A Washington-state based aerospace company has exited stealth mode by announcing plans to develop one of the holy grails of spaceflight—a single-stage-to-orbit space plane. Radian Aerospace said it is deep into the design of an airplane-like vehicle that could take off from a runway, ignite its rocket engines, spend time in orbit, and then return to Earth and land on a runway. "We all understand how difficult this is," said Livingston Holder, Radian’s co-founder, chief technology officer, and former head of the Future Space Transportation and X-33 program at Boeing. On Wednesday, Radian announced that it had recently closed a $27.5 million round of seed funding, led by Fine Structure Ventures. To date, Radian has raised about $32 million and has 18 full-time employees at its Renton, Washington, headquarters. During an interview with Ars, Holder and Radian CEO Richard Humphrey explained that they realized it would require significantly more funding to build such an ambitious … [Read more...] about Radian announces plans to build one of the holy grails of spaceflight

Last year, a collective of cryptocurrency fans pooled millions of dollars to buy a copy of the story bible for director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s legendary never-made adaptation of the novel Dune . After winning a November auction, the group voted last week on a direction for the project and got promptly roasted online for allegedly not understanding what they’d bought. Their plans included an animated series inspired by Jodorowsky’s Dune , and as any good collector likely knows, buying a commemorative copy of a script or storyboard doesn’t give you the right to shoot your own version. The actual situation seems more ambiguous than some critics are suggesting. The Dune story bible’s owners, known as Spice DAO (short for “decentralized autonomous organization”), appear perfectly aware they don’t own Dune itself . Instead, they’re committing to an original series “inspired by” the book. The whole scheme might help illustrate why art can’t be reduced to a neat series of … [Read more...] about What exactly is the Jodorowsky’s Dune crypto collective trying to make, anyway?
You might have heard the news: Microsoft has announced plans to acquire gaming behemoth Activision Blizzard King (ABK) and its subsidiary development studios. The deal is valued at $68.7 billion—or roughly 17 acquisitions of the Star Wars franchise —and that kind of money isn't spent without an expectation of major moves (and revenue) going forward. After my colleague Kyle Orland chronicled everything we know thus far about the deal, I wanted to take a deeper look at the shape these combined companies (and their expected game launches) may take going forward. Game Pass must be fed The best sellers in the console industry continue to be holiday-adjacent releases, and Activision has a long track record of topping holiday sales charts. But Microsoft has been bullish about its Xbox brand growing not because of console sales and gifts under Christmas trees but because of the bigger profits possible when fans subscribe to Xbox services and spend money on the Xbox brand every month, … [Read more...] about What Xbox will likely do with its $68B purchase of Activision Blizzard King

Home / Reviews / Wearables The band is almost all here This connected smartwatch allows parents and their kids to stay in sync safely. Chris Wedel 19 Jan 2022 0 Source: Chris Wedel/Android Central As parents, my wife and I regularly straddle the line between giving our kids their independence while also keeping them safe. Some of the best kids smartwatches can act as helpful tools to satisfy these goals. In that vein, the T-Mobile SyncUP Kids is one of the newer devices on the block that many parents should consider. In using the smartwatch for over the last month, my 9-year-old son and I have surely put the device through its paces. There are many wearables to choose from for the youngsters in our lives, but just because it's made for a child doesn't mean it meets the requirements to be worn by one. Thankfully, the T-Mobile SyncUP Kids watch takes … [Read more...] about T-Mobile SyncUP Kids Smartwatch review: A great way to stay in sync with your kid

AMD just announced a new graphics card called the 6500 XT . This would be cause for excitement, except the new card only has 4GB of VRAM, which the company itself said wasn’t enough back in 2020. AMD announced the new graphics card and hyped up the performance, even though the card only has 4GB of VRAM. Previously, AMD had a blog post claiming that 4GB of RAM isn’t enough for modern games. However, just before releasing the new 6500 XT, AMD pulled the blog post from its website, as reported by KitGuru . The internet remembers, though, and Google’s cached version (Via The Verge ) from January 16 has the quote: “AMD is leading the industry at providing gamers with high VRAM graphics solutions across the entire product offering. Competitive products at a similar entry-level price-point are offering up to a maximum of 4GB of VRAM, which is evidently not enough for today’s games.” It’s definitely not a good look for AMD, but the new 6500 XT isn’t a terrible card, all things … [Read more...] about AMD’s New 4GB 6500 XT Doesn’t Have Enough RAM, According to AMD
The US has unveiled a new privacy bill that would ban targeted advertising on digital platforms by social media giants like Meta (formerly Facebook), Google and others. The bill allows users to sue platforms like Facebook and Google if they break the law, granting up to $5,000 in relief per violation. Titled 'The Banning Surveillance Advertising Act', the bill seeks to limit the ways that Big Tech serve ads to their users. It, however, makes some small exceptions, like allowing for "broad" location-based targeting and "contextual advertising", reports The Verge. "The 'surveillance advertising' business model is premised on the unseemly collection and hoarding of personal data to enable ad targeting," Anna Eshoo (D-CA), the bill's lead sponsor, said in a statement. "This pernicious practice allows online platforms to chase user engagement at great cost to our society, and it fuels disinformation, discrimination, voter suppression, privacy … [Read more...] about google: US unveils new privacy bill to ban targeted advertising by Meta, Google and others
