I remember like it was yesterday. Apple unveiled the super-advanced but arguably unattractive iPhone X on September 12, 2017, needing almost two more months to actually release the company’s first “all-screen” OLED handset. The method used by the Cupertino-based tech giant to reduce the bezels that were universally regarded as unnecessarily thick was hardly innovative, taking cues from both Sharp and Essential, but as so often happens, Apple made the notch mainstream. Over the years, Android smartphone manufacturers frequently found inspiration in features and designs made popular by Apple, but this was hardly the case here. The iPhone X notch was mocked, insulted, abused, and ultimately reluctantly embraced by those that understood the benefits of an OLED panel and Face ID technology far outweighed the cosmetic downside. Inexplicably, Apple rivals still adopted the iPhone X look, even though very few of them were also able to replicate the 3D facial recognition magic. … [Read more...] about Best no-notch high-end smartphones available in the US today
High end smartphones 2017
Is there such a thing as too many cameras on one phone? You know, not everyone wants to own an ultra-high-end smartphone. Or at least not everyone insists on owning a so-called flagship mobile product if that means spending north of $800, 900, even $1,000.I realize that must come as a shock to many of you, but in fact, the vast majority of global smartphone buyers today prefer something that doesn’t equate to the annual minimum wage in Indonesia. Let that sink in for a moment - there are people out there that would need to work a whole year just to purchase a 64GB iPhone XS.Of course, you can understand why most companies choose to focus their R&D efforts and advertising campaigns primarily on “premium”, costly handsets. There’s also OnePlus, which owes its rapid rise to fame entirely to “flagship killers.” No, the mid-range OnePlus X doesn’t count.Meanwhile, one brand continues to swim against the tide, releasing over a dozen affordable … [Read more...] about We don’t need the Nokia 9 yet, and HMD is smart to delay a high-end release
Vide: What's new in Google's latest update to Android P?Chinese phone maker Oppo has unveiled the Oppo Find X, an Android smartphone with a 6.4-inch OLED display that spans almost its entire front surface.Rather than follow the standard notch answer to edge-to-edge displays, Oppo has gone with a mechanical pop-up camera behind the display, leaving the screen free of any cutouts for the selfie camera and facial-recognition sensors. The Find X's 'stealth 3D camera' will rise up when the camera app is opened and retracts when it is closed. It features a whopping 25-megapixel front-facing camera and a dual 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel rear camera. As noted by CNET, the front-facing 3D face-scanner improves selfies and unlocks the phone. It is similar in design used by the Vivo Nex's pop-up selfie from Vivo, the sibling of Oppo and OnePlus, which are all owned by BKK Electronics. Oppo says the Find X facial recognition uses 3D structure light technology, which Apple used for the … [Read more...] about Oppo’s high-end Find X phone: Full screen, no notch but will you like pop-up camera?

And, now that Apple is playing around with microLED technology for use in the Apple Watch and maybe even more, we here at TechRadar decided it was about time we dove into this technology to see what’s going on. At this point, you might be wondering “what about OLED?” And, “I just sold my house to buy an OLED TV, will my wife/husband/significant other be mad at me?” Don’t worry – even if microLED is really cool, it doesn’t look like it’s going to replace OLED any time soon, as it’s still in the very early stages and nowhere near mass production. So, with all of the unfounded (at least for a while) fears out of the way, let’s dissect what exactly microLED is, what it’ll be used for, and whether or not it will one day replace OLED.What is … [Read more...] about MicroLED vs OLED: The battle of the high-end display tech
The world's largest phone maker is at the market share top for a reason. Ever since the first Galaxy S, it has been relentlessly pursuing things like unique OLED display panels, or innovative camera tech like Dual Pixel focusing as a market differentiator, culminating in the curved, bezel-less Infinity Display design of the Galaxy S9 or the excellent dual camera of the Galaxy S9+ that takes some of the best low-light pictures among its peers. A frequent critique towards Samsung is that it has diluted the brand with too many redundant offerings in all tiers of the market - from entry level devices, to the flagship S series. The company took notice, and trimmed its portfolio, leaving three recognizable lines as its main staples - the J, A, and S-series, with the Note line as a side show. That's still plenty of handsets to choose from, though, and that's why we are rounding up for you the best Samsung phones in each basic category.Best budget Samsung phonesSamsung Galaxy S7 ($350)The … [Read more...] about The best Samsung budget, midrange, and high end phones you can buy in 2018
