Menulog moves to give couriers access to fair pay and job entitlements

· April 13, 2021 ·

Food delivery company Menulog has announced it plans to give its couriers access to insurance cover, fair pay, leave entitlements, and superannuation. The program is part of the company's plans to shift all its food couriers in Australia from working under a contractor model to an employment model. The company has dubbed this shift as a move to "enhance the life standards of couriers". "Historically, the contractor model was well suited for the Australian market, but as the gig economy continues to evolve, we believe we need to make improvements for couriers that align with our philosophies and values and those of our new European parent group, Just Eat Takeaway.com," Menulog managing director Morten Belling said. "We are committed to the safety of our couriers, providing them with insurance cover and a fair income. While we are compliant with local laws, we believe there is more we can do for couriers, to better meet our evolved values and moral standards. "We owe it to our … [Read more...] about Menulog moves to give couriers access to fair pay and job entitlements

Facebook denies bullying Australia as it plans to launch news service by year-end

· April 13, 2021 ·

Facebook has told a Senate committee its focus in Australia is now on concluding deals with local news outlets and launching initiatives to support smaller, more regional publishers following the passage of the News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code. "We certainly understand that it's a clear signal from the government and the Parliament that there is a strong desire for digital platforms such as ours to invest in the market," Facebook's director of policy for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands Mia Garlick said. "We have been doing that for a number of years, and that's what we're very much focused on right now. We have two goals at present: One is to conclude deals that will allow us to bring Facebook News to Australia in the latter half of this year, and the second is to make sure that we are launching initiatives that can support smaller regional and public interest publishers." Locally, Facebook has concluded either letters of intent or … [Read more...] about Facebook denies bullying Australia as it plans to launch news service by year-end

The era of reusability

· April 13, 2021 ·

A large, passenger van-sized spacecraft sidled up to an active, 6-ton satellite on Monday afternoon about 36,000 km above the Earth's surface. Slowly, ever so slowly, the distance between the two vehicles closed. There was nothing wrong with the satellite, which is 17 years old and owned by Intelsat. All the while on Wednesday, it continued actively delivering broadband and other media services across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. But it was running desperately low on fuel to maintain its position, and Intelsat would have soon had to send the vehicle to a "graveyard" orbit. And so Intelsat contracted with Northrop Grumman to test its new life extension services. That led to the launch of Northrop's "Mission Extension Vehicle-2" last year, which used fuel-sipping electric propulsion to approach the orbit of Intelsat 10-02 and dock with the active satellite on Wednesday. As a result of this pairing, the satellite will now live on for five more years. Jean-Luc Froeliger, vice … [Read more...] about The era of reusability

NDIS gets a government app with blockchain but no ethics

· April 13, 2021 ·

Good news, disabled Australians! You'll soon be getting an app that will implement a welfare compliance regime designed by the people who brought you robo-debt. But don't worry, it'll have blockchain. No, this isn't good news at all. What makes it worse is that it's clear the government wants to extend technology-driven compliance to all Australians, with an emphasis on cracking down on your mistakes, not theirs. Kathryn Campbell, Secretary of the Department of Social Services, says the long-term plan is to have one app for all Commonwealth government services. "One to rule the world," she said last month, apparently oblivious to how evil that sounds. Senators are already worried that the disability app, intended to be used by participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to claim expenses against their support plan, will go the way of COVIDSafe : Millions of dollars spent on technology that doesn't really do the job. The intention was to fix a poor web … [Read more...] about NDIS gets a government app with blockchain but no ethics
