Microsoft’s Japanese division found that reducing its working week to four days throughout the month of August caused an increase in productivity and a decrease in costs. Sales per employee rose by 40 percent compared to the same period in the previous year as a result of the company’s “Work-Life Choice Challenge Summer 2019,” reports Bloomberg. Microsoft is not the only organization to explore the idea of a shorter working week. In New Zealand, one trust management company trialed a four-day working week over two months last year and found staff focus improved and stress decreased. In the UK, one London-based science research foundation explored plans to give workers Fridays off without any pay penalty, but scrapped the idea due to its complexity. A four-day working week was also the focus of a recent study commissioned by the UK’s Labour party. The Microsoft trial is especially interesting in the context of Japan’s notoriously long work hours, says … [Read more...] about Microsoft Japan’s four-day working week trial led to productivity improvements

120 Million People Spend 3 Hours A Week On Imgur. You’ll Get Addicted Too
Imgur is the most popular startup no one talks about. The image sharing and upvoting site has a stunning 150 million monthly users that view 60 billion memes, Cat GIFS, sob stories, and science explainers per month. But considering 82% of them spend over 3 hours per week on Imgur, and 17% spend over 10 hours, you could definitely consider Imgur addictive. Item tracking startup Adero is laying off 45% of staff, just weeks after it pivoted
Pivots can be the making of a startup, helping teams refocus on a good idea when previous things haven’t worked. But sometimes, they are just one more step on a difficult track. TechCrunch has learned and confirmed that Adero — an Amazon-backed maker of Bluetooth-enabled tracking tags that until last December was known as TrackR — is laying off at least 45 percent of its staff. The cuts come as Adero refocuses on building software instead of hardware products, and attempts to build a B2B business that reduces its emphasis on the consumer market ahead of plans to raise another round of funding. The layoffs, which started last week, follow a pivot about two months ago from selling individual tracking tags — a business that had become increasingly commoditized — to developing solutions to organise and track groups of items that tend to be used together (such as the contents of a school backpack). It’s not clear exactly how many … [Read more...] about Item tracking startup Adero is laying off 45% of staff, just weeks after it pivoted
Pewdiepie starts crowdsourced channel on Twitch with new weekly show
Since the "feud" between Pewdiepie and mainstream media popped up in February, YouTube's biggest star hasn't stirred up much controversy. Now, Pewdiepie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, is taking his newest online video endeavor to another outlet: Twitch. He announced at the end of a recent video that he started a Twitch channel called Netglow and will produce a weekly live show entitled Best Club every Sunday at 11am EST. The first episode aired this past weekend. According to Pewdiepie, Netglow has been in the works since before the controversy over his anti-Semitic jokes. "I decided this before, before anything, so don't read it the wrong way," he said. "But I wanted to start doing streams on Twitch." Netlgow was his original name idea for Revelmode, the digital network he helped create with Disney's Maker Studios. Disney cut ties with Pewdiepie after The Wall Street Journal reported on his offensive jokes. Google also responded to those reports by … [Read more...] about Pewdiepie starts crowdsourced channel on Twitch with new weekly show
