Worker safety at Tesla’s flagship auto plant have been called into question again — this time in a report that analyzes three years of federal records — as the US automaker tries to fend off attempts at unionization and undergoes a rapid expansion to produce the Model 3, an electric vehicle for the masses. Worksafe, a worker safety advocacy group found injury rates at the plant were well above the industry average in 2014 and 2015, according to its independent review of work-related injuries and illnesses at Tesla’s Fremont, California plant. Worksafe, which analyzed reports filed with the US Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, found similarly high injury rates in 2016 at the plant, but is unable to offer an accurate comparison because official industry-wide statistics are not yet available for that year. The Worksafe report not only outlines an array of worrisome data of Tesla’s past, it also questions whether the company’s recent claims of improved … [Read more...] about Injury rates at Tesla’s auto factory were 31 percent higher than the industry average, report finds

A legal challenge over crypto reporting could strike down decades-old anti-money laundering laws
Ever since the Silk Road, Bitcoin’s power to fuel anonymous transactions (and, more specifically, money laundering) has been a prime concern for lawmakers and law enforcement agencies. A new provision passed as part of the infrastructure package tried to tackle that issue, but it’s running into stiff opposition from cryptocurrency groups — and a legal challenge that could have huge implications for financial transparency across the country. In November 2021, when President Biden’s trillion-dollar Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act was signed into law, a controversial cryptocurrency-related provision was passed along with the major legislation on roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. The bipartisan infrastructure bill included an amendment to the tax code that required any business or individual receiving a cryptocurrency transaction of more than $10,000 to report it to the IRS, using a specific form that includes the sender’s name, date of birth, and taxpayer … [Read more...] about A legal challenge over crypto reporting could strike down decades-old anti-money laundering laws
How CRISPR rice could help tackle climate change
Can gene-editing technology CRISPR create new crops that help fight climate change as they grow? That’s what a group of researchers hopes to do with $11 million in funding from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The funding will go toward efforts to enhance plants — starting with rice — and soil so that they’re better at trapping carbon dioxide. The effort, which was announced last week , is being led by the Innovative Genomics Institute, which was founded by Nobel laureate and co-inventor of CRISPR Jennifer Doudna. “[Jennifer] and I saw eye to eye on climate and how big of a problem it is in the world. And we just didn’t want to sit on the sidelines anymore,” says Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) executive director Brad Ringeisen. Climate experts overwhelmingly agree that the only way to truly tackle climate change is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions we’re sending into the air as we burn fossil fuels to generate electricity or power trains, planes, and cars. … [Read more...] about How CRISPR rice could help tackle climate change

Father begs Apple CEO to help unlock his dead 13-year-old son’s iPhone
An Italian father has reportedly written to Apple CEO Tim Cook, pleading for help to unlock his dead 13-year-old son’s iPhone 6 so that he can retrieve the photos stored on it. "I cannot give up. Having lost my [son] Dama, I will fight to have the last two months of photos, thoughts and words which are held hostage in his phone," Leonardo Fabbretti wrote in the March 21 letter, which was quoted Wednesday by Agence France Presse . "I think what’s happened should make you think about the privacy policy adopted by your company. Although I share your philosophy in general, I think Apple should offer solutions for exceptional cases like mine," he said. Since iOS 8, Apple has said that it has engineered its phones such that the company cannot access data held on a phone without the passcode. Apple recently refused to help the FBI disable the 10-passcode limit on the iPhone 5C that was used by San Bernardino terrorist Syed Rizwan Farook. The incident is one of many that highlight the … [Read more...] about Father begs Apple CEO to help unlock his dead 13-year-old son’s iPhone

FedEx will close all data centers and transition to the cloud within two years
What just happened? FedEx is going all in on cloud computing, a move that will save the Memphis, Tennessee-based transportation company an estimated $400 million annually. During FedEx's recent investor day, CIO Robert Carter said they've been working across this decade to streamline and simplify their technology and systems by moving to the cloud and eliminating monolithic applications. "We're moving to a zero data center, zero mainframe environment that's more flexible, secure, and cost-effective," Carter said . The executive added that FedEx plans to close its last remaining data centers, eliminate the final 20 percent of its mainframe footprint and move its remaining applications to cloud-native structures within the next two years. Oracle and Microsoft, which FedEx already relies on for its existing cloud operations, would no doubt welcome additional business with open arms. What we don't know at this time is exactly how many facilities and jobs will be impacted … [Read more...] about FedEx will close all data centers and transition to the cloud within two years

5G Spectrum Auction: Telcos’ 5G bids seen muted as private firms jostle for airwaves: Report
NEW DELHI: Telecom giants are likely to make muted bids at the 5G spectrum auction in July, on worries they stand to lose about 40% in potential revenues due to the allotment of some airwaves to enterprises for private networks, industry sources said. Top player Reliance Industries' Jio and rivals Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have failed to lobby New Delhi to stop the allocation that will let various enterprises, including Amazon.com and Tata Consultancy Services, to get airwaves without auction. "The telecom companies are quite upset, there will be an estimated 40% potential 5G revenue loss," said S.P. Kochhar, director general of Cellular Operators Association of India, which represents the three telcos. They were counting on demand from the enterprise side to justify investments worth billions of dollars as uptake by price-conscious retail consumers will be slow, Kochhar added. "That is a major disappointment." The rise of private 5G networks dims the … [Read more...] about 5G Spectrum Auction: Telcos’ 5G bids seen muted as private firms jostle for airwaves: Report
