If you see an incredible image of deep space, chances are it came from Hubble. Launched in 1990, Hubble is a telescope that orbits above Earth's atmosphere, beaming home images that have helped us solve some of the universe's greatest mysteries. Not only does NASA count Hubble as one of its most successful science missions, but it is also among the biggest advancements humans have ever made in space. The Tech That Powers Hubble Hubble orbits around Earth at about five miles per second; a complete spin takes 97 minutes. On its journey, its mirror captures light and directs it into its instruments, which then work together to provide the observation. While Hubble provides views of deep space, it doesn't magnify distant stars, alien planets and galaxies. Instead, it collects more light than the human eye can see on its own. With a telescope, the bigger the mirror, the better the vision. Hubble's mirror is 94.5 inches in diameter, which is smaller than most Earth-based telescopes. … [Read more...] about How Hubble Snaps Those Amazing Space Images

Microsoft failed to shore up defenses that could have limited SolarWinds hack: US senator
Microsoft Corp's failure to fix known problems with its cloud software facilitated the massive SolarWinds hack that compromised at least nine federal government agencies, according to security experts and the office of U.S. Senator Ron Wyden. A vulnerability first publicly revealed by researchers in 2017 allows hackers to fake the identity of authorized employees to gain access to customers' cloud services. The technique was one of many used in the SolarWinds hack. Wyden, who has faulted tech companies on security and privacy issues as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, blasted Microsoft for not doing more to prevent forged identities or warn customers about it. "The federal government spends billions on Microsoft software," Wyden told Reuters ahead of a SolarWinds hearing on Friday in the House of Representatives. "It should be cautious about spending any more before we find out why the company didn't warn the government about the hacking technique that the … [Read more...] about Microsoft failed to shore up defenses that could have limited SolarWinds hack: US senator
Overgrown sheep ‘Baarack’ gets epic quarantine haircut, loses 78 lbs. of matted wool
Months of social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19 have kept many people from getting regular haircuts. But even the most overgrown stay-at-home hair can't compare with the plight of a merino sheep in Australia wearing a whopping 78 lbs. (35 kilograms) of overgrown, matted fleece. Domesticated sheep usually undergo annual shearings to keep their coats in check. However, this particular ram, nicknamed Baarack, was roaming wild in a state forest in Victoria, Australia. He hadn't been shorn in years, and his fleece had grown into a dense, gargantuan mass by the time he was captured and brought to Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary for rescued farm animals in Lancefield, Victoria, a representative of the nonprofit told Live Science in an email. There, Baarack was finally shorn of his heavy, woolly burden, which weighed about as much as a 10-year-old child. Under the pounds of matted wool — stained with dirt, studded with twigs and crawling with insects — "was not Australia's … [Read more...] about Overgrown sheep ‘Baarack’ gets epic quarantine haircut, loses 78 lbs. of matted wool
Reminders to stay cautious aren’t the biggest reasons for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy
Esther Cohen is 91, vaccinated against COVID-19, and wants to play mahjong with her friends — who are also vaccinated. She asked Anthony Fauci if they could get back to their games after he spoke at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting this month. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said she should wait a bit longer and urged her to be patient. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was working on guidelines for people who’d been vaccinated because lots of people were asking the same question, he said — why get vaccinated if you can’t get back to normal? Epidemiologists say the 44 million people in the United States with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine should keep wearing masks and keep their distance from others, at least for now. Some experts are worried that type of messaging is too pessimistic and undersells the vaccines . They think it could make people less interested in … [Read more...] about Reminders to stay cautious aren’t the biggest reasons for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy
In the Drink of an AI: Startup Opseyes Instantly Analyzes Wastewater
Let’s be blunt. Potentially toxic waste is just about the last thing you want to get in the mail. And that’s just one of the opportunities for AI to make the business of analyzing wastewater better. It’s an industry that goes far beyond just making sure water coming from traditional sewage plants is clean. Just about every industry on earth — from computer chips to potato chips — relies on putting water to work, which means we’re all, literally, swimming in the stuff. Just What the Doctor Ordered That started to change, however, thanks to a conversation Opseyes founder Bryan Arndt, then a managing consultant with Denmark-based architecture and engineering firm Ramboll, had with his brother, a radiologist. Arndt was intrigued when his brother described how deep learning was being set loose on medical images. Arndt quickly realized that the same technology — deep learning — that helps radiologists analyze images of the human body faster and more accurately could … [Read more...] about In the Drink of an AI: Startup Opseyes Instantly Analyzes Wastewater
