Audio player loading… Microsoft has revealed it is tracking more than 100 threat actors deploying ransomware (opens in new tab) against businesses around the world. In a recent Twitter thread (opens in new tab) , the company discussed the current state of ransomware, saying the Ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) ecosystem continues evolving and expanding. The threat actors (of which the company tracks more than 100) are bringing “varying techniques, goals, and skillsets” to the fray. Right now, more than 50 unique ransomware families are active and in use, the company said. Focusing on the build-up While phishing remains the number one way for hackers to deliver ransomware payloads to victims, they’re “increasingly” relying on other techniques, as well, Microsoft added. Among others, they’re using malicious ads to deliver victims to websites hosting ransomware and other malware. After Mass Layoffs, Zuckerberg Says Meta Focused on ‘Efficiency’
Facebook parent Meta had a rough 2022. The social media giant laid off thousands of workers , reported its first revenue drop and saw a decline in daily active users on Facebook . Now Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the company is focusing heavily on efficiency in 2023 as it continues to invest in the metaverse and artificial intelligence. For the last 18 years, the social network has grown rapidly, but it's entering a new phase, Zuckerberg said. "It's very hard to really crank on efficiency while you're growing that quickly and I just think we're in a different environment now," he said during a call with analysts on Wednesday after Meta reported better-than-expected revenue in the fourth quarter. If the company becomes more efficient, he said, Meta will be able to do better product work and become a more fun place to work because employees will get more done. The focus shows how Meta is responding to economic uncertainty as advertisers pull back spending. Meta has … [Read more...] about After Mass Layoffs, Zuckerberg Says Meta Focused on ‘Efficiency’

AMD admits to restraining chip supply to keep higher CPU and GPU prices
In context: Gamers have been lamenting about the high prices of graphics cards for what seems like forever. We all got excited when crypto mining became obsolete, just knowing that we were finally going to see prices come down, but for the most part, they haven't. The latest GPUs are still out of reach for the average consumer, and even older cards are holding their value. If you haven't noticed, the tech industry is suffering a significant contraction. Executives are panicking as they try to pinch pennies with layoffs and other measures to keep investors happy. One of those "other measures" is restraining product supply. In a Tuesday evening investors call, AMD CEO Lisa Su tried to calm investor anxiety by pointing out that the company has been, and will continue to, undership GPUs to "balance supply and demand." Of course, that's just another way of saying, "we're going to keep prices inflated by lowering our output." "We undershipped in Q3, we undershipped in Q4," Su told … [Read more...] about AMD admits to restraining chip supply to keep higher CPU and GPU prices
Authorities arrest Sam Bankman-Fried on FTX fraud and money laundering
What just happened? Investors taken to the cleaners by Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX exchange will probably be pleased to hear that the man who admittedly made a lot of "mistakes" that cost them their money is in police custody today on fraud and money laundering charges. He was arrested last night in his Bahamian headquarters at the request of US officials. Sam Bankman-Fried was scheduled to testify before Congress today, but he won't make that appointment. Bahamian police arrested the former cryptocurrency magnate on Monday night at the request of US authorities. Even Netflix doesn’t know what its password-sharing rules should be
Audio player loading… Netflix seemingly hasn’t decided what its password-sharing rules should be, as it’s recently made changes to those rules, only to revert to its original ones almost immediately. If you’ve somehow missed it over the past year or so, Netflix has been saying that it wants to stop users from sharing their passwords . This is because, as the company sees things, these sharers are undermining its ability to invest in its platform and content – weakening its position as one of the best streaming services and reducing the amount it can invest in new best Netflix shows . But exactly how it will restrict password sharing may not yet have been finalized – with the rules seemingly changing and changing again in the span of a few days. In 2017 Volvo marked itself as something of a pioneer in the auto industry when then-CEO Hakan Samuelsson announced that the company would focus on electrification in the coming years, with a goal of selling a million electrified cars by 2025. It's not doing too badly in that regard—already in 2021 a quarter of its sales were plug-in hybrids or battery-electric vehicles , which grew to one in three during 2022. But there's plenty more to come. Today, Reuters reported that Volvo has six new EVs in development to go on sale by 2026. We've already seen the first of these unveiled— the EX90 SUV . This will use Volvo's new SPA2 architecture , to be built in South Carolina next year, and features an advanced suite of sensors, including roof-mounted lidar. According to Reuters, the XC90 will be followed by EV replacements for the S60 and S90 sedans and the XC40 and XC60 SUVs.
