The repository filing mentions HAL V_1_2, a new version of the Hardware Abstraction Layer meant to connect the Android framework to any particular hardware, with the author of the commit explicitly stating the technology “only supports [the] Pixel 3.” The revised HAL platform will serve as a basis for a new “Auto Selection Network UI” functionality which also won’t be available on previous Pixel-series devices, another commit suggests. Verizon Wireless is getting ready to kick off a promotion aimed at users planning to buy a new Google Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL smartphone. Starting April 5 (this Thursday), customers who trade in an old smartphone can get up to 50% off a Google Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL, in addition to 2 free months of YouTube TV, a Google Chromecast ($35 value), and a Google Home Mini ($49 value). The trade in credit's value obviously depends on the phone model you're willing to trade in. Credit (up to $424.99) will be applied to your account over 24 months. It looks like the deal will be available to both new and existing Verizon customers. As you may know, Verizon already had various trade in deals involving other high-end smartphones, including the Apple iPhone X and iPhone 8 series, or Samsung's Galaxy S9 and S9+. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are finally here, and there's a lot to unpack. While these devices resemble the original Pixel and Pixel XL, there are many changes both internally and externally that make them worth talking about. Let's dive in.
