Apple and Amazon added about $175 billion to their combined market value after upbeat results boosted investor confidence on the ability of these firms to weather a slowdown in the economy. While analysts noted these companies were not completely immune to broader economic hurdles, they said the weakness in consumer spending is not likely to send these firms into the red, deeming them "always reliable to buck the trend." , Amazon's shares rose about 11 percent to $135.50 after the e-commerce titan forecast upbeat third-quarter revenue, while those of Apple rose more than 3 percent as the company said appetite for iPhones remained strong despite consumers' tightening spending. "The results are good enough to support Apple's stock, which has done much better in the current market rout, further justifying the company's "safe haven" status when the going gets tough," Haris Anwar , Investing.com analyst, said. Instagram is about to get photos all wrong (again)
Audio player loading… Instagram's obsession with TikTok has reached crisis levels. It's so bad that it no longer understands its own product. Case in point: a new plan to introduce 9:16 aspect ratio photos as an option (I pray not the default) in your feed. Instagram CEO Adam Moserri revealed the new photo format plan during a recent Ask Me Anything Session (as spotted by The Verge (opens in new tab) ). Mosseri explained that currently, as you are by no doubt painfully aware, you can have vertical videos in your feed (it often seems like we have nothing but these) "but you cannot have tall photos on Instagram. So, we thought maybe we should make sure that we treat both equally.” I already hate all the vertical video Reels in my Instagram feed, not only because they nudge aside virtually all the photos I really want to see, but also because, thanks, to Instagram's dumb design, I can't see the entire video unless I tap on it. At that point, I'm inside an interface that is … [Read more...] about Instagram is about to get photos all wrong (again)
Linaro group advances Linux on ARM with 10.11 release
Linaro, a nonprofit organization that aims to accelerate embedded Linux development for the ARM architecture, has announced its first software release. Version 10.11 of the group's software stack quietly debuted this week. The group appears to be attracting interest and making steady progress. Founded earlier this year by a coalition of ARM technology vendors, Linaro is not quite like other mobile Linux consortia. Rather than producing its own platform, the group wisely decided to focus on upstream work that will benefit existing mobile middleware projects. LInaro's efforts so far have primarily revolved around hardware enablement in the kernel and improving development tools. The group's work will eventually reduce the time that it takes for companies to bring ARM-powered products to market with Linux. The 10.11 release supports several hardware environments, including the Beagle Board and ARM Versatile Express boards. It also comes in several different flavors tailored for … [Read more...] about Linaro group advances Linux on ARM with 10.11 release
BT and Nokia achieve European first carrier aggregation on 5G SA
Audio player loading… BT has become the first European mobile operator to successfully combine four channels of spectrum (opens in new tab) on a live 5G standalone (SA) network in a development that will help fulfil the speed and capacity promises of next-generation mobile services. Carrier aggregation fuses separate spectrum bands together to harness the advantages of each. For example, marrying the coverage and indoor propagation rates of low-band frequencies with the high capacity and data rates of mid and high band airwaves. In addition to the performance gains, operators can use their existing spectrum assets to reduce the cost of network deployment. 5G SA carrier aggregation Working with Nokia, BT combined EE’s commercial 2.1 GHz, 2.6GHz, 3.4GHz and 3.6GHz frequencies on a radio mast at its Adastral Park research facility in Suffolk. This is the first time four channel components (4CC) have been combined outside a lab setting in Europe. … [Read more...] about BT and Nokia achieve European first carrier aggregation on 5G SA
Twilio suffers data breach after its employees were targeted by a phishing campaign
Digital communication platform Twilio was hacked after a phishing campaign tricked its employees into revealing their login credentials ( via TechCrunch ). The company disclosed the data breach in a post on its blog , noting that only “a limited number” of customer accounts were affected by the attack. Twilio allows web services to send SMS messages and place voice calls over telephone networks and is used by companies including Uber, Twitter, and Airbnb. The hack occurred on August 4th and involved a bad actor sending SMS messages to Twilio employees that asked them to reset their password or alerted them to a change in their schedule. Each message included a link with keywords, like “Twilio,” “SSO” (single sign-on), and “Okta,” the name of the user authentication service used by many companies. The link directed employees to a page that mimicked a real Twilio sign-in page, allowing hackers to collect the information employees inputted there. After it became aware of the … [Read more...] about Twilio suffers data breach after its employees were targeted by a phishing campaign
Crypto-driven GPU crash makes Nvidia miss Q2 projections by $1.4 billion
Further Reading Intel’s loss is AMD’s gain as EPYC server CPUs benefit from Intel’s delays Nvidia doesn't officially announce its second-quarter financial results until the end of the month, but the company is trying to soften the blow by announcing preliminary results today . And as with so many other tech companies in the last month, the results are mixed at best. With $6.7 billion in revenue, Nvidia managed to eke out year-over-year growth, but the results are still bad news because that number is down from a previously forecasted $8.1 billion, a miss of $1.4 billion. Nvidia blamed this shortfall on weaker-than-expected demand for its gaming products, including its GeForce graphics processors. Nvidia pointed to "a reduction in channel partner sales," meaning that partners like Evga, MSI, Asus, Zotac, Gigabyte, and others were selling fewer new GPUs than anticipated. This drop can be attributed partly to a crash in the value of mining-based cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin … [Read more...] about Crypto-driven GPU crash makes Nvidia miss Q2 projections by $1.4 billion
