Back in early July, we reported on A.I. players managing to defeat humans in the shooter Quake III Arena by making use of tactics and objective-focused strategies rather than just killing opponents. Artificial players have now managed to prove they can compete against one of the most hardcore competitive games around, Dota 2, and they were more than up to the challenge. The artificial intelligence research company OpenAI created a team of A.I. Dota 2 players it dubbed the “OpenAI Five” to compete against current and former professional Dota 2 players ranked among the best in the world. The A.I. team drafted its players for the first game and projected that it had 95 percent change of beating its opponent. It came out of the gate strong, getting five kills in a row before the humans were able to get one, and it only got more lopsided from there. The OpenAI Five took a tower, managed to eventually wipe the entire human team before taking their base, and declared victory … [Read more...] about OpenAI bots bring the pain to professional ‘Dota 2’ players

FORTNITE players across the world have been locked out of the popular game thanks to an update released for the widely installed Norton Antivirus software. A new version of the hated bloatware elected to block Epic Games' popular title after mis-identifying one of the key files as a Trojan Horse program. It is unknown why the software, known for the frequency with which it blocks incorrect files and domains, flagged the file as a security risk. A Trojan Horse program is a computer virus that comes disguised as or hidden in an innocuous looking program. The hidden code allows an attacker to compromise your computer and either take control of it, report back about the data on it, or just capture what you're doing and pass that onto a third party. It was reported that the Fortnite file pakchunk0-windowsclient.sig was being incorrectly flagged as Trojan.Gen.NPE.2, which in turn stopped Fortnite from running after Norton kicked in to block access to the innocuous file. Those still suffering … [Read more...] about Fortnite PC players locked out of game by Norton antivirus update
ANOTHER day, another hint of a new front opening in Fortnite's march to world domination. Today it's a release from Korea, as spotted by NintendoLife, suggesting that Epic Games submitted the game on Nintendo Switch for classification ahead of a possible E3 reveal in Los Angeles next week. The listing has now gone, but evidence of it remains in the form thanks to a few screenshots taken of it from the Korean Game Rating and Administration website before it was seemingly taken down. This latest hint follows a leak partially verified by gaming blog Kotaku suggesting that Fortnite on Switch was going to have a pretty serious E3 presence. That the game is already out in some form for PS4 and Xbox One -- the co-op story mode is still technically in 'early access' and not quite finished -- as well as iOS. It's not clear if this rating for switch indicates the story mode is nearly done and ready for prime time, but it's the free-to-play multiplayer 100-player Battle Royale mode that has … [Read more...] about Fortnite rated for Nintendo Switch – is an E3 reveal on the way?

DESTINY 2 may have only just got its second expansion, but developer Bungie isn't being shy when it comes to revealing what's up next. One of the most exciting-looking features is the new Crucible Labs -- and they're going to be here in less than two weeks, on May 29. The Labs will give all Destiny 2 players "access to experimental PvP content". Anyone who decides they fancy being a guinea pig will then be able to have their opinions on how the content should evolve before the developers take it back to the drawing board and work improvements in based on direct feedback and watching how Guardians play with their new toys. The patch will also include improvements to Faction Rallies, and bring the sandbox changes that overhauled the game's best weapons to Exotic armour as well. That's far from it, though. The roadmap also reveals what looks like a couple of major U-turns ahead with "weapon randomisation" promised for September -- and bounties set to return in July. Bounties were a core … [Read more...] about Destiny 2 Crucible Labs bringing experimental matches to the sci-fi shooter
