Google Maps ’ Street View is celebrating its 15th anniversary and on the occasion, Google has introduced two new upgrades, one of which is the arrival of the Street View imagery on Android and iOS apps. Until now, only the desktop version of Google Maps allowed users to view Street View imagery and see how a place has changed over the years. Now, with the update, users would be able to experience the same on their smartphone via the Android and iOS apps of the service. To see how the feature update works, you have to open the Street View mode and tap anywhere on the screen. Now, choose the ‘See more dates’ option which will open the location’s historical imagery and as per Google’s claims, the imagery going back to even 2007 will be shown for select places, letting users see how a place has changed over time. Google is officially leaving Russia
Audio player loading… Google is officially done with Russia, after the government seized its local bank accounts and made continuing operations there impossible. “The Russian authorities’ seizure of Google Russia’s bank account has made it untenable for our Russia office to function, including employing and paying Russia-based employees, paying suppliers and vendors, and meeting other financial obligations,” Google said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal . Most of Google's employees in Russia have already left the country, following its invasion of Ukraine, and will continue to work from elsewhere. Sources told the WSJ that many will work from Dubai, where Google has a large office. A Russian court froze Google's bank account in March, which spurred the company to begin planning an official – and final – exit. A bailiff for the court transferred the funds out of the bank account, meaning Google can no longer pay staff and suppliers. It is unclear clear … [Read more...] about Google is officially leaving Russia
Here’s How to Get Google Assistant on the Galaxy Watch 4
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 is one of the best smartwatches around, but unlike every other Wear OS device, it didn’t have Google Assistant. Now that has finally changed. Samsung revealed earlier this week that Google Assistant was finally rolling out to the Galaxy Watch 4, which has only had Samsung’s Bixby virtual assistant since the watch was released last year. The good news is that it’s showing up on watches automatically without the need to do anything — in my case, the Assistant icon appeared at the bottom of my watch’s app list, and tapping it started the setup process. If you don’t see Google Assistant yet, Droid Life pointed out you can force the installation by opening the Play Store app listing for “Google Assistant for wearables,” and then choosing your watch as the target device. Much easier than the process for installing Google Assistant on Samsung’s older Tizen-powered Galaxy Watches , which was also an unofficial version. By default, holding down the home … [Read more...] about Here’s How to Get Google Assistant on the Galaxy Watch 4

Google brings Street View history to phones, introduces “Street View Studio”
Today is the 15th birthday of Google Maps Street View, Google's project to take ground-level, 360-degree photographs of the entire world. To celebrate, the company is rolling out a few new features. First up, Google is bringing historical Street View data to iOS and Android phones. The feature has long existed on desktop browsers, where you can click into Street View mode and then time travel through Google's image archives. When you tap on a place to see Street View imagery, a "see more dates" button will appear next to the current age of the photo, letting you browse all the photos for that area going back to 2007. Google says the feature will release "starting today on Android and iOS globally," though, like all Google product launches, it will take some time to fully roll out. Google Now introduces a few new contextually aware features
Google Now has undoubtedly become one of Android's most popular features, and the company continues to add improvements to Cards to make its contextual application increasingly capable. Today, Google introduced more new features for Google Now, including a live TV feature and Google Offers. Google detailed the new Cards in a blog post on Android's Google Plus page today. TV Cards, as they're called, work with Internet-connected televisions to help bring up more information about what's on-screen. Users must connect their Android device to the same network the television is connected to and then tap the "Listen for a TV Show" Card in the Google Now application to look up more information. This feature will display items like show factoids and a profile of the actors in the cast. For the thrifty, the Google Offers Card will help you keep track of your saved offers. When you're near a store you've clipped an offer for, this Card will send you a notification about the nearby savings. … [Read more...] about Google Now introduces a few new contextually aware features
Time travel is just a click away: Google opens up Street View archives
Google's Street View cars buzz up and down the world's roadways rather frequently. Usually, when Google gets new data from its road-going cameras, it takes the old imagery down. There is value in those old Street View images, though, and today, Google announced it will be putting them all online for virtual explorers to dig through. The feature hasn't rolled out to many accounts yet, but it looks like a small, draggable window will be added to the Street View interface. Just move the time slider around and you'll be able to jump through past images. Granted, Street View has only been around for a few years, so the archives only go back to 2007. A few of the events Google suggests browsing through are the building of One World Trade Center and the destruction and rebuilding of Onagawa, Japan after the 2011 earthquake. Besides being really cool, the move will save Google from having to choose a canonical Street View image for every location. If the current image is blacked-out or … [Read more...] about Time travel is just a click away: Google opens up Street View archives
Hands on: Google Earth 5.0 goes under the sea, back in time
Google announced a new version of Google Earth today with features that focus on what is under our ocean, in our past, and above our heads. Ars Technica did some vicarious adventuring to check out the new features. Google Earth 5.0 (beta) is available for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux users, though we should note that Google has become even more aggressive with the installation of its software update mechanism. Instead of covertly installing the software like it has in the past or offering the option to disable said updater like it should, Google now presents a dialog that forces the user to agree to the software license and installation of a phantom software update tool that cannot be uninstalled if the user wants to run Google Earth. But let's not dwell on the negatives, because there is a lot to love about this new version. Look under Initial gripes aside, Google Earth 5.0 exhibits yet more UI refinements and polish that bring it more in line with Google's other desktop … [Read more...] about Hands on: Google Earth 5.0 goes under the sea, back in time
