The world’s largest technology companies have snapped up smaller rivals at a record pace this year in a buying spree that comes as US politicians and regulators prepare to crack down on “under the radar” deals. Data from Refinitiv analyzed by the Financial Times show that tech companies have spent at least $264 billion buying up potential rivals worth less than $1 billion since the start of 2021—double the previous record registered in 2000 during the dotcom boom. The glut of acquisitions comes amid much tougher scrutiny from the White House, regulators and members of Congress, who have accused large technology companies—particularly Apple, Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft—of stifling competition and harming consumers. The Federal Trade Commission is investigating Facebook’s long-completed acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, and the organization has warned that it could scrutinize other transactions even after they have gone through. It has the power to unwind deals if … [Read more...] about Big tech companies snap up smaller rivals at record pace

Former President Donald Trump is more popular with registered voters than President Joe Biden, according to a Monday Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released by the Hill. “Forty-eight percent of respondents say they have a positive view of Trump compared to 46 percent who say they have a favorable opinion of his successor,” the Hill reported . In addition to respondents’ more positive view of Trump than Biden, 51 percent believe Trump was actually “a better president than Biden.” During Trump’s tenure, the United States succeeded at hammering out trade deals, constructing historic Middle East peace agreements, and raising wages for many varying demographics. In contrast, Biden’s presidency has been defined by the deadly Afghan evacuation that left hundreds to thousands of U.S. documented residents stranded behind enemy lines and droned Afghan civilians. iPhone 13 wasn't the biggest star of Apple's California Streaming event Watch Now After offering tributes to the Golden State and promising its streaming subscribers a golden slate, Apple turned the attention of its California Streaming event to what have been its least glamorous iPads: the baseline model and the iPad mini . The specs for both have long lagged behind the company's stages for advancing the tablet, In its divergent upgrades for each, though, Apple set a new roadmap for the products by resolving a longstanding conflict in their related histories. Also: Why the iPad Mini 6 is Apple's most exciting new product in years First came the iPad. With its classic Home button planted in the center of a bezel expanse just above the glacially fading Lightning connector, the baseline iPad's design remains the last to bear the design DNA that defined the modern tablet. To be sure, the way Apple talks about the iPad has evolved 180 degrees in the … [Read more...] about Apple’s iPad mini solution: Just add Air
Further Reading Surface Pro 2: Less than a laptop I've never actually considered buying one of Microsoft's Surface tablets. It's not because they're bad machines or because of some specific distaste for Windows or something—it's just that I spend most of my time on my computers writing, and when I'm writing on a laptop, I'm almost always using the device on my lap. The Surface Touch and Type covers have their virtues, but they absolutely need a stable desk or table to be used. When combined with the Surface tablet, the system is shaky on your lap at best. Microsoft made light of this foible at the Surface Pro 3 announcement today , taking care to highlight how many of the assembled press and analysts were using MacBook Airs to do their liveblogs and take their notes. I was one of those people, so a substantial portion of the announcement was aimed specifically at me (and my kind). Here's a Surface tablet you can use on your lap, as you would a laptop. Challenge accepted, … [Read more...] about Hands-on: Using Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 as a laptop—on my lap
Red squirrel moms know how to give their offspring an early edge in a crowded forest. New research shows the animals can speed up the growth rates of their pups to help ensure they'll be able to compete for turf when populations are dense. Surprisingly, stress, not more food, is the key to the mother's gift, scientists say. Bigger squirrels have a better chance of staking out an exclusive territory, where they can freely feast on the seeds hidden in spruce-tree cones. Juveniles that don't manage to acquire a territory before their first winter often do not survive. [ See Cute Pictures of Red Squirrel Pups ] "When population density is high, only the fastest-growing offspring survive," said study researcher Andrew McAdam, of the University of Guelph in Canada. McAdam and colleagues studied North American red squirrels living in the Yukon. In field experiments, they played recordings of territorial squirrel vocalizations (known as "rattles") to trick the moms … [Read more...] about How Red Squirrels Are Like Tiger Moms

The House Budget committee will not mark up Biden’s $3.5 trillion proposal this week, according Punchbowl News, which means it will not be ready in time for to pass the House in unison with the president’s bipartisan infrastructure package. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised Democrat moderates she would hold a vote on the bipartisan package by September 27, even as the more leftist wing of the party has threatened to withhold their votes for that package without the $3.5 trillion package passing at the same time.
