The crackdown is the latest front in President Xi Jinping’s campaign to expand the government’s suppression of internet activity beyond China’s borders. In effect, the authorities are extending their control … [Read more...] about Twitter Users in China Face Detention and Threats in New Beijing Crackdown

Trump, provided almost no financial help. “I built what I built myself,” the president has repeatedly said. But an investigation by The New York Times has revealed that Donald Trump received the equivalent today of at least $413 million from his father’s real estate empire. The Young and the Reckless
I. The Bumper The trip to Delaware was only supposed to last a day. David Pokora, a bespectacled University of Toronto senior with scraggly blond hair down to his shoulders, needed to travel south to fetch a bumper that he’d bought for his souped-up Volkswagen Golf R. The American seller had balked at shipping to Canada, so Pokora arranged to have the part sent to a buddy, Justin May, who lived in Wilmington. The young men, both ardent gamers, shared a fascination with the inner workings of the Xbox; though they’d been chatting and collaborating for years, they’d never met in person. Pokora planned to make the eight-hour drive on a Friday, grab a leisurely dinner with May, then haul the metallic-blue bumper back home to Mississauga, Ontario, that night or early the next morning. His father offered to tag along so they could take turns behind the wheel of the family’s Jetta. An hour into their journey on March 28, 2014, the Pokoras crossed the … [Read more...] about The Young and the Reckless

Growing up in apartheid South Africa, the son of Chinese immigrants, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong got his information and entertainment from daily newspapers. Television was banned in that country until he was 23.When he started saving money for college, he turned to newspapers again, plucking hundreds of copies warm off the presses of the Port Elizabeth Evening Post and scampering around the city to sell them. And now, at age 65, after amassing a multibillion-dollar fortune as a physician and biotech entrepreneur, he’s gone all in with newspapers, buying The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and a string of community publications in Southern California for an eyebrow-raising $500 million. The deal is expected to close this month.“It’s in my blood,” Soon-Shiong said in a recent interview at the Culver City headquarters of NantWorks, the umbrella organization for a group of health-care and diagnostic companies he founded that are trying, in his … [Read more...] about Physician turned entrepreneur begins work with new patients: Union-Tribune and L.A.
