Further Reading Red Hat withdraws from the Free Software Foundation after Stallman’s return The Free Software Foundation's board of directors issued a statement today regarding the controversial return of Richard M. Stallman (RMS) to its ranks, alongside a statement of Stallman's own. The controversy in brief RMS has never been known for personal tact or diplomacy, but his 2019 decision to defend MIT computer science Professor Marvin Minsky was the beam which broke the camel's back. Minsky was a sometime associate of notorious pedophile and trafficker Jeffrey Epstein; Epstein survivor Virginia Giuffre stated under deposition that she had been directed to sleep with Minsky when she was 17. In the attempt to defend Minsky, RMS declared it "morally absurd" to call statutory rape "rape," and he spun an elaborate scenario regarding the likelihood that Giuffre—whom RMS had never met—would have "appeared entirely willing" to Minsky. RMS also found it important, during that … [Read more...] about Free Software Foundation and RMS issue statements on Stallman’s return

Clubhouse CEO says user data was not leaked, contrary to reports
Clubhouse CEO Paul Davison said Sunday that a report claiming personal user data had been leaked was “false.” Cyber News reported a SQL database with users’ IDs, names, usernames, Twitter and Instagram handles and follower counts were posted to an online hacker forum. According to Cyber News, it did not appear that sensitive user information such as credit card numbers were among the leaked info. Clubhouse did not immediately reply to a request for more information from The Verge on Sunday. But Davison said in response to a question during a town hall that the platform had not suffered a data breach. “No, This is misleading and false, it is a clickbait article, we were not hacked. The data referred to was all public profile information from our app. So the answer to that is a definitive ‘no.’” Last week, Cyber News reported that personal data for 500 million LinkedIn users had been scraped and posted online. 3 don’t-miss deals from Amazon’s Certified Refurbished Sale
People sometimes ask me, "Rick, do you like refurbished electronics?" My response: "No. I love refurbished electronics!" This probably explains why I get invited to few parties. I really do love refurbished gear, though, especially when it's good as new but for a much lower price. Case in point: Amazon's Certified Refurbished sale has a handful of extra-good deals, three of which I've highlighted below. Here's where the love comes in: Each product here is inspected and tested to look and work like new. And each product is backed by a full one-year warranty, same as a new one. The only real difference is the packaging: refurbs typically come in non-descript brown boxes, not fancy, colorful retail ones. To my thinking that matters only if you're shopping for a gift for someone -- and even then it's not really a huge deal. (It's what's inside that counts, right?) Here are three don't-miss deals from today's sale. Certified Refurbished Echo Show 8 $70 (save $60) … [Read more...] about 3 don’t-miss deals from Amazon’s Certified Refurbished Sale
Omm…MG! Rare Yoga Injury Breaks Man’s Leg
A man in Ireland broke his leg and spent 10 days in the hospital after injuring himself in a surprising way — while practicing yoga. The 38-year-old yoga enthusiast fractured the thighbone on his right leg while doing a difficult seated yoga pose known as Marichyasana posture B in his morning yoga class, according to a new report of the man's case, which was published online Oct. 9 in the journal BMJ Case Reports . The pose involves sitting down, with the knee bent and drawn up to the chest, and then bending the torso toward the floor. When the man got into the position, he heard a loud cracking sound and felt enormous pain in his right femur (thighbone). The pain was so excruciating that he collapsed to the ground and needed an ambulance to get to the hospital, according to the case report. In the emergency room, the man could not straighten out his right leg, and needed IV morphine to dull his pain. X-rays showed he had a "low-energy femoral shaft fracture."
