Project Fi is now Google Fi, adds support for iPhones and many more Android phones
Google announced it has renamed Project Fi to Google Fi. Google also announced Google Fi support for many more phones, including iPhones and those from Samsung, LG, Motorola, and OnePlus. iPhone users can sign up through the new Google Fi app, which is currently in beta. Following rumors that Google would rename Project Fi into Google Fi, the search giant made it official today. Google also announced that Google Fi now supports many more smartphones, including those from Samsung, LG, Motorola, OnePlus, and Apple. You read that right. You can officially use your iPhone on Google Fi. You could technically get Project Fi to work on iPhones and other smartphones before today’s announcement. The problem was that you would not know if something was wrong until you tried. For example, we saw questionable call quality, slower speeds, and the lack of seamless carrier switching when we tested Google Fi on an iPhone 7 Plus. With today’s announcement, however, none of the … [Read more...] about Project Fi is now Google Fi, adds support for iPhones and many more Android phones
Decoding OtterBox and LifeProof cases for iPhone XS and XS Max
I am a freak when it comes to cases for smartphones. If I see a family member or a friend running around with an unprotected device, my first instinct, after recovering from a panic attack, is to fit that person's device with a case. I usually have a few models sitting in my "case box," and if the case fits, it's going on the phone if you show up at my house without one. Also: iPhone XS Max first impressions: It's big, but not too big I used to say that any case on a smartphone is better than no case at all. The main thing you really need to be concerned with is bezel elevation to prevent the phone from falling flat on the screen and taking a direct impact. Secondary to that concern, you want edge rigidity and shock absorption to buffer against hits on the side and corners. Prior to the introduction of edge screen designs first seen in devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, followed by last year's iPhone X and this year's XS and XS Max, I would have … [Read more...] about Decoding OtterBox and LifeProof cases for iPhone XS and XS Max
The first cross-platform AR app for iPhone and Android just launched
Google has been talking about ARCore on Android for a while now. Apple's been championing ARKit for iPhone for about as long. Today, the first cross-platform ARKit/ARCore app has launched on both app stores respectively. It's called Just a Line and you and your friends can make drawings in the air, and even draw on top of each other's art, using augmented reality. It's just a simple app. One person draws in the air using their phone. Another person draws in the air using their phone. Both air drawings show up on both phones, in real time. You can also record video of your AR doodles to share on your sosh meeds. It uses Google's Cloud Anchor system, which allows one person to "host" and AR session that others can join. The information is sent to Google's cloud servers and directed back to each device, which makes it possible to play games and share experiences on Android and iOS devices. This is just the first of what's sure to be a lot of cross-platform apps and games that will make … [Read more...] about The first cross-platform AR app for iPhone and Android just launched
[Bear With Us] Google Releases ‘Gboard’ For iPhone With Search Built-Into Keyboard
Hey, Google just released a new app. This is usually the sort of thing you, as Android users, are interested in. This time is a little different, though. Google has released Gboard, a keyboard for iPhone with built-in search. Why are we talking about an iPhone app? Because you can bet something similar will come to Android soon enough. Google has put together a demo video of Gboard in the same style it used recently for Tap to Translate and Google Now on Tap. Just hit that Google button, and you (not technically you, but an iPhone user) can do a search and see results right there in the keyboard. It saves you from needing to hop into a different app just to search for something. It can pull up images, addresses, and anything else that you can find through Google. A Googler has noted that it is working on the best way to bring the same functionality to Android. We did just get a huge Google Keyboard update, so maybe that was laying the groundwork.
