iOS 8 Review: Widgets, Keyboards and Notifications Make a Good OS Great

· September 17, 2014 ·

iOS 8 is Apple's most realized iOS release ever. Sure, the media excitement is concentrated around the impending release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus , but iOS 8 is something that should enthuse all iPhone and iPad owners. See also: What You Should Do Before Downloading iOS 8 When I reviewed iOS 7 last year, I described the release as a rebirth of iOS . It was, after all, a significant overhaul — akin to the change from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. For those who remember, Mac OS X 10.0 was a rough release. Sure, the interface was brand new and the promise was there, but there were bugs and some missing features. It was with the release of Mac OS X 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.2 that the platform really started to take off, both with developers and with users. The same is true for iOS 8. On the outside, it looks almost identical to iOS 7, but once under the hood, you realize there's something more powerful and useful at your fingertips. Look and feel Visually, iOS 8 … [Read more...] about iOS 8 Review: Widgets, Keyboards and Notifications Make a Good OS Great

Apple iPad Air Raises the Tablet Bar

· October 30, 2013 ·

Holding the Apple iPad Air Apple's iPad Air takes the tablets design to a new level of portability. At just one pound and 0.29 inch thick, the tablet is light enough to hold with just your fingertips. iPad Air Box The only notable thing about the iPad Air box is that it's smaller than any full-size iPad box that's come before it. iPad Air side view As you can see, the lock switch and volume buttons are still on the side. iPad Air Back Aside from the "space gray" aluminum, there's nothing remarkable about the back of the iPad Air. You can see the iSight camera in the upper left corner. iPad Air's iSight Camera This is pretty much the same camera you'll find on the previous iPad and on the iPhone 5C. iPad Air Top Edge The top edge features the 3.5mm audio jack, microphone opening and the power/sleep button. iPad Air Speakers and Lighting Port Another look at that very thin edge. iPad Air Bottom Edge … [Read more...] about Apple iPad Air Raises the Tablet Bar

Apple Pay: The Real-World Test

· October 21, 2014 ·

It's finally here: Apple Pay arrived on Monday as part of iOS 8.1 , which turns the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus into mobile payment machines. Just install the update, add a credit card to Passbook, and you're good to start buying stuff with your iPhone. See also: How to Use Apple Pay: What You Need to Know At least that's the theory, but is it really that convenient? We decided to check out how Apple Pay works in the real world by adding cards from various banks and using it at a few retailers and services in New York City. The result: it's definitely more convenient than a credit card, but there's room for improvement. Getting started After downloading iOS 8.1 and launching Passbook , the option to enter a credit or debit card shows up prominently. Tap it, and you'll immediately be asked whether you want to connect the credit card associated with your Apple ID or enter a new one. However, once I connected a scanned card to Apple Pay, the option to add one from my … [Read more...] about Apple Pay: The Real-World Test

This iPhone and Samsung Galaxy camera comparison was not what I expected

· February 28, 2021 ·

The $829 (£799, AU$1,349) iPhone 12 has two rear cameras and Samsung's $800 (£769, AU$1,249) Galaxy S21 has three rear cameras. Are more cameras better? Or does a higher price mean better photos? To find out, I did a good old-fashioned camera shootout. The results surprised me. There aren't many people deciding between an iPhone 12 and Galaxy S21 based solely on their cameras. Maybe there is a small niche of professional photographers, like me, who'd use cameras to decide between a Galaxy S21 Ultra or an iPhone 12 Pro Max. But most people stick to what they know and if someone switches from iOS to Android or the other way around, cameras won't be the only deciding factor. Cut through the chatter Subscribe to CNET's Mobile newsletter for the latest phone news and reviews. With that acknowledgement of reality out of the way, let's take a look at these cameras. Despite a similar price, the Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12 represent two different approaches to phone … [Read more...] about This iPhone and Samsung Galaxy camera comparison was not what I expected
