Music streaming services have really picked up lately. The convenience of being able to listen to absolutely any song no matter where you are is definitely worth the $10-ish per month. Even devout audiophiles can get lossless quality if they pay for a $20 per-month Tidal subscription, and keeping a bunch of mp3s stored on your phone seems to be a thing of the past. But is it really? We thought we'd ask you, our smartphone-savvy readers, whether you make use of such services. A couple of years ago, 36% of people who voted on a similar poll said they don't use such services. Has that trend changed? Let's see! Phonearena polls sort by What is your music-streaming service of choice? Crafting a playlist used to require High Fidelity-levels of thought. Not anymore, thanks to the likes of Spotify and Songza, which let you play tunes based on your mood or activity. But if you’re planning a dinner party, you still have to come up with a menu, even if these services have your musical accompaniment covered, right? Not anymore, apparently. Google Play Music and Munchery teamed up to pair music and meals. The meal-delivery service’s chefs have created custom dinners based on Google Play Music’s radio stations. It’s not just dinners, though. The playlists were created around different moods, times of day, and activities. “Coffee Shop Indie Radio” apparently goes best with “sinful chocolate cake.”When you click on your city’s menu offerings, some will have a “Google Play” tag. Today in Seattle, for example, you can order five-spice petit poulet for two; the description of the $18 meal (“A chicken partially … [Read more...] about Dine and dance: Munchery and Google Play pair meals and music
When it comes to figuring out a way to stream your favorite artists and albums, there’s no shortage of options from which to choose. Apple offers Apple Music. Amazon has Prime Music. And if those don’t suit your fancy, there’s Spotify, and Pandora, and Tidal. And those only scratch the surface. Collectively, subscription streaming services made $1.6 billion this year, and are poised to boost music retail sales for the second straight year. It’s no surprise, then, that Google, which launched the eponymous Google Play Music service in 2011, is in it for the long haul. The Mountain View, California-based company conveyed as much on Monday with the launch of a redesigned Google Play Music for iOS and Android. It’s colorful, responsive, and a lot more intuitive than the outgoing version, but also imbued with predictive smarts: the ability to serve up songs, albums, and playlists appropriate for a context. It does so by leveraging … [Read more...] about Google Play Music offers personalized playlists based on location, weather
In a strange offering, you can now listen to locally curated music stations from Google Play Music — on TripAdvisor. It’s an unusual way to gain subscribers, and that’s really what’s at the heart of this collaboration, which has Google offering two free months of subscription to its music streaming service.“Starting today, with the TripAdvisor Android app, you can access a wide array of well-known and hidden-gem soundtracks for popular cities to listen to whether you’re in travel-planning mode or on a road trip exploring the globe,” Brandon Bilinski, product manager for Google Play Music, writes in a blog post.It works like this: If you’re planning a trip via TripAdvisor, or are en route to or in a city for a vacation, Google will offer up some classic tunes to set you in the right mood and get you excited. It all happens in TripAdvisor’s Android app, but when you click on a a station, you’ll be redirected to … [Read more...] about Planning a vacation? Songza and Google joined forces not that long ago after the search giant bought the company for an undisclosed amount. Google Play Music incorporated some of the best aspects of Songza into its music-streaming subscription service. Those who pay to listen to music from Google’s service will now have access to the smart, customized listening suggestions.Google completely redesigned the “Listen Now” tab in Play Music in the style of Material Design for Android 5.0 Lollipop. Songza’s Concierge, which suggests tracks based on your listening preferences, your location, and the time of day, is now baked into the Play Music app. As soon as you open up the “Listen Now” tab, you’ll be greeted by personalized suggestions of mixes you might want to listen to at that specific moment. So if it’s Sunday morning, you might be greeted by lazy, relaxing songs, but if you’re about to go for your daily afternoon run, Google will suggest your workout … [Read more...] about Thanks to Songza, Google Play Music now tells you what you want to hear
Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are finally available and, as usual, you can expect to find a good number of Samsung apps pre-installed. Like last year with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, though, you’ll find no Samsung Music app — that honor goes to Google Play Music, thanks to a partnership agreement between the two companies.Google Play Music is a streaming service like Spotify and Apple Music, and while there is a free version, a subscription will get you full access to more than 40 million songs. Going forward, Google and Samsung said that Play Music will be the default music player and streaming service on all new Samsung phones and tablets. That’s huge news for Google — Samsung is the largest Android smartphone maker, and this partnership could give a big boost to subscriber numbers.Owners of new Samsung devices will get some extra perks: The free music upload limit has been upped to 100,000, rather than the 50,000 songs a regular … [Read more...] about Google Play Music is now the default music service on new Samsung phones, tablets
Updated on 4-01-2016: The Life of Pablo is now available on Apple Music, Spotify, and Google Play Music as well as for purchase on the musician’s own website. It remains unclear whether or not it will get a physical release. It’s been a rocky road for those looking to get down with Kanye West’s recently-released album, The Life of Pablo. An ongoing release cycle for his latest record has stymied many would-be listeners by exclusively streaming on Tidal, though the young streamer from Jay Z is still reporting absolutely massive streaming numbers for it.But the wait may soon be over for those with Apple Music, Spotify, Rhapsody, or other streaming subscriptions; despite Kanye’s assertion that his album would “never never never be on Apple,” The Life of Pablo may be coming to the Cupertino brand and all major on-demand streaming services as soon as this Friday, according to a recent report from … [Read more...] about Kanye’s The Life of Pablo LP hits Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Play (Update)
It’s been one year since Google introduced its jack-of-all-trades dongle to the world, and the search giant is celebrating by gifting anyone who purchases a Chromecast within the next two months 90 free days of Google’s All Access service for Google Play Music. In its celebratory press release, Google also gave itself a few pats on the back for Chromecasts success, detailing that, since launching the HDMI-based streaming device, “people have hit the cast button more than 400 million times to enjoy their favorite sports, music, premium movies and TV shows.”Google ran a similar promotion with the Chromecast’s initial release a year ago when it offered a free three-month subscription to Netflix with each purchase of the $35 device. Demand was so high that Google had to cancel the deal just two days after announcing it. This deal, in a roundabout way, essentially drops the … [Read more...] about Chromecast celebrates first birthday with three-month Google Play giveaway
At its Nexus event in San Francisco last September, Google announced a new family plan for its Google Play Music service. The new service, in many ways similar to Apple Music’s family plan, will support up to 6 devices for $15, and will go live this week. As a bonus, the plan will also grant subscribers free access to the YouTube Red subscription service as well as YouTube’s recently-launched YouTube music app.The presentation announcing the new plan was a bit awkward, but the anecdote rings true for families everywhere. When one music account is shared with others, there are bound to be problems. For instance, Spotify users with kids have no doubt been in the middle of enjoying their music when it is suddenly clipped off as one of their children hijacks the stream. And Spotfiy’s Discover feature is useless if more than one person listens on the account, as tastes in music are bound to be disparate between adults and their kids. No doubt, plenty of … [Read more...] about Google Play Music family plan goes live with YouTube Red, YouTube Music access for $15
