Volkswagen plans to use 3D printers to mass produce some auto parts. The German carmaker says it will use HP metal printing technology for components like gear knobs and possibly custom tailgate lettering.A Volkswagen official says 3D printers likely won't produce an entire vehicle any time soon, but the number of parts made with the technology should significantly increase over time. The company says it plans to use 3D printing for mass production of structural parts within two or three years. The left uses words like “untraceable” and “undetectable” in describing 3D-printed guns while avoiding questions of practicality and safety. Some of this avoidance could be unintentional but some is no-doubt due to the fact that the establishment media has represented 3D-printed guns in a way that is misleading but beneficial to those seeking to ban the weapons. In its purest form a 3D-printed gun is a gun printed out of plastic on a special printer. Even though plastic, the gun is not “undetectable” inasmuch as it has a metal firing pin and other metal parts. However, is the gun safe? According to CNN, individuals testing such guns in Europe have concluded they could be more harmful to the shooter than to the intended target. German police tested such a gun and concluded it “could endanger the shooter as much as anyone else.” This is commonsense for those who understand firearms, who understand the pressures associated with a … [Read more...] about Fact vs. Fiction: Are 3D-Printed Guns Safe?
Audi has adopted Stratasys 3D printing methods in a plot to drastically reduce the time required for prototyping. On Thursday, the German automaker said that the new Stratasys J750, a commercial 3D printer, will be utilized in the manufacture of tail light covers in automobiles. The Stratasys J750's lure lies within the 3D printing system's color capabilities. 3D printing is fast becoming a commonplace technique in manufacturing to reduce prototyping times and to improve testing and efficiency, but color mapping is an area in which 3D printers are yet to fully conquer. However, Stratasys says that the new 3D printer is able not only to color and texture map but also create gradients -- of which, can be used in modern vehicle designs and elements that must allow light to pass through. The printer is also able to work with different materials, such as various plastics.Audi says that this technology will be put to work in the firm's Pre-Series Center in Ingolstadt, Germany. The automaker … [Read more...] about Audi signs up Stratasys to slash prototype times with color 3D printing
The hold includes freeze-dried meals, 20 live lab mice, 30 fruit flies and a zero-G 3D printer. Gerst operated the Canadarm2, the 17.6 metre robotic arm, to capture the Dragon and bring it closer. NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman assisted him. The operation to latch the vessel to the research outpost took about two hours. The Dragon carried more than 2,200 kilogrammes of supplies and material for science experiments, including a tool to measure wind speed at the ocean's surface. Looking forward to catching a #Dragon today with my own hands! #SpaceX4 — Alexander Gerst (@Astro_Alex) September 23, 2014 The 3D printer is the first of its kind. Developed by US company, the ISS-bound version meets NASA's safety standards and is built to withstand the stresses of launch. This one is a technology demonstrator. A more industrial one is planned for next year. It is hoped that one day, the astronauts aboard the ISS can print their own tools as needed, even without gravity to … [Read more...] about Gerst and crew get 3D printer and some mice
After announcing its first revenue from sales, HP Inc. today said it is now focused on scaling up its Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing business that it believes will rival standard manufacturing technologies, such as injection molding. While HP is planning some direct sales of its new Jet Fusion printer lineup, the vast majority of the machines will be sold through about 30 resellers in North America and Europe, where the company is focusing its attention. What's interesting "is 80% of these channel partners are new for HP," Steven Nigro, president of HP's 3D Printing business, said during a press and analyst briefing on Friday.HP also has more than a dozen 3D Printing Reference and Experience centers throughout the U.S. and Europe where potential customers can test the industrial 3D printing product. HP made the announced today at the RAPID 2017 additive manufacturing conference in Pittsburgh.HP claims its Multi Jet Fusion 3D printers will enable mass production of parts through additive … [Read more...] about HP to scale up its 3D printer business for use in mass manufacturing
