Melissa Nann Burke The Detroit News Published 5:08 PM EDT Mar 26, 2019 Washington — The U.S. Senate's vote to advance the ambitious Green New Deal failed as expected Tuesday, with most Democrats voting "present" in protest of what they've called a "sham" vote. Michigan Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, both Democrats, were among 43 senators voting present on the resolution, while 57 voted no. Neither Stabenow nor Peters have publicly endorsed the Green New Deal but both roundly criticized their Republican counterparts for supposedly failing to take climate change seriously or even acknowledge it's man-made. "I want real action on climate change. We all know this is a political game that Mitch McConnell is playing," Stabenow said of the Senate majority leader. "I'm going to vote present because it’s not something that we should be participating in one way or another. ... Climate change is not a game." … [Read more...] about Stabenow, Peters vote ‘present’ on Green New Deal resolution

GOP Sen. Kevin Cramer is leading a drive to reward 300,000 Indian visa workers for taking college graduate jobs from at least 200,000 young middle aged or older American graduates. Via Twitter, the North Dakota Senator is pushing the “Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act,” which was also championed by former GOP Rep. Kevin Yoder until he lost his 2018 election. The legislation “is about exactly that: fairness,” Cramer tweeted. “The long wait for these green cards is a disservice to legal immigrants and to the potential of the American economy. Let’s get this passed.” But Cramer’s bill does not offer fairness or safeguards to the many Americans who are losing careers or starter jobs to the imported army of roughly 500,000 Indian workers and recruiters, said Dawn Collins, a former vice-president at J.P. Morgan Chase bank. Casey and other American professionals were forced out of their software jobs in 2016 to make … [Read more...] about GOP Senators Push Green Card Rewards for Indian Visa Workers Who Take College Jobs in U.S.
Hundreds of young activists stormed Nancy Pelosi's office after Democrats won the House in November, inspired by the new hero of the left, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who briefly joined them in a livestreamed protest to demand passage of a radical plan to fight climate change. More than two months later, political reality is setting in. The so-called Green New Deal -- a loosely defined legislative wish list to slow global warming by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions -- may never make it to the House floor for a vote. While House Speaker Pelosi wants the chamber to take action on climate change, the progressive's blueprint lacks political support among moderate Democrats let alone Republicans.Pelosi has yet to throw her weight behind a Green New Deal, and when asked in an interview earlier this month if she'd be willing to take up elements of the plan, Pelosi dodged."It goes to the committees of jurisdiction," she said. "I want the entire Congress to take … [Read more...] about ‘Green New Deal’ tests Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s clout in Democratic House
Hundreds of American journalists, editors, computer experts, and videographers are being laid off from their jobs at HuffPost, Buzzfeed, Gannett, and Billboard Media, while those U.S. media jobs are being filled by cheap visa workers. In 2018, for example, U.S.-based companies asked for visas to import 138 editors, 88 producers, 221 writers, six publishers, and 347 graphic designers, according to the MyVisaJobs.com website.Companies are allowed to import H-1B visa workers without offering the jobs to Americans and are allowed to pay them far less than American graduates. Many of the visa workers are eager to work for very low wages because the American jobs get them out of their home countries and give them and their families a chance to win the hugely valuable prize of green cards. In 2017, companies asked for temporary visas to import 222 editors, 95 producers, 237 writers, ten publishers, and 556 graphic designers, mostly for jobs in New York and California, … [Read more...] about H-1B Visa Program Outsources Hundreds of Media Jobs Amid Massive U.S. Job Losses
It’s hard to recall a Washington idea that has rocketed to prominence as quickly as the “Green New Deal,“ rookie Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s radical proposal to decarbonize the American economy. House Democratic leaders have created a new select committee on climate change to pursue a Green New Deal. Democratic candidates for president are racing to endorse a Green New Deal. The details are still up in the air, but a massive climate investment is suddenly emerging as tentpole of Democratic politics. Although the idea sounds as radical and new as Ocasio-Cortez herself, it’s been done once before, and just a decade ago: President Barack Obama signed a prototype Green New Deal into law in February 2009, pouring an unprecedented $90 billion into clean electricity, renewable fuels, advanced batteries, energy efficiency, a smarter grid and a slew of other green initiatives.Story Continued Below If you haven’t heard of … [Read more...] about The Trouble With the ‘Green New Deal’
