Cybersecurity researchers have discovered unencrypted data of about a million users of Quickfox, a free virtual private network ( VPN ) service primarily used to access Chinese sites from outside of mainland China. Commenting on the find, WizCase says that the data exposed a variety of personally identifiable information (PII) of the users of the service, including their names, phone numbers, and more. “There was no need for a password or login credentials to see this information, and the data was not encrypted. Microsoft's workforce has grown significantly since 2017, according to a new report from the company tracking the size and makeup of its employee base. Microsoft has more than 180,000 employees in more than 100 countries, representing an increase of 46.5% since 2017. The numbers only cover Microsoft's core workforce and do not include the employees of LinkedIn and GitHub. Women make up 29.7% of Microsoft's current workforce and the company's racial make up is 48.5% white and 34.9% Asian. Microsoft said the Hispanic and Latinx population grew 0.5% to 7% of the global workforce while the Black workforce is now at 5.7%, an increase of 0.9%. The Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander employee population ranged between .7% and .2% in different sections of the report. A new survey of 300 US-based IT decision-makers found that 64% have been victims of a ransomware attack in the last 12 months, and 83% of those attack victims paid the ransom demand. Cybersecurity company ThycoticCentrify released its "2021 State of Ransomware Survey & Report" on Tuesday, featuring the insights of IT leaders who have dealt with ransomware attacks over the last year. Of those surveyed, 72% have seen cybersecurity budgets increase due to ransomware threats, and 93% are allocating special budgets to fight ransomware threats. Half of the respondents said they experienced a loss of revenue and reputational damage from a ransomware attack, while 42% indicated they had lost customers as a result of an attack. More than 30% said they were forced to lay off employees as well. Stripe on Wednesday announced its plans to acquire Recko , a financial operations platform based in Bangalore, India. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Recko's payments reconciliation software will add to the growing list of tools Stripe is providing for internet businesses, continuing Stripe's expansion beyond payments acceptance. Recko helps automate parts of payments reconciliation -- an accounting process that compares two or more sets of records, such as a company's internal sales log and their external bank statement. A retailer, for instance, would want to reconcile a $100 purchase on their website with a $100 payment reported by their payment processor and the $99 deposit (less a $1 processing fee) received in the bank.
