Crypto-anarchists may not like it, but money doesn’t buy everything. Sometimes, you just need the help of a traditional venture capitalist. Binance is the fastest growing company in crypto — having risen to become the world’s largest crypto exchange based on trading volumes in under one year — but even it needs help from the old guard. Earlier today the exchange firm, which is officially headquartered in Malta, announced that it has landed an undisclosed investment from Vertex Ventures, a VC firm belonging to Singapore sovereign fund Temasek. The deal is aimed at launching Binance’s fiat-to-crypto exchange in Singapore which is in beta right now but expected to launch fully, with regulatory compliance, before the end of this year. VCs have long invested in crypto and crypto exchanges — $8 billion-valued Coinbase is the best example with phenomenal gains for backers — but Binance is not traditional. It is barely one year old, it operates … [Read more...] about Even the world’s largest crypto exchange needs help from traditional VCs

Microsoft Reveals Xbox Series X
Microsoft just gave us a first glimpse of what the next Xbox console will look like, what it's called, and what it will be capable of. Say hello to the Xbox Series X. Writing on Xbox Wire, Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, revealed the new console in a teaser video showing a quite different design akin to a mini tower PC case. You'll be happy to hear it can be placed in a horizontal orientation, though, allowing it to slide on to a shelf below your TV. As you'd expect for a next-gen games console, Spencer is claiming the Xbox Series X "will be our fastest, most powerful console ever and set a new bar for performance, speed and compatibility." Clearly the backwards compatibility brought to Xbox One is being retained as it proved so popular, with Microsoft promising support for three generations of games. And while the design of the console is different, it doesn't look to be without reason. Microsoft claims four-times the processing power of an Xbox One "in the most quiet and efficient way." … [Read more...] about Microsoft Reveals Xbox Series X

The Xbox One Series X: bad name, good design
Microsoft dropped a surprise last night — we got our first look at the upcoming Xbox and learned its name: Microsoft’s next Xbox is Xbox Series X, coming holiday 2020. I’m not sold on the name, but I think I am sold on the shape: instead of a VCR-like traditional console, it’s a square tower. You can use the new Xbox Series X horizontally, thankfully, so there is a better chance you’ll be able to fit it inside whatever home entertainment console you have. I like this shape because it has more class than the last few Xboxes. The original Xbox One was a design disaster, and the subsequent iterations got better but still felt off. This design feels more honest to what it really is. It looks like a PC, basically. I hate the name. “Series X” is meant to denote that there will be more than one (Microsoft isn’t saying so, but my colleague Tom Warren knows another is coming). Just, I dunno, when Microsoft made the call not to go with a simple … [Read more...] about The Xbox One Series X: bad name, good design
