As Joe Biden works to fix chips shortage, Intel promises help for automakers

· April 13, 2021 ·

U.S. President Joe Biden met with executives from major companies on Monday to discuss the global chip shortage that has hit automakers and spurred Intel Corp to announce it plans to make chips for car plants at its factories in the next six to nine months. During the meeting, Biden said he had bipartisan support for legislation to fund the semiconductor industry. He previously announced plans to invest $50 billion in semiconductor manufacturing and research as part of his drive to rebuild U.S. manufacturing under a $2 trillion infrastructure plan. The global chip shortage stems from a confluence of factors as carmakers, which shut plants during the COVID-19 pandemic last year, compete against the sprawling consumer electronics industry for chip supplies. That industry has seen a boom as people spend more time at home. Biden and his top advisers view the semiconductor shortage as a "top and immediate priority," the White House said after the meeting. Teens build Twitter bot to help COVID vaccine hopefuls snag appointments

· April 13, 2021 ·

For the most up-to-date news and information about the coronavirus pandemic, visit the WHO website . For plenty of people in the US, setting up a COVID-19 vaccine appointment has meant sitting in front of a computer, endlessly refreshing multiple browsers in hopes of snagging a rare open slot through their health provider or a nearby pharmacy. At times, getting a spot can seem like trying to win the lottery. (Actually, lottery odds might feel more favorable given limited vaccine supply and high demand .) Teenagers Sam Mendelson and Daniel Stoiber wanted to help their parents avoid the frustrating vaccine-chasing frenzy, so they got creative and ended up helping Mom and Dad, plus a lot more people. The friends built a Twitter bot, CovaxSF , that tracks vaccine availability by scanning California's MyTurn vaccine database and alerts followers when (and where) appointments in the San Francisco Bay Area open up. As of this writing, it has more than 2,200 followers. "The … [Read more...] about Teens build Twitter bot to help COVID vaccine hopefuls snag appointments

Should I buy a Sony projector?

· April 11, 2021 ·

So you’re considering a projector? Perhaps you’re a movie fan who wants to curate their own home cinema night, popcorn and all. Or you’re a gamer who wants to step out onto a distant planet and blast life-sized aliens to smithereens? With the right projector you can do all of these things, and so much more. If you are indeed ready to take the plunge, or are looking to upgrade, there are a few considerations to take into account. Projectors require a little more planning and setting up when compared with televisions. To get the best out of one, you’ll need to attach it to the ceiling, as – unlike TVs – you’ll need distance between the lens and the screen to project. (Unless of course, you go for a short throw model, but we’ll talk a little more on this later.) A ceiling-mounted beamer also eliminates the possibility of shadows cast by passing people or pets. Not all need to be ceiling mounted as smaller projectors can be moved in and out of a room as needed, but Sony’s range … [Read more...] about Should I buy a Sony projector?

Android 12 developer preview is available now with many under-the-hood updates

· February 18, 2021 ·

Google is releasing a developer preview for the next version of Android, Android 12, for Pixel devices today. As is the norm for Google, the very first previews of Android are full of a lot of developer-facing changes. Android 12 has updates to how the OS handles images, video, and future security updates. It’s also the norm for Google to hold some of the major UI changes in reserve for its Google I/O conference, typically held in May. Although this developer preview does include some changes to the UI for notifications, until we install it we won’t know how closely it will map to the leak we saw earlier this month . It’s available for Pixel 3 and newer phones but needs to be manually installed by flashing your device. It’s likely nowhere near ready for day-to-day use, but Google is promising that it will continue its beta program for regular users later this year. Although the point of this first preview is to give developers a jump-start on getting their apps ready for the … [Read more...] about Android 12 developer preview is available now with many under-the-hood updates
