Perspectives For months, I have had a bag of baby monitors under the cramped desk in the tiny room that serves as my office at the hospital where I work as a high-risk obstetrician. They are not special baby monitors; they are the same ones you could buy on Amazon or at CVS. They’re stacked alongside a plastic bin full of clogs and a box of unused printer paper—the kind of things you can’t quite throw out, because you might need them. … [Read more...] about A year into coronavirus, we’re still counting the dead

Memristor that forgets makes a good model neuron
The authors of the paper describing this device spend a lot of time arguing that this behavior specifically mimics how neurons handle the calcium they use to help trigger activity. That's probably overstating it, as neurons are quite a bit more complex than a single electronic device. Still, there's no question that this device acts a lot more like a neuron than most typical circuitry does. And the authors have managed to make them using a variety of materials, so it's apparently robust behavior. … [Read more...] about Memristor that forgets makes a good model neuron
GamerGate troll turns tail after receiving harassment of his own
He claimed that the harassment began after he posted his weirdest GamerGate-related video to date, in which Rankowski kicked and shouted—complete with racist epithets—at a Prius that had flipped over on a road. The video concluded with a text-loaded slideshow that alleged that game maker Brianna Wu, a frequent target of recent anonymous harassment, was somehow responsible for the car flipping over—and that she had done so to prevent Rankowski from driving to her house "to expose her as a corrupt gamer." The video went on to announce the beginning of an effort known as "Wu-pocalypse" to "discredit the [social justice warrior] people online." … [Read more...] about GamerGate troll turns tail after receiving harassment of his own
Peptide depots and DNA tattoos could deliver drugs in the future
The authors didn't test this technique with a vaccine, but they did show that cells of the skin take up DNA and express any proteins it encodes. So, the general principle seems to be sound. And, just like the POD developers, this paper's authors suggest that the material properties of the injection could be tuned to adjust the timing and strength of the DNA release. Plus, the polymers are stable for extended periods at room temperature. … [Read more...] about Peptide depots and DNA tattoos could deliver drugs in the future
Rogue CCTV technician spied on hundreds of customers during intimate moments
ADT notified its customers of the incident in April 2020.
