In 2012, North Carolina legislators passed a bill that barred policymakers and developers from using up-to-date climate science to plan for rising sea levels on the state’s coast. Now Hurricane Florence threatens to cause a devastating storm surge that could put thousands of lives in danger and cost the state billions of dollars worth of damage. The hurricane, which is expected to make landfall on Friday, is shaping up to be one of the worst storms to hit the East Coast. Residents of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and mainland coasts have already been ordered to evacuate. President Donald Trumpdeclared a state of emergency in both North and South Carolina, and a Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator said that the Category 4 hurricane will likely cause “massive damage to our country.”And the rise in sea levels, experts say, is making the storm surge worse. 23 PHOTOS Hurricane Florence churns toward East Coast See Gallery Hurricane Florence … [Read more...] about 6 years ago, North Carolina chose to ignore rising sea levels. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has endorsed an article calling for the Republican party to be wiped out in the U.S. for at least a couple of generations and replaced by a de facto one-party state controlled by well-meaning Democrats. According to the article’s author – another liberal tech CEO called Peter Leyden – the Republican party is now so morally indefensible on every level that it is equivalent to the Confederacy in the Civil War, which had to be defeated because it was on the “wrong side of history.”Leyden writes: Let’s just say what needs to be said: The Republican Party over the past 40 years has maneuvered itself into a position where they are the bad guys on the wrong side of history. For a long time, they have been able to hide this fact through a sophisticated series of veils, invoking cultural voodoo that fools a large enough number of Americans to stay in the game. However, Donald Trump has laid waste to that sophistication and has given … [Read more...] about Delingpole: Twitter CEO Praises Article Calling For New ‘Civil War’ in Which Republicans Are Destroyed
Climate change is going to cost the US billions of dollars because of extreme weather, health problems, and more — and New York City wants fossil fuel companies to help pay for it. So the city is suing BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, and Royal Dutch Shell, the Associated Press reports. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the lawsuit today, pointing to dangers New Yorkers could face as climate change continues — like rising sea levels, hotter temperatures, more severe rain and snowfall, and increased flooding. “Sandy taught us how destructive weather events exacerbated by climate change can be,” a statement from the mayor’s office says. The mayor also announced plans to rid the city’s $189 billion pension funds of fossil fuel investments. To prepare for a warmer world, New York City is already shoring up coastal, water, and sewer infrastructure and developing programs to keep the public healthy. But the price tag for this effort is around $20 … [Read more...] about NYC tells Big Oil it’s time to pay up for climate change
For decades, the oil and gas company Exxon Mobil has waged a public-facing disinformation campaign about human-caused climate change — even as the company’s scientific publications and internal communications acknowledged its reality, a new study says. Harvard science historian Naomi Oreskes and postdoctoral fellow Geoffrey Supran analyzed internal, scientific, and public-facing communications from Exxon Mobil. They found the vast majority of the company’s peer-reviewed papers and internal documents confirmed that climate change is real and caused by human activity. But Exxon’s communications with the public through paid editorials, or ‘advertorials’, in the New York Times promoted climate skepticism. This study is the latest in a series of probes investigating whether the oil and gas giant has misled the public and its shareholders about fossil fuel emissions and the reality of climate change. Investigative journalists at Inside Climate News and … [Read more...] about Inside an investigation into Exxon Mobil’s climate change misinformation
