Future Group’s women employees writes to PM, seeks livelihood protection amid co’s tussle with Amazon

· March 8, 2021 ·

The Women of Big Bazaar SOS, the composite group of women who work for the Future Group, on Monday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought his support to protect their livelihoods as legal tussle between Amazon and Future Group continues. In a letter to the Prime Minister, the Women of Big Bazaar SOS group said: "Future Retail and Reliance had entered into an arrangement through which Future's retail stores will continue to be operated by Reliance. Reliance has also committed to clear all debts and dues owed by Future Retail to suppliers and vendors." "Since we had been facing tough times during the pandemic, this deal provided us with a lot of hope and confidence for our continued livelihoods. However, Amazon... has tried to stop this tie-up, and consequently our future and that of our families hangs precariously," it added. The group wrote to the Prime Minister on the occasion of International Women's Day, March 8. This sea slug cut off its own head—and lived to tell the tale

· March 8, 2021 ·

By David Shultz Mar. 8, 2021 , 11:10 AM It was “like a horror movie.” That’s how ecologist Sayaka Mitoh describes the scene at her lab at Nara Women’s University in Japan one day when she was studying sea slugs. One of the slimy aquatic critters had lost its body, and its head was crawling around the bottom of a tank. “We thought that it would die soon without a heart and other important organs,” she says. But it didn’t. Within days, the slug began to regenerate its entire body. By the end of the month, it was back to normal. The remarkable recovery, reported today in Current Biology , has been observed in simpler life forms such as hydra and flatworms—but it’s practically unheard of in complex animals like sea slugs. “It underscores the fact that still in the 21st century, we truly do not know what is possible in biology,” says Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, a molecular biologist at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. After her initial observation, Mitoh and her … [Read more...] about This sea slug cut off its own head—and lived to tell the tale

World’s oldest ‘pet cemetery’ discovered in ancient Egypt

· March 8, 2021 ·

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered the oldest pet cemetery on record — a nearly 2,000-year-old burial ground filled with well-loved animals, including the remains of cats and monkeys still wearing collars stringed with shell, glass and stone beads, a new study finds. Ancient Egyptians are known for mummifying countless animals to honor the gods , but this cemetery is different, said study lead researcher Marta Osypińska, a zooarchaeologist at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Unlike some mummified animals that were interred at other sites, sometimes through starvation or a snapped neck, none of the creatures in this cemetery — located on the outskirts of the Red Sea port of Berenice — showed signs that they had died at the hands of people. Instead, "we have old, sick and deformed animals that had to be fed and looked after by someone," Osypińska told Live Science in an email. "We have animals (almost all) that are very carefully buried. The animals are placed … [Read more...] about World’s oldest ‘pet cemetery’ discovered in ancient Egypt

Stem Cell Research Goes Beyond Biology

· May 19, 2008 ·

This Behind the Scenes article was provided to LiveScience in partnership with the National Science Foundation. Why is an engineer studying stem cells? This is a question I have routinely been asked during my first three and a half years as an assistant professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University. The answer: the field of stem cell research needs engineers to translate the potential of stem cells into regenerative therapies and novel diagnostic technologies for biological sensing and pharmaceutical screening. Today, donated organs and tissues are used to replace ailing or injured tissues, but the need for transplantable tissues and organs far exceeds the available supply. Stem cells, directed to differentiate into specific cell types, offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells to treat many chronic and degenerative diseases including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, spinal cord injury, … [Read more...] about Stem Cell Research Goes Beyond Biology
