A labour court in Kenya ruled that Meta , the parent company of Facebook , can be sued in the East African country after a former content moderator filed a lawsuit against it alleging poor working conditions. The lawsuit was filed by one person on behalf of a group and was also filed against Meta's local outsourcing company Sama. It seeks financial compensation, an order that outsourced moderators have the same healthcare and pay scale as Meta employees, that unionisation rights be protected and an independent human rights audit of the office. The decision from Kenya's employment and labour relations court could have implications for how Meta works with content moderators globally. The US company works with thousands of moderators around the world, tasked with reviewing graphic content posted on its platform. icra: Indian IT services industry’s growth pace may slow down in near to mid term: ICRA
The growth momentum of Indian IT services industry is likely to slow down in the near to mid term as macroeconomic headwinds trigger lower discretionary IT spends, ICRA said. Ratings agency ICRA sees lower hiring by the IT service companies in the near term given that excess capacities were added in FY2022 and expects moderation in demand compared to previous fiscals amid macroeconomic headwinds. Indian IT services companies have witnessed a moderation in growth in the last two quarters in constant currency terms owing to the base effect and evolving macroeconomic headwinds in key markets of the US and Europe . Due to these headwinds, the decision-making towards discretionary IT spending has seen a slight deferment, while the cost optimisation deals continue to generate stable demand, it noted. icra: Telcos to shell out around Rs. 1.0-1.1 lakh crore on 5G auctions: ICRA
Ratings firm ICRA expects telcos to shell out around Rs. 1.0-1.1 lakh crore on the upcoming 5G auctions . Given the relaxed payment terms however, the upfront outgo is likely to be around Rs. 10,000 crore for the industry. Additionally, the firm said the industry needs to shell out Rs. 17,000 crore annually towards spectrum instalments, till the moratorium ends. While payments rules have been relaxed for the upcoming auctions, ICRA believes that participation in the auction will add to the industry’s overall debt since it will add to the deferred spectrum liabilities. ICRA expects industry debt levels to increase to around Rs. 5.7 lakh crore as on March 31, 2023, before moderating to Rs. 5.3 lakh crore as on March 31, 2025, despite fundraising attempts by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea . The addition of deferred liabilities is expected to keep the debt levels elevated. ICRA expects the debt metrics to improve steadily going forward given its … [Read more...] about icra: Telcos to shell out around Rs. 1.0-1.1 lakh crore on 5G auctions: ICRA
meta: US senators question Meta on Chinese, other developers’ access to sensitive data
Senators Mark Warner and Marco Rubio, chair and vice chair of the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence , wrote to Facebook parent Meta Platforms about documents that show it knew developers in China and Russia had access to user data that could be used for espionage. "It appears from these documents that Facebook has known, since at least September 2018, that hundreds of thousands of developers in countries Facebook characterized as 'high-risk,' including the People's Republic of China, had access to significant amounts of sensitive user data," Warner , a Democrat, and Republican Rubio wrote in the letter to company founder Mark Zuckerberg . Google will soon default to blurring explicit image search results
Google has debuted a new default SafeSearch setting, somewhere between "on" and "off," that automatically blurs explicit images in search results for most people. In a blog post timed to Safer Internet Day , Google outlined a number of measures it plans to implement to "protect democracies worldwide," secure high-risk individuals, improve password management, and protect credit card numbers. Tucked into a series of small-to-medium announcements is a notable change to search results, Google's second core product after advertising. A new setting, rolling out "in the coming months," "will blur explicit imagery if it appears in Search results when SafeSearch filtering isn't turned on," writes Google's Jen Fitzpatrick, senior vice president of Core Systems & Experiences. "This setting will be the new default for people who don't already have the SafeSearch filter turned on, with the option to adjust settings at any time." Google's explanatory image (seen above) shows someone … [Read more...] about Google will soon default to blurring explicit image search results
ABC’s Griffin: Biden Can’t Even Beat Trump’s ‘Low Bar’ Numbers
Tuesday on ABC’s “The View,” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre why President Joe Biden’s polls results were worse than former President Donald Trump’s numbers. Co-host Sara Haines asked, “Now, if the economy is strong, why don’t more Americans feel that way?” Jean-Pierre said, “What the president has done is transform the way we think about it, right? We used to talk about the trickle-down economy. He doesn’t say that. He doesn’t believe in that. He believes in building an economy from the bottom up, middle out.” She added, “Polls go up. Polls go down. We all know this. I know you all talk about this very often, so we know that’s a reality.” Griffin said, “Biden’s State of the Union Address is expected to double as a soft launch for his 2024 campaign, but a new ABC News poll says voters are even less enthused about Biden running again than Trump, a low bar. How do you respond to that fact that a whopping 58 percent of Democrats … [Read more...] about ABC’s Griffin: Biden Can’t Even Beat Trump’s ‘Low Bar’ Numbers
Concerns Swirl as Polls Show Democrats Want Someone Other than Biden in 2024: It’s ‘Worrisome’
Concerns and speculation are rising as recent surveys — including a recent Washington Post /ABC News poll — show former President Donald Trump leading President Joe Biden in a 2024 presidential matchup as Democrats express the desire to see someone else as their nominee, prompting some to say it is “worrisome” for the Democrats. There will be no crypto ads for this year’s Super Bowl after the FTX crash
In context: Crypto industry insiders were all abuzz last year when several crypto-related ads appeared during Super Bowl LVI. In 2022, crypto firms made bold pitches and spent millions of dollars on ads encouraging viewers to invest in digital assets. But just one year later, the crypto industry has been rocked by a major slump in digital asset values. One of the highest profile crypto companies went bankrupt, and others are struggling to stay afloat. Coinbase, the only publicly traded company in the group, has seen its shares fall by more than 60% since its now-infamous "floating QR code" ad campaign. Fox Sports said Monday that it would not allow cryptocurrency commercials during this year's Super Bowl on February 12, following the collapse of crypto exchange FTX. Many firms in the cryptocurrency industry, including Coinbase, Crypto.com, and FTX, advertised their companies during the sports event last year. "There's zero representation in that category on the day at all," said … [Read more...] about There will be no crypto ads for this year’s Super Bowl after the FTX crash
*** SOTU Livewire *** Joe Biden Gives Second State of the Union Address
Democrat President Joe Biden is set to give his second State of the Union address as Commander in Chief of the United States on Tuesday evening before a joint session of Congress. The speech, set to begin at 9 p.m. ET, is Biden’s third address to a joint session of Congress, having given a first one in 2021, then his first State of the Union address in 2022. Now, he gives his second such address–an annual tradition for presidents speaking in the U.S. House chamber before Senators, House members, members of the Cabinet, and members of the U.S. Supreme Court. Biden’s address comes at a particularly fraught time for his presidency, just days after a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) spy balloon floated across the continental United States before the president ordered it shot down when it had moved off the South Carolina coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It also comes as Biden faces a special counsel investigation over his mishandling of classified documents from his time as Vice President … [Read more...] about *** SOTU Livewire *** Joe Biden Gives Second State of the Union Address
