of prior reporting on the bill focused on its earlier goal to grant a parent's right to sue over harm to individual children, WSJ reports that the amended version of the bill would instead "permit the state attorney general, local district attorneys, and city attorneys in California's four largest cities to sue social media companies" for unfair business practices known to harm children. Following this week's California Senate Judiciary Committee 8-0 vote, to stay alive, the bill has … [Read more...] about Facebook could be sued for addicting children under California bill
Gavin Newsom Signs Bill Restricting AR-15 Marketing, Advertisements
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed legislation Friday that will restrict the marketing methods and advertisement locations for AR-15 rifles. The legislation he signed is contained in AB 2571. On February 18, 2022, the Associated Press reported that California Assembly Member Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D) introduced AB 2571 to “limit the type of firearms advertising and marketing that can be geared toward children.” As he signed the legislation Newsom said : From our schools to our parks to our homes, our kids deserve to be safe. In California, we’re making that a reality. As the Supreme Court rolls back important gun safety protections and states across the country treat gun violence as inevitable, California is doubling down on commonsense gun safety measures that save lives. The lives of our kids are at stake and we’re putting everything on the table to respond to this crisis. Newsom posted a video in which he commented on the gun control legislation and referred … [Read more...] about Gavin Newsom Signs Bill Restricting AR-15 Marketing, Advertisements
Whoopi Goldberg: SCOTUS Decision on Concealed Weapons ‘Middle Finger to New York’ — It’s Insane
Whoopi Goldberg told her co-hosts Thursday on ABC’s “The View” that the Supreme Court ruling to overturn a New York state law that required “proper cause” to get a concealed carry permit was the equivalent of the highest court giving “a middle finger to New York.” Goldberg said, “Now people are still processing all of this. The implications, we don’t know really what it actually means, but, you know, given everything New York City is going through, it seems — I don’t even have the words. It seems –” Co-host Ana Navarro said, “Stupid?” Goldberg said, “No. It’s worse than that. It’s worse than that. It’s not even stupid.” Co-host Joy Behar said, “It’s insane.” Co-host Sara Haines said, “It’s a death wish of sorts.” Whoopi Goldberg replied, “No. It’s so — it’s such a middle finger to New York. It’s a middle finger to New York because, you know, we have been trying to figure out how to get a handle on all that has been going on in this city, in particular with gun laws. It … [Read more...] about Whoopi Goldberg: SCOTUS Decision on Concealed Weapons ‘Middle Finger to New York’ — It’s Insane
Facebook removed posts on abortion pills even when they didn’t break any rules
The status of legal access to abortion is now prohibited, restricted, or uncertain in more than half of the US. However, abortion pills are still deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration, and it's still legal for consulted certified prescribers to mail abortion pills to patients in any state. Thousands took to social media to post and raise awareness of options for mail-ordering abortion pills, only to have their posts deleted within minutes, sparking user protests of censorship. Facebook and Instagram confirmed in an Associated Press report that posts offering to mail abortion pills to people in states suddenly without access would continue to be removed. These posts violate company policies that prohibit the gift or sale of pharmaceuticals or drugs on the platforms, a Meta spokesperson told AP. On Instagram, Community Guidelines say that buying and selling pharmaceutical drugs is not allowed but do not directly state that posts offering pharmaceutical drugs as gifts … [Read more...] about Facebook removed posts on abortion pills even when they didn’t break any rules
Woke Service Members Question Their Oaths after Roe v. Wade Overturn
Some woke members of the military are publicly questioning their oaths of enlistment after the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in a recent court ruling. One Army captain tweeted after the ruling came down, “I’m supposed to defend this country?” The tweet was later deleted. An active-duty Army judge advocate general tweeted: “this may be dramatic but how I do reconcile with myself that I feel as though I serve a country that doesn’t view me as a full person, a country that doesn’t protect me back?” Another active-duty U.S. Army captain tweeted: “Pack the fucking court.” An Army medic with 4,940 followers on TikTok — whose bio read “My account absolutely reflects the [Department of Defense]” — posted a video in which she is shown first wearing her Army uniform and later civilian clothes, saying: “How am I supposed to swear to support and defend the Constitution and a country that treats its women like second-class citizens? How am I … [Read more...] about Woke Service Members Question Their Oaths after Roe v. Wade Overturn
The archnemeses of war rugs
Aaron Davies remembers being blown away by the colors. Instead of the muted tones and abstract motifs of traditional Persian carpets, the rug in front of him depicted a map of Afghanistan surrounded by guns and tanks, woven with fluorescent pink, green, and blue threads. Known as a “war rug,” the textile made by Afghan weavers had traveled all the way from Peshawar, Pakistan, to his home in the United Kingdom in a battered cardboard box. “I just thought they were amazingly interesting,” says Davies, “It’s just such a bizarre concept to put on a rug.” Peshawar, near Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, is home to a large Afghan refugee community and is a center of the country’s rug trade. Davies had purchased the rug online from a seller going by Imran Khan, who later told Davies that his store had been removed from eBay and he was having trouble moving his rugs. Would Davies be interested in buying some war rugs in bulk and selling them on? Taking a gamble, Davies put in an order … [Read more...] about The archnemeses of war rugs
