Earlier this week we learned that worldwide smart speaker sales are expected to increase sixfold within the next couple of years. This mirrors multiple studies that say the majority of U.S. households will have a smart speaker by 2022, powered by current leading intelligent assistants Google Assistant and Alexa. At the same time, tech giants making intelligent assistants seem to want to have it both ways, selling products to both consumers and governments. For example, Microsoft, maker of Cortana, may be supplying facial recognition software to ICE, the government agency tasked with capturing and detaining immigrants who are in the United States illegally. SoundHound today announced it has closed a $100 million funding round to accelerate the international growth of its Houndify voice AI platform, adopt new languages, open additional offices, and put its Hound voice assistant in devices from home appliances to cars. Investors in the round include Tencent, Hyundai, Orange S.A., and Daimler AG. Developers have chosen the Houndify platform to place voice control in more than 1,000 devices, bypassing options like Microsoft’s Cortana, Amazon’s Alexa, and Google Assistant. SoundHound is currently used to power conversational interfaces for Hyundai cars, the Nvidia Drive autonomous vehicle platform, Bunn coffee makers, and home robot Kuri from Mayfield Robotics. A friend who did not drink was at the wheel of Tex's SUV. Diane was in the front passenger seat and Tex was right behind her. He says he was fast asleep. Not far from home, they hit traffic and exited the highway. Tex says he woke up afraid that they were in a bad neighborhood.
