Voice assistant technology is supposed to make our lives easier, but security experts say it comes with some uniquely invasive risks. Since the beginning of the year, multiple Nest security camera users have reported instances of strangers hacking into and issuing voice commands to Alexa, falsely announcing a North Korean missile attack, and targeting one family by speaking directly to their child, turning up their home thermostat to 90 degrees, and shouting insults. These incidents are alarming, but the potential for silent compromises of voice assistants could be even more damaging. Nest owner Google — which recently integrated Google Assistant support into Nest control hubs — has blamed weak user passwords and a lack of two-factor authentication for the attacks. But even voice assistants with strong security may be vulnerable to stealthier forms of hacking. Over the past couple of years, researchers at universities in the US, China, and Germany have successfully used … [Read more...] about Could hackers trick voice assistants into committing fraud? Now that I've given this odd little device a chance to prove its worth in my home, the time has come to finish the review. Out of the gate, I must confess to a little personal surprise at just how little my opinions have changed from the first 24 hours I had to spend with the device. As such, I'm not going to repeat everything I said in my first post. This is an addendum. I will touch on all of the subjects again and add details where there is more to say – because there is still a lot to say. Also, I want to thank … [Read more...] about Google Home review: Three weeks with a voice assistant that’s actually worth talking to
Anyone who uses a smartphone can attest to the incredible power of real-time, in-the-moment discovery that leads to decisions and outcomes. But, now in an age of voice-assisted devices, we are further empowered to command information or purchase on-demand. “OK Google, Alexa, Hey Siri, what are the best bluetooth headphones for me?” Or, “Please reorder groceries from last week for delivery tomorrow afternoon.” Like mobile shopping, voice-assisted behavior is also becoming second-nature. Brands must now reimagine the customer journey and design for always-on, continuous and assistive engagement…dedicated for voice and mobile screens. Every day, customers are becoming more and more mobile and as a result, more informed, empowered, demanding and impatient. Contrary to popular Anglocentric belief, English isn’t the world’s most-spoken language by the total number of native speakers — nor is it the second. In fact, the West Germanic tongues rank third on the list, followed by Hindi, Arabic, Portuguese, Bengali, and Russian. (Mandarin and Spanish are first and second, respectively.) Surprisingly, Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and Microsoft’s Cortana recognize a relatively narrow slice of those. It wasn’t until this fall that Samsung’s Bixby gained support for German, French, Italian, and Spanish — dialects collectively spoken by 616 million people worldwide. And it took years for Cortana to become conversant in Spanish, French, and Portuguese. So why the snail’s pace of innovation? If you’re looking for an explanation, a good place to start might be the techniques used to train speech recognition algorithms. AI assistants, as it turns out, are … [Read more...] about Which voice assistant speaks the most languages, and why?
By the end of 2021, more than 1.6 billion people will use voice assistants on a regular basis, and it is certain they will want to do more than ask about the weather or hear their favourite song. Such assistants will provide retailers with an unprecedented opportunity as consumers use them to find, research and buy products. For this reason, exploring how voice assistants can improve the customer experience is a core focus for many retailers right now. Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) is powering voice technology systems and be it Alexa, Siri or Google Home, these platforms are enabling customers to interact with brands in ways that are not only convenient but also highly personalised and contextualised. In a conversational AI world, virtual assistants will search, open, fetch, command and engage the dozen or more websites, portals, apps and systems we all interact with daily. “My virtual agent does that” will become the new “there … [Read more...] about How voice-assisted commerce is speaking up in retail
