The 1960s was a big decade for cannabis: Images of flower power, the summer of love and Woodstock wouldn’t be complete without a joint hanging from someone’s mouth. Yet in the early ’60s, scientists knew surprisingly little about the plant. When Raphael Mechoulam, then a young chemist in his 30s at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, went looking for interesting natural products to investigate, he saw an enticing gap in knowledge about the hippie weed: The chemical structure of its active ingredients hadn’t been worked out. Mechoulam set to work. The first hurdle was simply getting hold of some cannabis, given that it was illegal. “I was lucky,” Mechoulam recounts in a personal chronicle of his life’s work , published this month in the Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology . “The administrative head of my Institute knew a police officer... I just went to Police headquarters, had a cup of coffee with the policeman in charge of the storage of illicit drugs, and got 5 … [Read more...] about Scientific highs and lows of cannabinoids

House Homeland Security Chair Green: I Never Got Alerted About Spy Balloon by Biden Administration
On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Fox News @ Night,” House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) stated that he was never alerted by the Biden administration about the Chinese spy balloon. Host Trace Gallagher asked, “Are you getting any information, sir, from the Pentagon about the specifics or anything else about this balloon?” Green responded, “No. We’re getting very little and we never got a phone call. We never got alerted to this. It’s a crying shame when the Chairman of Homeland Security finds out about a Chinese spy balloon flying over the United States, it’s just — it’s really unconscionable.” Gallagher later asked, “What’s the reasoning, what’s the rationale behind not telling us more about this, giving us more information, Congressman? Did they think we wouldn’t find out about this? What’s the working theory right now about why this administration that consistently says transparency, transparency, transparency won’t give us any … [Read more...] about House Homeland Security Chair Green: I Never Got Alerted About Spy Balloon by Biden Administration
Scientists grew mini human guts inside mice
Your gut has an obvious job: It processes the food you eat. But it has another important function: It protects you from the bacteria, viruses, or allergens you ingest along with that food. “The largest part of the immune system in humans is the GI tract, and our biggest exposure to the world is what we put in our mouth,” says Michael Helmrath, a pediatric surgeon at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center who treats patients with intestinal diseases. Sometimes this system malfunctions or doesn’t develop properly, which can lead to gastrointestinal conditions like ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and celiac—all of which are on the rise worldwide. Studying these conditions in animals can only tell us so much, since their diets and immune systems are very different from ours. Nature Biotechnology that they had transplanted tiny, three-dimensional balls of human intestinal tissue into mice. After several weeks, these spheres—known as organoids—developed key features of the … [Read more...] about Scientists grew mini human guts inside mice
Remove Ubuntu or XP from the Windows 7 Boot Menu
If you’ve ever used a dual-boot system and then removed one of the operating systems, it can still show up in Windows 7’s boot menu. We’ll show you how to get rid of old entries and speed up the boot process. Note: If you’re still rocking Windows XP, you can remove items from the boot menu there too . To edit the boot menu, we will use a program called bcdedit that’s included with Windows 7. There are some third-party graphical applications that will edit the menu, but we prefer to use built-in applications when we can. First, we need to open a command prompt with Administrator privileges. Open the start menu and type cmd into the search box. Right click on the cmd program that shows up, and select Run as administrator . Alternatively, if you’ve disabled the search box , you can find the command prompt in All Programs > Accessories. In the command prompt, type in bcdedit and press enter. A list of the boot menu entries will appear. … [Read more...] about Remove Ubuntu or XP from the Windows 7 Boot Menu
Police Confirm Legitimacy of Islamic State Text Messages to Stockholm Terrorist, Once Dismissed as ‘Fake News’ by Swedish Media
Swedish police have released new information showing Stockholm terrorist Rakhmat Akilov used a private Islamic State chatroom on an encrypted messaging service to seek advice before his attack, after similar chats were dismissed as ‘fake news’ by Swedish media last year. The investigation into the attack has shown that the failed Uzbek asylum seeker had used an encrypted messaging app called Zello to openly seek advice from Islamic State operatives before the Stockholm terror attack , Expressen reports . Investigators say that Akilov wrote to one of the administrators of the Islamic State channel saying: “My master I am in Sweden, I do not have any actions, the gay parade will take place here on May 1st, if I get someone who can coordinate, I’ll do a martyring here, if God wants.” The Swedish security service (Säpo) say that they have tracked down 13 users with suspected Islamic State ties on Zello, Telegram, Whatsapp, and Facebook, who had been in direct contact with … [Read more...] about Police Confirm Legitimacy of Islamic State Text Messages to Stockholm Terrorist, Once Dismissed as ‘Fake News’ by Swedish Media

Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction
At various times in its past, the Earth has succeeded in killing off most of its inhabitants. Although the impact that killed the non-avian dinosaurs and many other species gets most of the attention, the majority of the mass extinctions we're aware of were driven by geological processes and the changes in climate that they triggered. Unfortunately, based on the current rate at which animals are vanishing for good, we're currently in the midst of another mass extinction, this one driven by a single species: humans. (And many of the extinctions occurred before we started getting serious about messing with the climate.) This week's edition of Science contains a series of articles tracking the pace of the extinction and examining our initial efforts to contain it. Extinction and “defaunation” Estimating the total number of animal species is a challenging task, but numbers range from roughly five to 10 million. Of those, we seem to be exterminating about 10,000 to 60,000 every … [Read more...] about Tracking and combatting our current mass extinction
